But I think there might be hope for capitalism in the US afterall! Hollywood is old school and very traditional; they like things done how they've always been done and in the past have been completely unwilling to acknowledge the need for change. Luckily, the dollar is a very powerful persuader. That being said, I still really enjoy the move going experience but let's save it for movies that are actually entertaining. Let them keep making the crap but send most of it straight to DVD. Might piss the theatre chains off but business is a changing.

I know that this makes this discussion less fun but don't just assume that democracy and capitalism are irrevocably linked; if you're not trying to say that then don't compare COMMUNIST DICTATORS [read facism] to DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED officials. Democracy ain't perfect, capitalism ain't perfect but communism sure as hell doesn't work, ever. Yes I know it's never been implemented correctly; why? Maybe because of the nature of people who go in to politics; we can at least get rid of our wind bags [please no conspiracy theories about how Bush plans to change that; I don't like him and he is CLEARLY a narcissist but in his own fucked up world I think he thinks he's makin the world a better place. It's not always perfect and it's not always free but ham users are not entitled to this bandwidth although it seems as though many think they are. The world changes and shit happens; get on board or get off. You have every right to get off and disagree but there are serious consequences to it and most people arn't willing to accept that; we all want our cake and want to eat it too.

Oh and personally, I'd rather have people out in bumfuck nowhere that have no internet access currently to have the internet. Why you may ask? Despite the fact that internet is MOSTLY full of porn and people trying to get your money anyway possible it is also a place where people can come together and share ideas in a large community. Believe it or not, slashdot is a community; we're a bit dsyfunctional and I think most of us are more than a little crazy [myself included] but we're still a community. We share ideas and insights and are able to have a discussion about things like this from all over the world. In my book, that's a lot more valuable means of communication than a ham radio...feel free to disagree :)

Go read Immanual Kant's Critique of Pure Reason or Hegel's Phenomology of Spirit, if you really sit down and force yourself to try and make some sense of this stuff and you manage to make it through them your ability to read will improve ten-fold...'least it did for me. That's not critical thinking though...

In fact, you don't even have to read philosophy to accomplish a critical thinking class; instead focus on a class that focuses on logic. Learning how an argument is crafted in a logical cogent manner is an incredibly powerful thinking tool. It allows you to discern important from unimportant facts and lays the foundation for understanding the pattern that all arguments follow in order to be valid.

Then again these are my experiences, and maybe I'm just a hell of a lot smarter than most people...oh right I am.

I have found that people rise to the bar that is set; if we had a system that required people to develop critical thinking skills than some would; others wouldn't but some kids can't do algebra.
