I could be sorely mistaken here but I believe the parent was attempting to say that creationism and the theory of evolution do not have to be antinomic. Creationism, as I understand it, basically is the idea that there is some higher power or order to how the universe operates. Evolution could just be viewed as a routine developed to encourage a dynamic universe. I'm not saying that these are my personal beliefs; I'm just attempting to say that it's a little outlandish and arrogant of you to assume that a creationist can not be a good scientist.
Moreover, I believe this is as much a debate about the mixture of faith and reason. Faith is for religion, reason is for science; both are very powerful in their own realms but using faith with science is just as disastrous as using reason in religion.
Hmm, I think I'd take a a Navy Seal Team over either Guerilla Leaders or children from the slums... stop reading Science Fiction and get back to reality.
I hope there's an alternate universe where IP professionals bitch and moan on an internet bulletin board about how IT professionals are idiots who can't perform their duties.
As a memeber of said community that you are attacking, I'd like to say that I resemble that comment!
Yeah, particularly when you have one roommate who watches nothing but Discovery Wings or The Military Channel as it is called now. My TiVo suggestion thing became absolutely useless because it was inundated with garbage about Navy Seals and F14 Fighter Planes.
Give me my tinfoil hat because I doubt Franco actually caught that ball... that shit had to have hit the ground, then again I hate the Steelers [I'm a Browns fan...] wait a minute, I'm writing this post thinking someone besides me is actually going to car... how silly I am:)
Yeah I'm the exact same way, well at least with certain things. Some situations, particularly when you know the outcome is just going to be painfully embarassing... I can't watch at all. I have to turn it off because it makes me sick... laughing at a bunch of fanboys who stand outside the wrong theatre for two months, that I can laugh my ass off because those people deserve it:)
While I would argue that drugs should be legalized, I do not believe that we should force the "good guys" to fight a war with their hands tied behind their backs. There are instances where narcotic use is not really about getting closer to suspects rather about getting high but it also is a tool used to bring down crime rings. It's a heavy cost but some are willing to pay it and I'm not going to tell them otherwise...
Your friend is on crack... film, written word and television all facilitate telling different types of stories. An effective movie does not always make an effective book nor an effective TV show. Books are a space based medium so a very rich and complex story can be told with no regard to length. A movie is limited to 90 minutes to 180 minutes [there are exceptions] thus is limited in scope to how much it can develop and a much more delicate balance is required between plot/character development. Television is sort of a "best of both worlds" scenerio because you can spend time developing a character AND varios plots will still keeping ADDboy and his ilk engaged.
I would imagine that if you friend worked on his/her attention span that the person would begin to understand that the written word is still a viable form for a story.
Belief and faith are powerful because they need not be founded upon logic, reasoning or evidence. The break down occurs will be people refuse to allow those beliefs change with the climate of the world but the practice of having faith is incredibly powerful.
Am I the only one who thinks that Slashdot is really stupid on April Fool's Day? I think every story I've seen on this site today is a hoax... c'mon editors put some real shit up there...
A term recently has been added to my lexicon that is quite apropos to the Paris Hilton phenomona: celebutaunte. Think about it for a couple minutes and it all makes sense...
In a somewhat related note, it reminds me of something one of my friends Dad said, "You can go anywhere in this world with a wave and a clipboard". In essence, you play the part of someone doing something important and no one gives you flak... same sort of idea.
I agree that you should be paid for any intellectual property that you produce, what I do not agree with is the draconian approach currently being taken by the *IAA. The issue here is really about the nature of a free market economy as well as freedom of information and protecting our civil liberties. From my perspective, those are the issues that we need to be dealing with. It does us no good to focus on stealing because that is just a sidenote, in my mind, to what the case is really about. Just my two cents...
I know other posters have already touched on this point but I can't help but be redundant... I'm on/. afterall and I have to make MY point!
To me, that's quite possibly the most insidious thing I have ever heard. I mean no direct disrespect to your friend, but to the institution of mass media I am completely and utterly appauled. We exist in a free market economy; this free market economy was the reason why these mass media outlets were able to rise to the top. They had some sort of advantage over all the other guys who were doing media; maybe they produced better stuff, maybe they just convinced people through advertising that they had better stuff, maybe they really sucked and we were all too stupid to realize it and supported them but the fact is we're a free market economy. There concerns about this are justified in the sense that they need to prepare to COMPETE with this not crush it before it happens. That's not free market, that's socialism.
Yeah I wasn't trying to argue that XP is more stable than Linux because that just isn't true. Merely responding to the abudance of "Microsoft sucks at everything!" that tends to go on at/. I'm not too keen on some of microsofts business practices but if my company ran linux I probably wouldn't have a job so I really can't complain:) More importantly, any geek alive owes a thank you to microsoft, not necessarily for their software but for turning computers from a frindge industry [a la those radio things from the 70's... I dunno before my time] into something that has mainstream acceptance and appeal... I mean guys Paris Hilton has a Sidekick and I know everyone on here just LOVES Paris Hilton.
I haven't rebooted my computer at work in two weeks and it's running Windows XP w/o any problems... it's like anything if it is set up well and you use high quality parts, even microsoft products are respectable these days.
I don't think that this is a problem that is centered on the "male gaming community"; rather I'd postulate that the cause of this is the percieved anonomnity that the internet provides. These individuals would never behave this way in person because there would be immediate reprecussions but online you can more or less get away with it.
Thank you for having a sound and valid statement unlike most of the yahoos on/. Blizzard is operating in the real world, with real problems and real dead lines; not geek fantasy camp. Blizzard did not anticipate this kind of success but I do believe they are doing everything within their power to allieviate any future problems. Besides, if it's that bad cancel your god damn account for six months and then come back. No one has a gun to your heads...
"People can be drug-free, and apparently 50% of Americans manage that for their entire lives"
C'mon now let's not be naive. There are two types of drugs in this country; the type that our government tells us we are allowed to use and the type that are sold illegally on the street. Let's all grow up a little and realize that we are all "drug-addicts" of some kind or another. To some, this may sound like tin-foil propaganda but we exist in a consumer society. We buy and we sell and drugs are someone that people can get you to keep buying over and over again until you become dependant on them. A substance does not have to be an opiate to be considered a drug; hell anyone who watches TV can show you ancedotal evidence that we are a society of drug addicts.
I realize this is completely off-topic but it'd be nice if the US Government would start to deal with the real reasons why people begin using drugs and stop worrying about drugs themeselves. I know some of you may think I'm crazy, but I am of the belief that drug use is often a "crutch" for some other problem. We attack the symptons, not the problems again sorry for the rant...
You probably didn't know the people in question nearly as well as you think. I've dealt with abuse of alcohol in my own life and I have friends who are dealing with "harder" drugs. There is a single unifying theme in the things that we discuss regarding our habits and it has to do with issues that are deeper than the surface of merely using a substance. There is a reason for the behavior, it's why transferance of addictions is so common.
Most people who engage in destructive and compulsive behavior often do so in order to avoid something in real life. This can be attained through drugs or through video games, it's all doing the same thing (and yes Heroine and Video Games do very similar things biochemically... they both release dopamine!).

Can we please stop with the In Soviet Russia lines, it's really really really old.
Actually in the matrix it was "temet nosce" ... why they used latin instead of the greek is beyond me. I may have misspelled it but you get the idea...
Hmm, I think I'd take a a Navy Seal Team over either Guerilla Leaders or children from the slums ... stop reading Science Fiction and get back to reality.
Can I push the big red button of doom?
I'm not quite sure if you can use the Chewbacca defense anymore ... Cochran is dead :-/
