"I would put my pilot out on the internet in a heartbeat. Want five more? Come buy the boxed set. Frankly, I'm all for this method of distribution, as I barely watch 'regular' TV anymore."

And how many shows can you name whose pilots were complete crap, but only came into their own as a series a season or two later? Here is yet another person claiming to be the pulse of America when America still has a huge population of TV viewers, just because he doesn't watch a lot. Clue: It's not about you and your habits. Do you honestly think we'd even have a Serenity movie if people only caught the pilot, download the rest online? Maybe a bad example because the pilot was actually good, but I still doubt it.

Frankly, Roger, I think you'd be shooting yourself in the foot with that mentality.

Now I know anything to do with space and the words "global warming" tend to induce a frontal lobotomy in many Sladot readers, but there are people actually taking this seriously??? Come on, there's gotta be something left in that cavernous skull to realize this has got to be one massive joke. I mean, somebody seriously misplaced the foot icon here.

Look at it this way... You've got $6 trillion to $500 trillion dollars burning a hole in your "save the earth" pocket. Dontcha think that maybe, just maybe you could put that money to better use by throwing it at something that doesn't require lobbing multiton roman candles into orbit? I mean $500 trillion . You honestly can't think of an industry or two here on the ground you could revolutionize overnight, let alone in the time it'd take to assemble THIS project?

Speaking of that, what sort of time frame are we talking? Any mention of such is amazingly absent. And we haven't EVEN gotten into the fact that the scientific community is still deeply divided on the exact cause of global warrming. Everything from man's impact to the natural warming and cooling cycles of the earth come into play. Hell, there are even published scientifc reports that say the Sun is hotter than previously measured. We still don't have a conclusive clue and these people want to throw a reflective tarp over a portion of the earth. What is the damn environmental impact of THAT? What happens to the plant and animal life UNDER it? Not as much heat or sun, that's for sure. Draw your own conclusions.

I'm sorry, but this is a prime example of what happens when people who think they're smart smoke crack. They find implausible and extrodinairy ways to waste our money.

Sorry, but I'm gonna call bullshit on this one. "Open up"? You do realize what we're referencing here, right? Word documents? Spreadsheets? Text? It's not as if you need a proprietary reader to use them anymore in the first place. For all intents and purposes, these items are open, or close enough not to matter. So what "proprietary formats are we actually talking about? .pdf is a proprietary format. Gonna get rid of that too? And even then one has to ask why they are being used in the first place?

Somebody else earlier on mentioned that this action will also promote competition. Again, we're seriously wading it it because whatever "mystery proprietary format" they're using now got that position for some reason, most likely because there WAS compeition and it didn't stack up to what they decided to go with and are using now. Or their is some decent amount of governemntal corruption in our righteous tale of open source, your choice. But don't even kid yourself; Outright removing a competitor is not promoting compeition. That's somebodies political cudgel at work. because if there really is something better out there, you can name it and replace what you have, not exile a company on the moral high grounds of open source just because it's not open source. it's a justification and an excuse, nothing more.

Sorry, this entire thing reeks of a political blugeon and if they're willing to exile MS, it can work the opposite way too for open source. Keep that in mind as you put MS to the fire.

But consoles are different, probably because just leaving them on doesn't really accomplish anything useful for 90% of the people. They boot nearly instantaneously and will have to load the media from scratch anyway, regardless of whether you leave it on or off. It's like there's no point to do so. Unless I missed a clue somewhere, i can't EVER remember walking into ANYBODIES room to find the console just left on, unless it was purely by accident. It's just not the trend and stuff like Seti and folding can't easily piggyback off something that isn't already an ingrained habit.
