  1. US Time on U.S. Scientists Call for a Time Change · · Score: 1

To be honest, we have US currency... why not US time? We can easily calculate US time using current systems, and then we don't have to worry about all their other peculiarities. They can bomb terrorists and take over the world in their own time, and we can cope with it because, just like we have to transfer US dollars to a useful currency, we can transfer US time to a meaningful worldwide time. What's the problem?

The tinker factor, mentioned in one of the switchers' comments, is exactly the reason why I gave Linux a go and quickly gave up. What's more, I've recently managed to convert my partner to Macintosh from Linux. What impressed him? Exactly the same thing - days trying to get Bluetooth to do something vaguely useful.

Maybe it's more of an indication of our ineptness when it comes to all things Unixy, but then again we're more computer literate than the majority of folks. Granny just isn't in a position to switch to Linux, whereas she has a fighting chance with MacOS or even Windows.

Isn't the whole point that Microsoft wants to be bigger than anyone, doing anything at all? You can hula-hoop - Microsoft can do it better. You can produce desktop software that runs on Microsoft's own platform... er... well, Microsoft can do it better. They just didn't, to start with. They're trying harder now.

What is it with Microsoft? Even people who adore Microsoft's products hate the company. Even Steve, bless his heart, manages to make them all look like pillocks while he prances about the stage proclaiming his intense love for everything microsoft.

Anything which makes them take their head out of their arse and look around for a moment has to be good. At present, just about every aspect of the real world has this property.

I must agree with this. When I end a sentence with a preposition it's on purpose. When I accidentally typo an it's when I mean its, it's a mistake. I'd like those spotted. I would, however, prefer not to be bothered with a mystifying page of information on why 'that which I expected' should be something completely different, given that a line earlier the program failed to notice an egregious error about which I really should be notified.

  13. Garageband on An Experiment in A New Kind of Music · · Score: 1

Although many comments seem to feel it's pointless and sounds like ancient console music, some of the compositions are quite interesting, particularly from a minimalist point of view. It'd be nice to export the loops straight to Garageband and use them as a basis for further experimentation.

Perhaps Apple would consider licensing the algorithm to install as part of Garageband by default. Garageband seems almost ideal for this kind of 'toy' - it's hardly of interest to professional musicians, but for the amateur dabblers with Garageband it's great fun...

  22. Parallels on Attack of the $1 DVDs · · Score: 0

There is a parallel here to long-lost novels and suchlike, mentioned by Anne Rice in Memnoch The Devil. Anne goes to some lengths to mention an old lady, jaded yet happy, who purchases a novel from a drugstore, full of remembered happiness at reading it earlier.

The same is surely true of DVDs. Despite the romantic connotations, who wouldn't spend a couple of quid on a quick nostalgia fix? It's worth it, even if the film itself is rubbish. What's more, if a film is fondly remembered, two quid is hardly a fortune to spend on a little reacquaintance.

It's certainly got more to do with that than Apple being desperate to scam the entire universe out of their supreme right to poke around at delicate hardware.

I really don't think it's feasible to imagine an iPod running off replacable batteries like you suggest; a 1 gig Creative device and a 60 gig iPod are completely different beasts...
