"A new survey published in the New York Times states that using the internet has seriously cut into our socializing time. We spend less time watching TV and more time using the internet and following up email.

Also following up on email got to account for just a little bit of socializing.

Many countries in the worlds already make concessions for work vehicles. I just think that we don't need technical equipment in cars to charge for usage of roads. We already have the means to handle this through gas taxes. However, I think any California guvernor trying to increase the cost for California drivers will find himself voted out just as fast as Gray Davis, even if you're a famous movie star.

A: Some parts I love. I have a convertible. I will never ever move to a place where I can't drive a convertible. I like the dynamics. Sometimes it's sad how you go into a random restaurant and all the tables around you talk about technology. At the same time, it is nice to be where you understand the people. Genetically maybe not very homogenous. But perspective wise, it's a nice place to be. It's too crowded. It's too expensive.

I know people who have told me similar stories, however I think this pattern is pretty well-known by now.
It never makes sense to put all your eggs in the same basket; never give a distributor that much power over you! You're only creating a weak negotiation position for yourself.
The article said that Walmart was tired of selling CDs for a loss, well no one forces them to do that, so I don't really see their point. However I do think that CDs are over-priced but that's a different issue.

While I don't agree with this practice, I am glad to see it getting turned on the record companies now, since they've been ripping me and other consumers off for years. Let the jackals tear each other to pieces...

If the recording industry sells their CDs for a lower price to Walmart this would most likely lead to lower prices in other stores as well, and that would be a good thing. It's hard to defend a high price point on a product once you start slashing your prices on it.

My point is in short, forcing consumer and some companies to pay for the software they use today will just make them realize that they can't "afford" it, so the "have" to look for alernatives. Whether or not the big media companies like this or not wont matter, unless they are willing to pick up tab.

I foresee that two things will happen:
    - software prices will go down
    - usage of open source software will continue to increase

Most consumers and companies will always require a certain level of support and companies does provide this, while if you use open source software support and documentation is very often lacking.
More and more companies are already popping up that sells support and other value added services for open source software, however I don't think comercial software companies will ever go away, some form of balance will be found sooner or later.
