As is usually the case with SCO related news, Groklaw is picking the information apart. For now most of it is transcriptions of the pdf's, but also some first blush analysis.
I suppose this is the official confirmation that Vivendi has decided not to release CS:CZ. Kinda strange to learn that by not seein it on the list. Of course everything about CS:CZ's development has been strange. Maybe they plan on throwing it in free with HL2. I can't beleive they're just writing the whole project off.
I have DSL through a local provider (Zoomtown/Cincinnati Bell). For $40 a month I get 768Kbps down and 384Kbps up. Sure, not the jaw dropping numbers you can sometimes get from a cable modem, but those connection numbers are rock solid, always. I've had three service interuptions over the past two years, none lasting more than 20 minutes.
I've never received any flak for excessive usgae even though I do leave torrents open from time to time. I just looked at the terms of service and although they reserve the right to cut off my connection for the standard list of unacceptable usage, I couldn't find anything relating to a "bandwidth cap" or "excessive usage."
Unless I sign some sort of EULA when I buy stuff, I can do whatever the hell I want to them. I hope I don't have to live in a world where I have to license my underwear.
It's all governed by General Corporation Law, in this case indemnification is limited by section (e)
All they're really saying is, if we didn't have seperate D&O policies for the directors and officers before, we do now. And some other stuff to try to prevent a hostile stock take over.
This sums it all up rather nicely from that article:
But to me, the vendor -- be it Red Hat or Microsoft -- is only half of the issue; I think that we, the users, are the biggest threat to our own security. While coding errors and architectural flaws are serious problems that must be fixed, the most prevalent issues still come from default installations of all available services, blank or weak passwords, and un-patched systems.
Nah, the market hates uncertainty. If this hints at some sort of closure, even one that hurts microsoft, the market will react favorably. They've had to years to speculativly lower or raise the stock price.
I use solution 1, don't pick up the phone. I don't have caller ID. If it's important, they'll leave a message. If it's not importat enough to leave a message, then they don't talk to me.
If I happen to be expecting a call and get a telemarketer, then I ask to be placed on their DNC list before they can get to the second word of their shpeil.
This is really not that complicated folks. If you're too polite to interupt them then you shouldn't be allowed to answer the phone in the first place.
I'm not sure what my plan would be if I knew that the current down-turn was going to last another five years. I can't make myself more vital or indispensable at my current job. I suppose I could shift my investments more towards bonds and annuities. But in the end, even a five year down-turn and deflation still leaves me another 20 years until retirement. Basically, I'm just socking it away and hoping for the best.
I still continue to purchase new stuff like video games, fishing rods, etc, and I finally signed up for DSL. I'm just trying not to incurr *any* debt right now. I suppose I should take the plunge and buy a house, but I can't seem to make myself do it for some reason. Maybe I'm a slacker.
Why don't editors put in the groklaw links to keep these useless karma whores down?
Beats me. I think every SCO related article here should also link to Groklaw's analysis of the story. As for karma or mods, whatever.

This is absolutely the best outcome possible for the RIAA. Bust an underage filesharer and hit the parents for an amount that anyone can relate to.
As I understand it, you are only indemnified for the cost of your purchase from HP.
Apparently knowledge of modern slang is not one of Captain Poopypants' powers.

Foolish of Israel to so publicly pick a fight with MS.
Foolish of Microsoft to resist such an upgrade to their own software.
While I agree that Darl is probably not a complete moron, he hasn't sold any of his stock lately. A bunch of the others top suits have though.
Mine appears popular as well, although I can't imagine why. Got 40 returns in the span of one hour.
Haha, I had forgotten about that. I was at just the right age to be sucked into this holiday special and think it was the coolest thing ever.

You are talking about the SEC form 8-A12G/A from SEC's SCO page, correct?

Which of course, is a stupid thing to do, since the SS# is NOT GUARANTEED TO BE UNIQUE.

While they're are valid reasons to using something other than SS#'s for systems such as bank records, uniqueness is in fact one of it's strengths:

One of the reasons you have to keep the resumes on file is to cover your ass in case of EEOC discriminatory hiring suit.
Boy oh boy. If I had mod points, I'd exact some serious retribution for some complicated and sarcastic reason involving the moderation system.

Why not ask David Brin to do the occasional SF review? He's a busy guy and all, but at least ask him. I suspect he'd agree to doing one or two a year.
Why are you even saying no? Just ask to be put on the DNC list. If they fail to comply, they owe you money.
I simply don't fucking understand people who think they are obligated to be polite to telemarketers.

I appalled! Lets set up a distributed computing project to track down all spelling errors on /. as they happen. What's more worthy than that?
