I mean really, does it matter?
in my entire life i have never needed to call tech support and ask anything aside from "is the network down?"
i've had dozens of tech reps trying to convince me that certain problems were on my end, some of which to i insisted that it wasnt, gotten the runnaround, and then he/she "found out" that a reuter was down in my area. some i have played along with, when they told me to do this and that, i replied "yep ok" while playing solitaire, and after all my pretend changes i made, 30 min or so later, my connection worked. the point is, if you know what you're doing and know your computer fairly well (as i assume the majority of the/. community does) it couldnt matter if you were running an obscure OS written by the rubber people from the rain forests. isp tech support is a joke.
not to mention that a good number of MS "fixes" broke something else in the process.. if you want to talk about code red, i know a few people who had no choice but to deal with code red because the MS fix made their cdr's or printer/fax stop working.
trading one bug for another is *not* a fix. The only thing microsoft has ever done right, was make computers more accessable to the non-technically inclined. but thats all IMHO really..
but then it would just delay the enevitable, seeing as how the cpu will burnout in a matter of seconds.. my sugestion was based on a way to get the cpu to last long enough to shut down the computer properly and save important data, while allowing the cpu to survive the ordeal.
then again, i am not an R&D pro, so who knows.. theres probably even more ways to accomplish this..
it should be integrated into the cmos to choose if you want to shut off the power instantly, or throttle the cpu to a lower speed and managable temp to let the system shut down properly. I'm sure a 1.5GHz cpu could function at a low temp if reset to a 66mhz bus (or even 33) and lower multiplier, just enough power to save any data and exit gracefully.
then again, isnt that what intel got bashed for doing with their p4? i'm not sure on the specifics of the why's how's and when's of p4's power throttle, all i remember is people pointing at p4 and saying "bad". Doesnt sound so bad now tho.
I imagine the most important point to any failsafe like that is letting the user know clearly why exactly their computer shut down, or is running incredibly slow. maybe having the soundcard play some 70's pron music in the background would be a good enough indication that something is getting too hot?:P
Call me stupid if you want to, but i personally feel that the very best way to make *nix a player in the game industry and not a follower is not through emulation, but rather to take a page from Borland's book with delphi/kylix. imagine if someone took the time to develop a development suite for unix that supported the source code for applications written in windows C++/VB/VC++/etc line for line in the exact same syntax? it really wouldnt matter how different the opperating systems were if the compiler took that into account, all that would matter is that to the programmer it would be as easy as booting into linux, popping in the source code, and boom, cross platform.
now before you tell me that this can't be done, for whatever reasons, this is just an idea, so close your eyes and imagine if it were possible.
or one final thought is, if wine can translate windows APIs internally, would it be all that difficult to then have it spit out a translated binary for unix?
sorry, couln't resist...
Can anyone see the inevitable military applications of this technology? and you all thought it was fantasy when Bugs would bend Fud's shot gun barrel around to face the other way.. now if only they could perfect this technology before they send in troops after the taliban.
of course, then the military would have to train some of the not so bright grunts on when *not* to shoot.:/
"Maybe they instead need to be told to stop abdicating their parenting responsibilities to the TV or the Internet and start getting personally involved with raising their kids"
I couldn't agree more. I've recently had a friend who is a mother ask me if there's any way i can help her get her daughter banned off of ICQ, MSN, and the other IM/chat programs, to which i answered no. She's worried her daughter is or may do something on there that she shouldn't be doing.
I tried to answer in the most diplomatic way i could, but i wanted to tell her try being a mother.. when i was a child, if there was something i wasn't supposed to do, my parents didn't need m4d h4X0r Sk1llz, or key logers or any new fangled conspiracy software to stop me from doing it, they used parenting to prevent me from getting in trouble.. (well to try to, anyway)
bottom line is, a child can get into trouble doing just about anything, on or off the internet, and those who don't want to be a full time parent are just going to have to face the fact that they are to blame, not the TV, not the internet, not any of the technology they try to use as a babysitter. Quit passing the buck and learn how to be a parent.
Any half assed job is going to have half assed results, why do some people assume that that doesn't include parenting?
I can see it now. We'd have to start another disscussion board to rant about taco's lobbying against using windows (sorry, but i use it for games) or making "user friendly" ilegal, or perhaps even banning proper spelling and gramar?
nice, but not very impressive, you wanna wow me, port/emulate MS IIS server onto linux and lets get come code red and nimda (?) network action going!
Being invulnerable to these virii has gone on long enough and has made the linux community soft and lazy, may we all live in interesting times...
It began, "Phil -- I hope you can sleep at night with the blood of 5,000 people on your hands." PGP has become a "weapon of war,"

About the only maxis games that got me were the first simcity and afterwards, the sims. the later simcity games really didnt do it for me, but thats all a matter of oppinion, i'm quite positive there would have been some players who would have loved this game if it didnt get killed. but oh well...
While some people hated the sims, i loved it. Almost our whole family got addicted to playing it far too many hours a day. to the point that it made itself into our real lives. I still lmao when i think of the time i had supper at my sister's house one night, and then after i was finished i stood up, put my plate on the floor, said "blah blah, bla bla bla!" and walked away... lol.. we all practically cried with laughter, while my parents looked at us like we were idiots, not getting the joke.. ah well.. now my mother playes it like mad..
It doesn't surprise me... If theres one thing i have the least respect for, its people as a whole.. someone once said "a person is smart, but people are stupid"
I'm sure if the FBI had blamed the attack on their inability to scan the terrorists' hard drives, 72% of people would aprove a ban on storage media bigger than a floppy...
Hey, how about we ban airplanes? that certainly would prevent a repeat of tuesday's events, right?
And if his hard drive crashes, he's essentially lost everything.. Theres two schools of thought on that, some believe its safer to keep your info at home, and others think an offsite storage is more prudent. I personally aggree with you on this subject, but i was just pointing out why people use these services, not saying that i think it's a great thing..
Yes but don't forget that our era is based on laziness. Anything that makes our lives just that tiny little bit easier is essential to some people. How many people will spend 30 minutes looking for the remote when they could just walk up and change the channel?
Then theres people like my father who *can't* remember half their information. Sometimes i have to call him to get his new email address cause he forgot his password and had to register a new account.. now if only he could get a fingerprint authenticy device to log him into one server that could feed whatever else to whatever site he needed...
I don't know, Its a good idea for some, and a bad idea to others. It depends on what you like. just respect other peoples' choices to decide what THEY like...
All i was saying is that the US is in no way as angelic as they would like to appear... you can't rightfully condemn one nation for doing near the same thing you've done, thats just hyprocitical period. an di will clairify, i am *not* defending the sicko's who pulled tusday's attack, i'm as outraged as the next guy, but i cant swallow all this propaganda without choking. yes i want to see whoever did this pay, and pay dearly, but i also want to see another reaction, one of change. One where the american government finally stands up and admits it's wrongs in the past and change their forign policy. The more you try to hide behind lies and redirect the puplic's attention to someone ELSE's crimes, the more you look liek a worthless hyprocrite (to those of us able to anaylize current events without being swayed with the rest of the sheep)
but all this is oppinion, i'll never have enough education to be able to properly anaylize everything thats going on, but i can't help but pipe in my 0.02 when i see so many people eating up the PR and missinformation.
You know, the irony is almost funny.. Am i the only one who looks at these threats to "take out" anyone who even funded terrorists, and remember that the US gov *itself* has funded some groups, trained then and provided them with weapons? Does that not scream hypocrite?
Time for the so-called "good guys" to wear the shoe, cause it fits...
disclaimer: i am *not* anti-american, it's just that i cant stand this level double standards.
You all (mostly) bring forth good points, but who is right? as long as information is met with dissinformation and apathy, no one is right, no one will win. i personally find America's foreign policy distastful, but neither do i aggree with any other country's policy's either. but if theres one lesson we can learn from the middle east is that hate and finger pointing is NEVER going to result in a winner, only more and more deaths.. they've been fighting their holy wars and so on for countless ages, and regardless how loud someone screams blame at the other, it wont solve a d.a.m.n thing.
There are only 2 choices here.. someone has to back down in the name of peace (which i seriously doubt will ever happen), or be prepared to kill them.. kill them all, because if you leave one left alive, the hate will continue and so will the "war"... and somehow i don't see THAT happening either... so you know what? this will just continue... more contrys to sanction, to bomb, and they will continue to hate the states, and terrorists will continue to attack americans in any way they can.
