It got fought in the courts for about a year and a half and then boom. No more Comcast.

So I had a couple years' slog with DSL (bought straight from AT&T so as not to pay the Suite Solutions markup) until I finally got fed up with that, and other situations, and moved the fuck out.

  18. Re:people want cheap on Ask Slashdot: Why Do Most Tablet Specs Suck? · · Score: 0

    Two words on this:

    LIFESTYLE ACCESSORY.

That's basically all Apple is actually any good for nowadays. Affluence signaling...

The thing is, compared to other devices, tablets are actually MORE expensive due to the need to reduce weight and size. This magnifies the cost impact when moving up to a superior spec for hardware. And, as has been noted, most people don't WANT to pay beaucoup buckage for a superior tablet. This means creation of a separate SKU that they KNOW isn't going to sell well. As such, the price becomes even HIGHER as they tack in enough surcharge to make it financially worth carrying the extra, low-volume SKU.

Additionally, most tablets are media CONSUMPTION devices. As such, so long as they can roughly handle the software load for all the formats they're expected to use, they're "good enough". In a lot of cases, a workstation-spec tablet is pointless, as it isn't delivering a superior media consumption experience and nobody in their right mind performs more than VERY cursory media creation tasks on one.

As such, guided by the market, manufacturers have somewhat rigidly defined the loadout and form factor for a tablet. And that's cheap, low power, low space and totally un-upgradeable.

I hope further testing accelerates this project's scheduling and allows it to jump start a full-blown industry...
