Well does "Mom" reinstall windows? Is she going to upgrade to XP from ME or whatever? Are you saying that a reasonably intelegent human can look at windows and start using it but KDE or GNOME will be impossible without extensive education? I contend that if "Mom" has worked in Windows she won't have that much trouble working in XWindows but installing or reinstalling is a different animal all together.

Not to put to fine a point on this, but you state NAPSTER HAS NOT BOOSTED MUSIC SALES! I have been involved in retail sales for years, every company I've worked for has analysis tools for days to determine what causes people to buy and I have never heard it put better than the fellow who said of the restraunt who's sales slumped "They must be eating somewhere else." That said the fact the RIAA doesn't like all this downloading doesn't prove that easy access to downloaded music hasn't helped CD sales, to be fair it doesn't prove the oposite either. Nor is the fact the industry is struggling proof one way or the other. AFAIK it is still not possible to download a CD from the internet, and while MP3s have remarkable quality for such a small file, it is not the same, not even really close fidelity wise. This may seem like bunk to you but many people want to know that the CD they are about to spend 20+$ on has more than 2min 30sec of music they will want to hear twice. Last but not least I think the blank media sales may have something to do with every major record chain (ie Virgin, Tower, Wherehouse) changing policy to say if it's opened no return, even more than everyone making thier own CDs from all that music they downloaded for free.

Every freakin idiot says "Linux is too hard, nongeeks can't use it." If a computer comes with Windows then probably the nongeek is going to use Windows. If a computer comes with Linux that same nongeek is going to use that. If that nongeek needs different software or to do something they never did before they will call a geek friend(I know this I am that geek friend). If there is something easy about Windows please let me know I've supported it for 5+ years and between drivers that don't drive, BSODs, etc. I find it a most difficult and tempermental OS, and that goes for the 9x as well as the New Technology(NT). For the freakin idiots, please find a new line of FUD, thanks.
