When it comes to gaining knowledge there is no such thing as cheating. You may get a peace of paper that says you know something but that only goes so far. In the end it is all leveled out and those who can't cut it are dropped off anyway (only much later in life rather than in school).
For the majority of people in the world these days the only thing they have is their time and knowledge (and almost everyone who is not born with the silver spoon in their mouth lives off of those two). So these people are cheating themselves really.
interviewers these days. You are hiring someone with master's degree and asking them concrete questions in a single programming language?
Why don't you instead try to gauge how good the person is at solving problems, how fast do they learn and find their way around in a strange situation etc. After all their degree was supposed to teach them is how to learn fast, research and to develop mental skills and world view.
It should only be a matter of weeks or months to master any programming language for people like that.
So what if someone with a PhD in nuclear physics or pure math does not know C, or technology X, or the architecture of your business software. They will learn it faster than anyone else, and that is the point.
If you wanted brainless coder (if there is such a thing at all) you should not have interviewed anyone with a post graduate degree.
A lot of websites are now suggesting changing the permissions on the ARDAgent to remove the SUID bit on it.
This works until you repair the permissions (using disk utility which consults its database of permissions) and this puts it right back making you vulnerable again.
or elemental calcium unless it is artificially fortified.
However, in the US at least milk is a great source of antibiotics, bacteria (from puss) and all manner of hormones that the cows are regularly pumped with.
Now, enjoy your cereal and coffee.
By the way, vitamin D is not "found in UV light", it is produced by the human cells when exposed to UV light.
So why not simply remove execute bit for "others". That way users that are not root or part of the wheel group can not execute ARDAgent and assume root privileges (since it has setuid bit set).
is that they are trying to put economic penalties on users to curb the bandwidth problem, instead of putting economic incentives into new developments and technologies to solve the bandwidth problem.
Bandwidth problem will not go away, and people will always want more. There are billions to be made for companies who can invent technology to increase it (perhaps even on existing infrastructure) and I believe this is where they should concentrate their efforts on, but as usual that will not happen.
How many times have we seen this, some company trying desperately to stick to old business model and penalizing users to preserve it instead of moving on with the times?
I work with hundred thousand files and compile from the command line (a single command even):
$ make
does the trick at the top directory. Yes, that means you have to maintain the makefile but that's not that hard to do and is not done daily or even weekly.
Ok, if he knows that developers will rather quit their job then switch their IDE, why does he think he even has a business selling IDEs? It's a horrible idea to make and market a product that you know someone will put their livelihood on the line to avoid using (and they don't even have to buy it, the company does that not the developer).
What's that part about selling "really good" code editors, when there is (and has there been) VIM for almost 2 decades now and vi since 1975? Once you learn vi/vim no other editor can't compete any more, so it has to be a dumb editor for "programmers" who don't want to commit to learning a lifelong skill instead...
or does not have any RAW conversion software for any major digital SLR camera manufacturers?
Thanks but no thanks. With Mac OS X I get the best of both worlds (terminal, UNIX tools, VIM, gcc) but also Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and Nikon Capture, and all my Epson printers work with no driver installations in Leopard.
Kurzweil is one seriously messed up scientist. This guy extended the Moore's law (look up Kurzweil's law of accelerating returns) to predict that civilization as we know it will cease to exist and will effectively become the civilization of super/trans-humans or artificial intelligent beings by 2020.
Never mind all the scientific or technical obstacles that even non-scientific person could think of, let alone once we get into philosophical issues (for things we don't even have words to talk about yet).
Yet there is still a very simple reason why the prediction will not happen. Does he know how long it takes for FDA to approve a brain implant of the kind he is suggesting (even if we had one)?
I've said it before and I will say it again. This is nothing more than a religion posing as pseudo-science from a guy who takes 200 anti-aging pills hoping to reach immortality though technology.
But one thing is for sure, Kurzweil will die just like every other "prophet" before him.
It is a religion for all the believers. And there is nothing anyone can say to change their mind. I have argued on scientific and technical basis with many of them, back when they were saying that singularity would happen by 2020 (now they have revised their dates). Funny bunch for sure. Many of them base their predictions on Moore's law, which as we know is not even a law but an observational trend.
I on the other hand would be happy if Vista has stable drivers by 2020, let alone if we had "thinking machines" smarter than us:D.
but since I switched to mac, I now use spotlight to do everything, from switching context between apps to launching apps to finding documents to open. Typing 3 letters is usually enough to do all of this and is infinitely faster than moving your hand to the mouse, navigating the mouse and clicking on some area.
I would say spotlight is bringing back the power of CLI to the GUI world (well almost).
CLI is still the fastest way to work and will always be, until computers become part of our brains.
It is now actually a proven fact.
Right, you can do the same by typing in the google search box and click on I'm feeling lucky.
But the point is that e.g. "google" would be mapped to google's website at the DNS level.
that you would not have to type .com or .org any more.
You will type just google to take you to the current google.com, and pizzahut to go to pizza hut's website, or Audi to go to Audi.com website.

It sounds like something RMS could say :D... Hence the moderation.
and it's probably noisier too :D.

for comparison Lance Armstrong can produce 480 Watts for an hour on his bike.
Average car is more than 100 hp or 75,000 Watts. So, although this is a great invention it will not be the only power for the cars any time soon.
They do plan to introduce 1000 Watt (roughly 1.5 horse power) engine later.

Excel and Photoshop come to mind first... but there are numerous others as well....

that gives you a list of commands. From there you can do h or even man .
Lynx is more like VI, links is more like using GUI (it has popup dialogs, menus etc).
Some people prefer vi style of navigation through pages, myself included.
They would love you to buy internet service and never use it.
With hot file adaptive clustering ( http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1150.html#HotFile )
Basically, read only often accessed files are moved to the zone on hard drive where the access to files is fastest.
It would not be hard to adapt this behaviour to move the files onto SSD portion of the disk at all.
they should also be demanding the choice for consumers to terminate their contracts with Bell with no termination penalties.
I know a lot of ISPs have the clause in their contract that makes it costly for you to terminate the contract and switch to someone else.
Since Bell has effectively breached the contract, the customers should have the right to walk away from it as well with no repercussions.
