Well, if this is any help, - I am 28, slim, I don't smoke, I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day, no blood pressure problems last time I checked, I sleep 8 hours per night and I find my line of work interesting...... and I still can't work properly at 25 degrees Celsius. At home and at work the room temperature is 21 degrees. In the middle of summer, when it's hot outside, I can tolerate 24 degrees, but anything above is distracting.
I think the grandparent was referring to TSR as Terminate and Stay Resident - they were programs in the MS DOS era that enabled some sort of crude multitasking by use of interrupts. Such programs could monitor disk or keyboard activity, stuff like that.
I definitely wouldn't considered Shrek as "worst", but I didn't like it either. As you have said, I couldn't connect, root or feel anything towards the characters.
At the same time I saw Monsters, Inc. and it still is one of my favourite movies, and probably the best Pixar movie so far.
You didn't read the artcle carefully and/or you never actually tried to do it yourself.
The prblem with a PS filter is that it has no knowledge of time. Each drawing would be different without continuity. Given its random nature, such a filter would apply different strokes on sequential frames, even on static areas. This can be very distracting. I've seen it done, sometimes it's OK as an "animated sketch" effect, (think A-Ha, Take on Me video) but usually it doesn't look really good.
I don't get it... not meaning to troll, but is the parent poster really stupid?
If you have a point with "rays" coming out of it, the sum of all angles formed by the rays will always be 360 degrees. You don't have to measure anything.
"Also, maybe it's just the CS version, but ImageReady is a buggy piece of shit"
If you use Flash, then why don't invest in Macromedia Studio and get Fireworks? It's ages better than Image Ready. Really, Adobe wanted to have a FW alternative but they failed...
I could just as well replace porn-->black with porn-->crime or criminal to prove my point.
"Most communities regulate who's allowed in it, housing prices, etc. very strictly. In fact, in the South there are still many towns that do not have a single crime. Even if you, personally, like and commit crimes in the privacy of your own home, if you leased an office building, you probably wouldn't want a criminal moving in on either side of you"
See? I'm not saying that porn==crime, but I could try to use this argument, and it would be just as wrong as comparing porn with a black person.
Sorry, but I think most laptops are being stolen for hardware, not because of the software on them.
You are of course correct, keeping sensitive data encrypted on a laptop is the sensible thing to do but it's not enough. The thief will boot from a CD and simply reformat the hard drive.
Espionage is a different matter of course, but any agent carrying secret data on a laptop who lets the laptop out of sight allowing it to be stolen, should be put in jail.
As someone noted on/. when the code was leaked, it appears that the code orginated from Mainsoft, a MS partner that had access to source code before the Shared Source initiative.
Parent is right. Investing in standards may be hard initially but it pays off in the long term.
Oned of the first commercial sites I designed back in 1997 was using all the cutting edge stuff of the time - HTML 4.0, working on the brand-new at the time NS4 and IE4.
Now, in 2004 that site still looks good and it's compatible with everything, with no redesign.
Unfortunately SVG isn't taking off. It looks good on paper but until there's a small&fast plugin for it (like Flash) or it integrated in IE, there won't be much content availavble for it.
Unfortunately, in the case of the company I work for, it's quite true. Our site gets about 15,000 visitors/day (1.4 Gb/day). The site doesn't have any MS-centric content. The stats for February (1 to 9) are as follows:
MS IE 1588660 96.1 Netscape 40769 2.4 Unknown 1.0 Opera 4767 0.2 Konqueror 140
Here are the Operating systems:
Windows XP 890261 53.8 % Windows 98 283140 17.1 % Windows 2000 266814 16.1 % Windows Me 105024 6.3 % Mac OS 40932 2.4 % Windows NT 35788 2.1 % Unknown 18021 1 % Windows 95 10908 0.6 % Linux 1335 0 %
I could go into more detail (IE/NS versions) but I think this is enough.
the "non-open Flash format" argument is so old is not funny anymore.
The Flash IDE is proprietary. The Flash file format is open and documented. You can write your own program to create or read flash files like so many have.
SVG may be nice but with 98% market penetration I don't see Flash disappearing anytime soon. Also, considering its graphics+animation+sound+video (sorenson based) capabilities, coupled with a pretty good language (based on ECMAScript 4), Flash is a very powerful tool.
I realize that/. is an anti-Flash crowd, but as a technology Flash is no more evil than animated gifs. Both are abused by advertisers but both have legitimate uses.
I've heard this argument a million times. Terms like "maximize value", "increase revenue", "pursue", "enforce", "leverage", "competitive advantage" are all fine but what about "MORAL"?
Why isn't anyone ansking "is it moral to do this?"
I'm the co-owner of an East European multimedia software company, founded in '97. We have contracts with some really big companies. We have to stay competitive, keep the old clients, get new ones, convince them of how much quality we can offer, how trustworthy we are... And for every decision I ask myself "Is it moral?" I don't want to screw my customer, I genuinely want to be a win-win. Furthermore, I don't want to hate the face I see in the mirror.
Yeah, I probably won't be buying a Porsche this year, but I am proud of the work my team is doing and I have a clear conscience.
Old-fashioned? Cliched? Maybe. But a business CAN be run without fucking everyone for the sake of increased revenue.
This is modded Funny, but I think it's Insightful.
The bike is not exactly a safe mode of transporation, but I don't see any public outcry, mothers demanding bikes to be banned, Fox making a two-hour show on the horror of bike accidents and CPSC recalling them.
I love riding my bike, but lets admit as much: a bicycle isn't exactly a safe mode of transporation, but we don't see CPSC announcing that bikes are unsafe because if you don't pedal and you lose your balance, you will fall.
We are used to this, we understand the limitations and we accept the risks to the degree that we don't consider them as risks. Heck, the motorcycle is a pretty dangerous vehicle too.

I already have it, and for quite some time. It's a MSI motherboard with AMI BIOS. I'm pretty sure that all modern BIOSes have this option.

You CAN download SP2 RC2. It works just fine on my laptop.

For illustration, Corel Draw is unbeatable in my opinion and Illustrator and Freehand don't even come close.
For photo editing, Corel PhotoPaint can be a Photoshop replacement in many cases although I admit that some tools don't work as well as PS.
This is a trick, and you (should) know it.

AVG has a free edition, with free virus updates too. I don't like the interface, but it gets a decent job at scanning the email attachments.
Depends on what you are using the camera for...
.CRW files.
I have my 4Mp camera shoot RAW, and a 512 Mb card can only hold 84
Now why I use RAW instead of JPG is a different matter (lossless, I can adjust color balance later - it's more like a difgital negative)

In my country, the dominant religion is Christian Orthodoxy (simpler, no pope, priests can marry, etc.)
The orthodox churches don't have organs. People still go to church.
Unfortunately it goes both ways: :-(

Ahhh, but there's a problem with this.
All digicams (except Canon 1Ds and a Kodak model) have much smaller sensors than a 35mm frame (consumer cameras are like 4-5 times smaller).
With smaller frame, the depth of field increases. Pictures taken at F2.8 with my Canon G2 look like pictures taken at F16 with my Minolta film SRL.
But I agree, the Sony camera really has a nice lens.
Canon 1D does not have a full frame sensor, it still has a 1.3x focal multiplier...
Canon 1Ds really has a sensor the size of a 35mm film (36x24mm) but last time I checked it was $9000 body only.
Kodak also has a full-frame SRL priced at $4500
