Please define how Winamp can't handle large databases? I have almost instant search over a couple of hundred gigs worth of video and audio, so I'm interested in what you define as "large".
Peter Snow might have been around 40 years ago, but I doubt you'd have seen Phillipa Forrester doing anything on TV then;-)
I stopped watching it a few years ago when I thought it had just gotten too dumbed-down, and looking at the new "science" (like that horrible inventors game show thing) offers from the BBC doesn't exactly make me optimisitic about them making a decent replacement for TW.
What the greeks had can hardly be compared to what we have, our situation is very different to theirs.
They didn't have tabloid media getting people in to a frenzy over, for example, paedophiles, where it even goes so far that people go and attack a paediatrician. This could happen with (almost) anything the red-tops decide to sink their teeth in to.
It is true that what people want doesn't always equal what's good for the nation as a whole (and in the long-term individual citizens as well). If people were able to vote in anything they wanted, we'd have zero taxes and free money, but it wouldn't really work well for very long, or I at least wouldn't want to try.
It is also true that the current system is not functioning as it should, it is still functioning and does a pretty good job of it and it's pretty much the best we have.
I know this is going a bit OT but if the US had GSM, you could just get a pre-paid account, which start here (in Belgium) for about ~25 EUR and that gives you between 12 and 25 call credit. That even includes roaming in most of Europe with all operators here.
posted this earlier today, with some more details. Personally, from what I understand about it, this is a Good Thing (TM), because RealNetworks Realplayer offerings on Linux have always been a bit...crap? (Yes I know, the codec itself is still closed source, but still)
Well, the Official Secrets Act is a pretty good censoring tool as was also talked about (sort of) here Relating to a Cryptome article which is a quite recent display of its powers. I'm sure that if you Google for it you'd be able to find many, many more cases.
OK, I'll admit, I'm half English, but have never lived there or anything. Having said that, don't see why you can't be proud of being the first country to drop slavery. Of course, that's forgetting the colonies.
But my point was just that whilst the original poster seemed to be trying to imply that Australia was a wonderful, ethical country, it is not without it's faults, just as any other country out there.
Nice comment, although I don't understand the gAIM thing... I'm using it right now, exclusively for MSN and have had 0 issues with it. Oh well, it still beats EveryBuddy to death;)
I always thought the English situation was rather interesting.
I'm English, but live in Belgium, where we've had phones seperate from the operator since the early 90's (no sim-locking etc) and we have a _very_ low theft rate and I definitely haven't seen anything like the goverment campaigns I've seen in the UK.
So maybe the problem is more English than anything else? (Not trying to flame, just thinking out loud)
I hope you don't think everyone in the UK speaks the queen's English, as you will be sorely disappointed. Epecially by Essex.

I dunno it's pretty hard to beat this judge
Just because the state isn't doesn't mean the people aren't.
How do you collect $200 from SourceForge? Free money is always appreciated *g*

If it takes us several decades to crack, haven't they already won this round?
Surely if they say see below at #5 then it could be anything between #4 and #1.
How long have you been visiting

Ah ok sorry, I mistook (sp?) you for a troll ;)
You're probably right about you being too considered too small/unimportant. As a fellow small country citizen, I feel your pain...
I'd like you to say that to the All Blacks (for the non-rugby playing "savages", they're the New Zealand national rugby team ;)
Seriously, why is NZ a savage country? Peter Jackson is a savage?
has also picked this up, with quite a few interesting links to add
And my country would be...? ;)

Well, OK. Try these instead. It's not like this is a BBC VS Australia thing...
I never said you had to do anything about it, I was merely pointing out that Australia was not a country of wonderful ethics as the parent said.
I don't have a grudge against Australia or anything, just saw this guy getting rated informative for something which is at least debateable.
This would be the same Australia that sold refugees?
Doesn't exactly sound like nice ethics to me... The continuing suppression of Aboriginals is also far from nice...
Nice comment, although I don't understand the gAIM thing... ;)

What, they don't have AOL where you're from? ^_^

You just made it :P
Ha Ha. What? Maybe things like this are covered by _international_ law, like the Geneva Convention and such...
