Excellent idea! If only there was available competition in my city to go to. Comcast is the only game in town. AT&T is here, but doesnt offer any fiber or DSL. Their system provides speeds of 768K.
You are partially right. Gore did not actually say that he invented the internet, but he also was not quite so instrumental in its creation as you and he would have us believe.
Before the flaming starts, I am not saying that TRO's for abuse should not be issued, just that the procedures which allow the truly abused quick relief also allow the unscrupulous to use them to harrass others.
If someone wants to kick your arse, I dont think a piece of paper from some old white guy is going to stop them... $0.02
I purchased the new Toshiba M200 in December and I have been extremely pleased with it. I am also in class and I have had no problems with speed or crashes at all; 60GB drive, 512MB of RAM, 12inch screen and the best Video card/resolution of any Tablets currently on the market. Your best bet will be to check out TabletPCBuzz.com and do some research. It is quiet so it does not interrupt class, and the M200 comes with Microsoft Office OneNote which is IMHO the best note taking program out there.
No, but I can lend my car to a friend. And if I get a new muffler I don't have to go take my driving test again
True. But if you do lend your car to your friend you cannot use it at the same time. Typically EULA's tend to limit the use of any software to a single computer at a time. Nowadays, they are more invasive, but that is only the software companies trying to push the limit to see how far we will bend over and take it.
As for getting a new muffler, you can rebuild a computer and put in about 75% new components and Windows XP wont even ask you to re-register. And the Windows Re-Registration hot-line is very easy, and I have never had a problem with them.
I am currently a third year Computer Science major at a small southern university. I would ultimately like to complete my CS degree, attend law school, and help with the battle you are fighting (eg become an attorney for the EFF). What suggestions would you have for people like me?
You are assuming that no one is buying. If no one is buying then yes, their loss goes up. But as I explained, if more and more people buy, the loss still goes up. According to this article, Microsoft is seeing growth in XBox sales. No where near the growth that Sony is seeing, but growth nonetheless.
I find these prospects very alarming, and thus the news of the Xbox's impending failure can't help but be a little bit of a relief.
Who said anything about impending failure? It has been speculated widely that Microsoft is taking at least $100 loss on each XBox, aiming for market penetration, so they can earn the money on game purchases. Even losing 300 million in this particular segment, Microsoft made nearly 3 Billion in profit from Office and Windows. Microsoft is in this for the long run, they are not going to shutdown XBox just because of a growth in operating loss. As a previous poster said, the only thing this points to is an increase in sales. If you are losing $100 per item, and you sell 100 items then you have a loss of $100,000. If you are losing $100 per item and you sell 1,000,000 then you have a loss of $100,000,000. I realize that is overly simplistic, but the point is that I think Microsoft probably views this increase in operating loss as a good thing.

Damn! I thought we won the war! Do you mean that it has been a lie the whole time and we are actually still part of the Empire? Now I feel bad for all those jokes about Blair.
Great sig. You just/.'ed some poor bastards fan site. Now he is going to be greeted soon by a nasty email from Yahoo!/Geocities that he has surpassed his monthly bandwidth usage for the next 10,000 years.:)
You are comparing apples to oranges. You are arguing that to an individual, cheap/available hardware is not a deciding factor for new cars. You are probably right. Just because a Hyandai is cheap and available, most individuals will not purchase it, they go for style. Corporations on the other hand go for cheap & available. Corporations are all about profit. Show me some US corporations that have fleets of BMW or Mercedes. Corporations will purchase Hyundais because they are cheap and available. In the same vein, Individuals may purchase MacOS because it is "better." Corporations will purchase Windows because it is cheaper. Windows runs on their existing hardware, Windows works with their existing systems. MacOS does not. MacOS requires new hardware, new third-party software (usually), retraining. Once a company is converted to Mac's, is the TCO actually any lower than that of Windows?
We have seen plenty of graphs and studies saying that the TCO of Linux is better than that of Windows, but in order for Linux to truly take over the desktop, and for Microsoft to truly begin to lose its minority position, businesses must begin to accept alternative OSes. I do not have any figures to back this up, but I am willing to stake my reputation on the fact that Microsoft could become a solely B2B vendor and still maintain a Monopoly position in the market.
Under the GPL they only have to release the source to the people that they release the binaries to. If you pay the $99 then you get the binaries and the source, but without paying the $99 you don't get anything.
Err, he did DO something, and you said it yourself he hacked government owned sites. As has been said before, he was not raided for his website, he was raided for the hacking, the reason that law enforcement was so heavily armed was because of the tone of his website, they had no idea what to expect from this person.
If you had read the transcript you would have seen the following:
The Second Circuit has long held that items, destructive devices such as Molotov cocktails, simply have no legitimate purpose. They are, by definition, tools of violence
The court has held that molotov cocktails are tools of violence, ie an unregistered firearm. I do agree that the anti-terrorism law is slowly stripping of us of some basic freedoms, but Mr. Austin was being watched long before September 11.

today we'll be showing you the Intel that doesn't care about anything outside of making fast, reliable and powerful circuits.
I agree with the parent post on this. No one is in a for-profit business for the betterment of mankind. They do it to fatten their pockets. You just hope that they appreciate that doing quality work, and excelling in your field is the way to long term success. Marketing will always work in the short term, but eventually people begin to see through the wool, we hope.
Ease of install, and massive autoconfiguration. Mandrake is probably the most newbie friendly linux distro available. During the install you answer questions that are easy to understand (similar to a windows install process), and Mandrake just does the rest from there. I have had Mandrake install drivers for several sound cards, network cards, and video cards that I could not get RedHat or slackware to recognize. It also has one of the slickest installs I have seen.
This of course can be pretty trying at times for more advanced Linux users. Mandrake defaults an install without telnet, ssh, or ftp servers, and a High Security firewall. Mandrake is geared more towards a workstation machine, so if you are looking to run a server you will have some work to do after the install.
Make sure you read the fine print on that AT&T before you sign up. They are in parts of my city and they have a 250GB cap.
Excellent idea! If only there was available competition in my city to go to. Comcast is the only game in town. AT&T is here, but doesnt offer any fiber or DSL. Their system provides speeds of 768K.
A lie is a lie.. Whether he said he invented the internet or said he was instrumental in its creation; both are lies. What is the difference?

You are right, now that I think about it. All I really see advertised are 128MB devices. I guess an even 100MB device might be useful for something. :)
Is this news?
>>Seagate also announced a 2.5" portable external hard drive with 100 MB

-1 OffTopic? Come on mods. The topic was Distro's to Try. Gentoo is a great distro to try.
Hello,
I am currently a third year Computer Science major at a small southern university. I would ultimately like to complete my CS degree, attend law school, and help with the battle you are fighting (eg become an attorney for the EFF). What suggestions would you have for people like me?
Thanks,

Flamebait? This is funny people. Women in small metal bras at a linux convention. Hell I wish I had gone just for that.

Agreed. I purchased SimCity 3k the week it was released. Later Unlimited was released and I was SOL. No upgrade path, no rebate, nothing.
