I used to preach the AMD mantra. Unfortunately, there are ALWAYS some issues when building an AMD system. I am just tired of discovering the obscure incompatability. For example, most of my old AMD systems had USB issues. My Athlon X2 system had major dual-core issues with certain games.
My last build is 2 years old - an Intel core2 duo system. The whole system is flawless - it plays all the games I want and runs my multimedia center on my home theater. I never have to worry about it.
I WANT to support the underdog, but I can no longer accept the consequences.
Agreed. DEC during the 80's and 90's was a magical place. I benefited from their generosity going to school in Nashua, NH. They donated PDP-11's and eventually VAXEN to the high schools and local library.
I sat down at a terminal of the PDP-11 at the library, and the rest is, as they say, history. They launched my career and I am eternally grateful.
I got to visit the Spit Brook facility as a teenager. It was like visiting Mt. Olympus.
BTW, black flies don't give lyme disease - ticks do. Black flies come out in May and torment you by flying around your head in swarms. Ticks latch onto your body and suck your blood.
Uh, no. I'm not eager to use a hip browser to go along with my jesus phone and elitist computer. Sorry Steve Jobs, you can keep your browser.
I read about chrome in wired, where they clearly stated this as a design goal. Does a WebKit browser preclude performance? Are you turned off by an open API to make development easier?
As a lifelong resident of NH I have already gone through the 5 stages of grieving over the loss of our state's icon. Now they want to create a zombie-like replacement? No thank you.
Besides, the best part of that mountain is the skiing on the other side: Cannon Mt.
You miss the point. I play paintball too. The training it gives you is strategy and the general visceral experience of combat. As any first time player will confess, it gives a great appreciation for how easy it is to get hit. You think you can dash across the field to the next shelter, but more often than not you get tagged. If you can translate that experience into what would happen in real combat, it is a valuable lesson.
Essentially, paintball gives you a do-over that real combat would not give.
If you take the money you are guaranteed to lose control of your "baby". If you are ok with that, then go ahead. The adage "a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush" might apply here. You can take the money and run. Just realize any corporation is going to take your creation in a direction you won't like. If you are willing to let it go, then go for it.
Just remember, money does not buy happiness, but it does pays the bills.
Agreed. I have found hulu's ad content to be quite tolerable. I am surprised all the TV networks aren't jumping on the bandwagon. The advertisers get better exposure than the typical commercial hopping performed by tivo users.
I use beyondtv and have the added benefit if blowing through a whole block of commercials in one swell foop (when the smartskip algorithm works).
Thank you, thank you, thank you! That game is a blast. It really points out how a fun game does not need state-of-the-art graphics. It reminds me of the days playing text based adventure games on PDP-11s, including the pre-Zork game DUNGEON.
Duh! It's a botnet. Nobody is saying there are 70K Chinese people doing this.
And YES, every login attempt is serious. Especially if they are using methodical attacks. It's not like they are trying to login as c00ldude 70K times. They are trying 70K possibilities, which eventually might find a match.
We have spent the last 2 weeks fending off Chinese hackers. They started with a legit login, extracting valuable data from our subscription-only site. Once we locked that down, the attacks started with methodical login attempts. We've blocked IPs, but they have jumped around, apparently using a botnet.
Thanks to the prevalence of stolen Microsoft operating systems in China, unpatched copies of windows abound, leaving them open to botnet slavery.
Uh - try 43. Isn't it the 18 yos that are flocking to all these stupid sites? They can wire their cellphone up to tweet, fb, etc., but they can't code to save their lives.
Apart from having an apparent large group of virtual friends, what exactly does fb prove?
To be fair, linkedin is the exception to the rule. It has proven to be a good way to keep connected with old co-workers.
Wait, don't move, or go anywhere. You must be the guy who came up with that idea, let me call the firing squad.
If you have a document in that format, let me download it and view it full screen, not in some 200x200 pixel frame with browser crashes and insane loading times.
Ummm... so how does loading it in a full window speed up load time? I'm not talking about a small window embedded in a sucky ad-burdened-site. I'm talking about a 40 pixel banner at the top identifying the site and providing a simple set of text links for the app. Under the banner is the PDF.
Maybe I'm off-base here, but I would not compare embedded PDFs to embedded office files. PDFs have become ubiquitous enough to justify their use. Our app provides access to a very large collection of PDF docs and we want to provide an integrated view of them.
I once had to share a "cubette" with 2 other guys. By cubette, I mean 1/2 a normal-sized cube. Imagine writing code shoulder to shoulder with 2 other engineers. It was like flying coach class at the the window seat. Getting out required everybody to move.
We also know about the typical lack of hygiene exercised by most engineers.

Chrome was designed with JavaScript performance as a top goal. So why are we surprised it performs well?
LOL! I was thinking the same thing.
Personally, I prefer the Lazy Bob.
Greatest state in the union. Deal with it.
No doubt! I've been here 43 years since birth and I'm not leaving. I don't take it for granite.
Live free OR die. Get it right or get out of our state.
It was a JOKE. I know what the real saying is.
As a lifelong resident of NH I have already gone through the 5 stages of grieving over the loss of our state's icon. Now they want to create a zombie-like replacement? No thank you.

Hey I'm Plymouth, New Hampshire you insensitive clod.
Me too. Live free and die!

I usually don't reply just to say something was funny, but OMFG! That was the best use of an abused /. joke.
Can you be my facebook friend? Can I follow your twitter feed?
Imagine and even lighter weight shirt made of titanisilk. Frodo would be even safer from an orc blade.

"I came here for an argument."
Never mind. I made a silly comment. Obviously we could debate my broad statements for years.
Sure there are valid uses. My point is that the implication that I must be on FB, myspace, twitter to be relevant is what is annoying.
They are trendy fads that serve a purpose, but their importance and media attention seems overblown, IMHO.

That's because no self-respecting /.er uses facebook.
Frames are the anti-christ of HTML.
The only practical use I have found is embedding certain types of complex content, like PDFs. Those should be hosted on the same site.

I thought the legit winner was Serenity.
