I believe there was a turntable in the late eighties that did that. The record stayed still while the tonearm tracked linearly from the out side in and rotated the record. Couldn't find anything on google about it though. I think it might have been a Bang & Olufsen.

Of course, I'm just taking a stab - could be wrong.

Actually, because of centrifugal force and gyroscopic forces a spinning disk is inherently stable, and resistant to any turbulence or wobble. Likewise, the aerodynamic crossection of a hardrive platter is pretty negligle. Flywheels often spin at several times the speed of sound, often well over 60,000 rpm using disks measured in feet. Most operate in a vacuum condition, where there is nothing to turbulate. If a flywheel breaks vacuum suddenly the efffects might be catastrophic, The energy released during the failure of a 1 kW-h flywheel is enough to lift a mid-size car 100 feet into the air

  11. Linux Admins vs Nt on More Attacks on Linux than Windows · · Score: 3, Insightful

My Linux box reports a number of attacks against the FTP server and Apache each day

Perhaps the reason Linux gets more attacks reported is that Unix has very good logging and nix admins actually read their logs and report attacks. I knew some Nt administrators even in very big operations that never read their log files. Personally I thing the the script kiddies just scan and hit whatever they can. A linux box might be more useful once the it is compromised, but that is another issue.

While I agree that AG really did start shoving spyware down its users throats, you had many alternatives to the "official" AG satellite. The source was free, and there were several third-party satellites that didn't have spyware. I don't think they were really money grubbing as you suggest, but they needed to earn money somehow in order to support the servers and pay thier salaries. AG could have folded long ago due to bankrupcy.

AG was the best system for music, nothing else can match its organization and variety without having a central server. Decentralized P2P can never match centralized P2P.
