I think what the French are getting at is that CR owners need to change the way that they protect their content.

I think at the root of the file sharing debate is an issue of access to information. Now that distribution methods have changed so much in 10 years, those that control the distribution are seeing their way of life disappear, and they are fighting tooth and nail to hold back innovation and progress to keep things pointed in their favor. I think this is why we see so many posts on /. about the RIAA "ripping us off". They are not ripping us off when we buy a CD from them, but they are trying to keep back what could be (is?) a great future step for distribution of media because they don't have the same kind of control over it.

The government should not be siding with big business and let them get away with this, but I think that's too late. P2P is going to stay in the relm of illegal for a long, long time.

I never said that the internet grabbed me in a dark alley and forced me to become addicted to it. I know I played a part in the addiction. What I am saying is that there can, in some people, be a danger associated with information overload.

I personally think that recreational drugs should be leagal. People should understand what the drug can do to them and understand the potential consequences of them. I think we are learning that there can, in some people, be a side effect from using the Internet too much. It's ignorant to think that just because something does not effect you, it's not going to effect me.

I actually am starting to see a therapist, and taking steps towards getting better. It's a complicated issue.

Your anger at my post indicates that perhaps you have some issues that could be worked out as well?

Good point- look at it a little bigger: Steve Jobs said a few years ago, and I personally agree with this, that the Personal Computer had entered a dark age of sorts. While I agree that things are getting fast and better under the hood, nothing is really changing about the computer. Grab a computer from 5 year ago with one today. What's the difference? Wi-Fi. Everything else on a typical computer today is like something 5 years ago, just faster.

I still have a G3 FW Powerbook that is running Panther. It's not SUPER fast, but it gets the job done. No need to buy something new, because anything new is just faster, not better, per say.

The fight will extend to portable devices shortly, where everything stays the same, just gets faster. The Bells and whitles don't increase, they just get louder.

One of the great things about mp3 is that a lot of bands can get bigger attention without having the distribution network (I.E. CD stores) that they used to need. Apple is starting to control music the way the RIAA used to. If they wanted to go "all the way", they should make it easy for any band to open up shop and sell through the iTMS.

The current generation of music stars will stick with their labels (or be forced to), but new, unheard-of bands can gain popularity and make money off their music. They won't need a label, other than iTMS, and the RIAA will go down the tubes real quick.

Then Apple will have a stranglhold on the music industry. They will then force every song added to the iTMS to include a lyric about buying a Mac. Soon, Microsoft and Dell will crumble. Apple will be left standing along in a sea of dead computer companies, all because of a freaking music player.

I'm willing to bet the team wanted to disrupt the surrounding area around the craft as little as poissible. If you wait for a an extended force, that's time that the craft is on the group firing it's rockets into the ground doing nothing but churning up the landscape.

Why is there not a standard design mars landing vehicle, one that can be used to deploy any payload upto say 8^3m meters in volume, it would solve a lot of issues and reduce the overall mission costs, if designed well it could be used to land on other bodies (moon/IO/Europa) with only a slight modification to fuel levels/Paracute size/airbag preasure.

There's no standard design because we're still looking for the best solution! We've only landed a handful of times. Don't forget it's not just the landing to consider, but how we get the thing there. The systems used for the Rovers did pretty well for themselves, and I bet we see more of the Bouncy-Ball design in the future. However, landing location has a lot to do with landing type. The ice caps might in general have too delicate of a surface to ensure the bouncy-ball design work well there.

I'm sure that with continued missions, a more standard solution will come into effect.

The other issue there is risk- if the punishment for accessing censored data is a $5 fine, people will do it. If the fine suddenly becomes imprisonment, well then, even those people that could get away with it might think twice.
