  2. Escrow and Companies.. on Who Owns Source Code When a Company Folds? · · Score: 1

Many companies, including where I work have the source code put into an escrow account, and if the company folds we will have access to the code. And the code is not released to anyone but other customers who have also paid for this right. So there are other issues besides the lawyers - its the lawyers and the lawyers of customers

  3. Something to Jump Start - then following through on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1

I found myself far out of shape - and decided one morning that I needed to start again. The first thing I did was pick up a book called "8 Minutes in the Morning" - Basically it was a book that stated if you can spend 8 minutes a day - in the AM you could start to get back in shape - Once I compelted teh 30 day program - I moved to the mensfitness Iron Man workout (now on phase 6 of 10) I went from 200 down to 175 - the goal is 165, but body fat of 37% to 26% which is key. Both needed exercise and diet. The 8 minutes was a good jump start. My morning workout is now more like 1/2hr -45 minutes, my diet is going to get better. Those who diet only or exercise only seem to miss the other in the long run. Muscle mass allows the base calories to go up, and dieting allows for you to be able to work out to build the muscle mass. Last thing - I have though I learned this in the past, but I did seem to forget. Good health and getting into shape is a lifetime committment, there is no 1 month or even 1 year fix. You can cheat for a day - you can miss exercising for a few days on vacation. But to stay in shape you need to commit youself to it.

  4. What If???? on Should Open Source Content Management Interoperate? · · Score: 2, Interesting

What if a large corporation sponsored it? Whould that change people perception? light a fire under some people? Also give some perspective to what is needed in a true enterprise content management system?

What is multiple large companies, possibly including one or two current commercial content mgt systems were involved? Would this be the golden egg that gets people to interop?

I think this is desperately needed and I bet if approached properly you may get buy in from some companies who are looking to jump on the Open source bandwagon.

  5. Not feel like Buying Bon Jovi Music on Bon Jovi Tries New Approach To Fight Piracy · · Score: 1

Think about it, they have been one of the best selling bands in the past 15 years. So those who said "I don't feel like buying Bon Jovi" or "I never bought a Bon Jovi" album may be in the minority. How many people drove in their cars and cranked the radio any time Living with a Prayer came on.

I do happen to be one of the few who will admit I do like them and will buy the next album. In fact their music has gotten better with age. I also will most likely see them in concert. So they are not the beatles, nor do they have Alan Parsons engineering them (he did both abbey road and dark side of the moon) but they never claimed to be. They are 4 1/2 (Huey is the 1/2) guys from NJ who put on a great live show (if you have not seen them you are missing something) They may not be Queen live, but they are maybe the best out there now. They tour often, and for as long as people will got see them live.

IMHO they are sticking their necks out, they know after the success of the last album that they could be easily forgotten, and they have started the publicity show in motion (NFL, live shows around the world) There are very few bands who know how to promote like they do (The Stone, Aerosmith and Kiss who I think do it better) But if they don't get people to sign up, or buy the album, other bands that are starting out may have no chance. Also they may become the laughing stock that most people say they are. As record companies are getting pushed by artists for better deals, they are going to be less likely to take chances on smaller bands.

I could ramble on, but I think I have done enough damange to my rep.

  7. Since I no longer have napster on Sharing Increases Music Purchases? · · Score: 1

My Purchases have dropped. I used to find some good stuff, if more than one track was good i bought the CD. Right now I kinda sit around waiting for a decent CD, and since my radio listening is down to 2 hours a day it reduces the new music I could possibly find. Add to the face OandA take up the afternoon drive, that reduces music listening to one hour. And make that 1/2 hour with commercials and dj chatter. So you can see, no way to find new music, hence no new purchases

  9. What is missing from his article.. on Money in the Music Business · · Score: 1

First record companies no longer "develop" talent. They do not go around, put people together, teach them to play, tell them what to wear how to dance etc. (Well for these made up boy bands yes...) For most bands it starts out with guys who love music, start playing, find friends who love it and play with them. They then work as whatever so they could afford to go out and play on weekends for $100 a member. This often means singing at weddings, bar-mitzvahs etc.

Once they make enough money and start playing some gigs (in jersey to make it you used to play the arrow lounge, move up to fastlane ii and lastly the stone pony) The band then would make tapes/cd's themselves and sell it at each gig, including the weddings. Eventually they work with some small local mom and pop record company (or start their own) to make a bigger pressing. if the band gets lucky and gets some airplay on a local radio station (in the 80's it was WAPP, now its more like DHA) The band once rules the local area, they try to expand by playing gigs outside their local area. Playing and playing and playing..

Record companies find and take the only the bands that are "profitable" themselves and either press one of their current albums, or take one of their highly paid producers combine it with a pop songwriter (you really think ricky martin wrote his own tunes it was desmond child, oh he wrote bon jovi, cinderella's tunes etc..) and produce a new album (oh from that article its the songwriter and publisher make some of the bucks.. get it ) The album is usually recorded in the companies studios at a "reasonbale" rate per hour.
Lastly no one gets paid until the record company recoups its expenses which we all know are up on the good/good.

So basically that article accurate as it is, also has some "missing" pieces. Knowingly there are record companies trying to produce the next "nsync" etc, but most of the bands are still internally grown.

Hope that puts the rest of the pieces from that article..

  11. Re:Secure, maybe... target, HELL YA! on Slashback: Snapshots, Amends, Bazaarity · · Score: 1

Microsoft is a victum of their own success. If someone were to create a virus for BeOS, it would be very hard to get noticed as the number of users are few. Writing for what is on 99 percent of the desktops is more "rewarding" for a virus author.

But one other problem might be how tightly microsoft ties its application to the OS and IE. If a virus attacks IE, and IE is required on servers that are running IIS, then it is a possibility of security hole.

  13. Keeping up with Patches is Hard in a Corp Evironme on Gartner Group Suggests Dumping IIS For Now · · Score: 1

The issue I have is that we have many applications running on IIS/COM and everytime MSFT adds a new patch, then we have to retest every application. Assuming a 4-6 week testing/release cycle, I cound employ people permanently just releasing patches. The question is would it be different on any other environment (LAMP, SUN). Would the cost of converting all applications be worth it?

Say, 1/2 of the applications running on IIS/ASP be converted, will we suffer from the "toilet seat" theory. (For those who do no know what that is, it states, if you invent something invent the best toilet seat thus you can sell it to everyone since everyone has at least one toilet - yes there is a mercedes corollary) If LAMP becomes popular, and because of its open source nature, would people then attach it?

These are the questions I am supposed to give an answer to my managers by tommorrow morning, so the timing of this article and couldn't be anymore relevant.
