    I get a sneaking feeling you're right about this. The scary part is that as soon as people see the price of Intel Mac workstations they're gonna freak - look what happened to SGi's Intel machines - sunk without a trace because everyone thought they could get the same performance for 40% less from anyone else (SGi's machines were actually very nice).

    I might buy myself another (cheap) iBook, and one last PowerMac G5 for work, but I suspect that'll be the end.

    Absolutely right.

    All my friends had Amigas and we swapped games, demos and the like but Russell also had a Mac and a brand new VGA PC (it was an Amstrad) even the Amiga's excellent gfx looked lame and interlace-nasty next to 16.7M colours of progressive scan VGA glory.

    When I got MY first (Super)VGA PC with it's Orchid ProDesigner gfx card and played Flashback on it for the first time, I knew the Amiga had to improve quickly or die.

    It died. It was still a better games machine than anything else pretty much until the Playstation bomb hit.

    How can you state that the 1.6Ghz Pentium M is more clock efficient and then postulate that the 1.5Ghz G4 is faster?

    If you knew ANYTHING about this you'd know that the MPC74xx series CPUs are totally hamstrung by their crappy MPX memory bus.

    My G5's got a pair of striped SATA disks as well as its SCSI array.

    PCI-X?

    I've got TWO PCI-X cards in my G5 right now.

    Let;'s hope we KEEP these features when transitioning to Intel.

    Depends how well you burn it, but the general idea is that the growing of the corn/sugar cane/whatever uses as much CO2 as is produced in the fermentation and burning processes.

    Your use of the word "insane" there makes very little sense.

    I have an M-Audio Delta Audiophile 24/96 fitted to my home Mac, but only because there was no SPDIF output available without - my external DA converter is from Audio Alchemy and performs well.

    I have bo idea what this article is all about - my G5 2.5Ghz already boots in WAY less than 10seconds, and mine is a video workstation crammed with apps and kexts and with 4GB of RAM to test, not that I find the boot times on our 2.8Ghz P4s running XP particularly burdensome either.

    We pretty much only boot for system updates anyway!

    I can't speak for the simulators, but media apps are running on G5s, P4s and Xeons as always. We used AMD CPUs until our apps broke and the developers told us they never tested on AMD...

    No CPU competition hurts us all.

    I have a DVD-A. If I could access the high quality audio on the disc I might be able to enjoy the music better. Who knows? I might buy MORE DISCS if I can use the audio data as I desire.

    actually, 23kmph is quite within the range if an Earth orbiting satellites speed - so we could do just this if so inclined. Come to think of it, the USA probably already has a few orbiting lumps of depleted uranium for just this purpose.
