Maybe, but if you had read the article, you would have realized that this doesnt fix everything.

One of his primary ways of buidling "fake" feedback was to sell items to another of his IDs. Thus, he could build seller feedback easily and illegitimately, without having to actually sell the first thing.

  3. Solutions to the problems... on Universities Mull Official Role In Music Distribution · · Score: 1

Now this is a good idea.

Many people, especially of the college age, have come to the point that paying for music is an almost unheard of notion. An idea like this would go a long way towards remedying that--basically, those kids (myself included) are likely going to continue downloading music regardless of the legality. I would wholeheartedly support this idea.

The article mentions several problems that keep this from coming to fruition. The first is licensing. A system like this would have no way of supporting each artist--a specific, flat amount would go to the licensing service. It should be a relatively easy task, however, to gather statistics on what songs are downloaded how many times--from that, reward those artists X% of the flat fee. The second problem that they raise is one of cost--tuition costs have risen greatly recently, far outpacing inflation, and many students (or their parents) are not going to want to pay for a system they may or may not use. Fine. Don't. Don't make it a compulsory part of tuition. Sort of like schools send out flyers allowing student to purchase sheets or rugs that they know fit the beds or rooms, let the student decide if he wants to tack that extra money on his tuition bill.

I really think an idea like this could go a long way towards bringing a solution to the filesharing problems.

  4. Re:federal vs. state. on Anti-Patriot Act Movement Expands · · Score: 2, Insightful

The difference between acts such as Lincoln's and those that have occurred recently is that our current state has no defined "end". When Lincoln did these things, it was wartime, a war with a definite end--when the war was over, the understanding was that these rights would be returned. Our current state does not have a specific end date, no enemy to defeat, no war to win. Thats what makes this time so scary.

  7. Thats not true--Many bands stay in the bar circuit on A Music Industry Case Study · · Score: 1

Many bands stay in the bar circuit indefinitely. They arent all out looking for record deals.

It does, however, depend on the music you are referring to. For much rock music, this may be the case. But this is not the case for many other types of music, especially blues and jazz. There are several blues bands (and quite good ones at that) that have played at the local blues bar for twenty years. And you would be surprised how easy it is to like blues--after all, its what rock came from: rock borrows its scales and chord progressions from blues.

In addition, the escape hatch and pole only works if the shuttle is in its normal flight. If it is at an unexpected angle, it likely will not work.

Plus, they get to pick exactly what parts they want, not whatever the company decides to put in there.

There is the issue of a warantee, being able to send it back if it blows up... But is this worth the extra $1500-$2000? Absolutely not. You could build an entirely new system for that price.

Hit me the other day. Just noticed it last night, and I (think) I have it under control.

First, look out for small downloads, specifically anything with names such as "installer" or "downloader." I dont know how I got mine, but my brother's machine got hit after he tried to d/l the newest version of Britannica. Serves him right. When I went to see what he downloaded, I saw that it was a file around 700k.

Yes, it does spread over Kazaa lite.

Once it is installed, it proceeds to fill up your machine with approximately 700k files, usually in windows or winnt/temp/sys32. Thats where all mine were (Im running W2K).

However, dont go crazy yet. I downloaded the newest virus update for NAV (dated 5/17) and ran it. It picked all the downloads right up. Since they were all junk files that it had downloaded, I had it delete them all.

So far, so good. Havent had any recurrence since then (although this was last night, so I dont consider it enough time to truly test). Hopefully it really is this easy to clean up, but Im sure I will quickly find out.

    Hope this helps.
