Sun is so out of touch. If I was going to do what they advocate I sure as hell wouldn't use UNIX or Windows. I'd use an iSeries. At least decent business apps are available and you don't have to try to figure out the vendors nameing strategy. What's iPlanet called now? It's no wonder Microsoft kicked their ass in SMB and Linux is stealing a lot of their existing business.
"Linux has failed to catch on among ordinary users because PC manufacturers have been prevented from offering dual-boot systems"
ROTFL. Maybe it sucks as an end user system.
"The irony is that Linux has never been more user friendly"
It surely could not become less user friendly could it. I mean when your at rock bottom, you can only go up.
"The book assumes that the user has a machine with Linux already installed and successfully configured. "
Why does it assume this. Is it because this is too large of a step for users to accomplish. I think so.
"Surprisingly, the book contains almost nothing about printing or how to install or upgrade applications. Because the book is intended for a newbie user, not a sys admin, it recommends talking to your network administrator about that. Cop out? Perhaps"
Who the fuck would buy a OS that requires you have an admin to set up printing.
Dipshit, the computer your get the file becomes the server, you become the client. Then if they get a file from you, you become the server they become the client. Peer to peer is interchangeable file server.
We quit trying to come up with a cosmic looking workspace with no functionality for the typical office worker and make something that allows the average worker to communicate better and enter more data. Even being able to format email is a waste of time.
hmm.. Arial, or CG Omega, which conveys my message best? Or should that word be bold. Shit like this drives productivity down the toilet. Simplify applications. By the way that is what I liked about Macs OS 7 - 8, can't speak to anything later. They let you do your work. They didn't bombard you with 38 fuckin ways to complete a task, so you had to think which would be better.
Christ, I want greenscreens and and less point and click.
"2. Whoever is writing these worms knows how much damage they're doing to open source. It would have been preferrable to inform the OpenSSL people first, wait a month, then release the worm."
You hypocrite. When people released and wanted to release Windows flaws without giving MS any time to develop a patch, Open source voices said that it was good and it would help show how much slower proprietary closed source companies were to patch vulnerabilities. Now that the shoe is on the other foot...
Damage to open source... The worms are showing how insecure it is too. There is no perfect operating system.
Charge the big "evil" corporation the as much as you can. The general consensus on this forum is that companies are evil. So why not gouge them and donate to your favorite linux charity, I mean distribution?
That is probably the question the typical computer user would ask when there quicker easier installing linux system booted for the first time.
The next question would be can't I just use windows.
An article about installing? It equates to what? Certainly not using the product. The install is like the first cut with the scalpel in surgery, knowing the next step is more important.
I am sick of peer to peer file sharing utilities. Business tried peer to peer in the early 90's it sucked, what makes people think it is the next big thing for home users. Nothing like users dropping viruses on one another's hard drives.
What is so fucking hard about going out and paying for a cd?
I guess this is the right formum for this kind of article as typical./ inhabitants: 1. Love free software (free as in I am too fucking cheap to pay for it.) 2. Love free music (see as in number 1) 3. Know record companies and any company charging money for a product is evil.
"Linux has DEFEATED microsoft in its tracks on server, mostly thanks to java"
Thank you very much proprietary language from Sun! Really speaks of the merits of Linux doesn't it? I think not I think it says a lot of shops like lower cost *nix. Sun is not dumb, they have honest to goodnes 64 bit hardware, not some urban legend called Itanium.
Swithching is an awsome idea, until you actually give the workstation to Joe Schmoe employee.
Companies will pony up.
Plus you need a very skilled helpdesk - well I guess that would be good, then a lot of/.ers could get a job.
Reminds me of my favorite joke: What's the difference between a large pizza and an open source programmer.
Answer: The large pizza can feed a family of four.
LaM: Are KDE & Gnome the wm of the future? R: Kind of but Linux on the desktop is dead. Microsoft won
LaM: Where do you see improvements for the Linux desktop? R: Linux on the desktop is dead.
If I was R: I would have finally started screaming "it's dead, it's dead, get it through your fucking head."
Like it or not MS will use the 95 percent desktop base it has to pus Windows on the back end. Some of the neat things on the desktop won't be possible without there products in the server room. When companies have employees already trained on Windows, using Windows at home, they are going to leverage that.
Now please, give up on Linux on the desktop for the masses. It is already there for most/.ers. But they are not the masses. The guy writing about Linux for Technophobes at least has a clue about the capability and the average user. The average user is as scared of computing as the average/.er is of dating, and any interaction with other humans not involving a keyboard.
Oh, I get it! It's a profit deal.

"It's not hard to improve faster when you've got soooo much further to go is it? :-)"
So if I'm climbing Mt Everest and you Stone Mt in Georgia.... I move faster because I have further to go.
Ok. Now I'm gonna make you cry. A train leaves Pittsburgh traveling West...

When will the zealots realize they worship shit?
PARC|Mac|Windows to correct someone about the history of the gui. Someone will throw in BeOs somewhere too no doubt.
For me I think CDE is the culmination of all that is good on the desktop.
Linux as a user friendly OS that conquers the desktop and brings MicroSoft to its knees. I've been hearing about that for the last two years.
Dipshit, the computer your get the file becomes the server, you become the client. Then if they get a file from you, you become the server they become the client. Peer to peer is interchangeable file server.
MYOB is great accounting software and runs on Windows or Mac
http://www.myob.com/us/
Oh, and you forgot. If they actually make money, the OSS community will disown them.
Linux is Nothing Until Xrossover
Cause then they can run windows apps baby.
It's all about apps!
by rimba!
Why aren't they considering open office? Not ready yet, what?
Microsoft's largest competition is themselves pricing their products too high. If they lose it will be at their own hands, nothing OS will ever do.
to hacked by Chinese.

I meant compared to the crufty ass fonts of linux. OSX is very nice.
Likely MS will get it considered a "standard" because of the large desktop market share.
Microsoft is going to beat companies and individuals about the head because 95 % of users rely on their desktop. Plus they got all the good fonts.

Yes the wonderful ACLU. Same folks who insure that we only have to go the library or schools to surf porn.
shh... you dumbass. Don't let them know how to beat us.
