Threat of China to the rest of the world? Much as all is wrong with the Chinese regime, the real danger to the world at the moment is the good old US of A. How many military actions has China been involved in in the past 50 years? How many has the US been involved in? How many countries has China invaded? How about the US? How many countries has the US threatened in the past 5 years? Mod me as a troll or flamebait if you must, but at least think about what I have said.
In the Napster case you had some fairly significant differences:
There were no agreements allowing RIAA copyrighted music to be transfered over Napster
All the traffic at one time or another went through Napsters central servers
You could safely say that all traffic of copyrighted materials whoes owners had not given permission on Napster was unlawful
However, in this case you have other differences:
There are now agreements allowing copyrighted material to be downloaded from certain digital music stores (iTunesMS)
You can rip from DVD or CD
The items in question are residing on a persons PC, they are not in transit anywhere
There is no third party involved
So, you end up with a situation where you can identify the files, but you cant determine whether they are illegal or not. In Napsters case, it was quite easy - if it was being transfered over or on the Napster network, it was there unlawfully.
How is this different to the same hacker turning off Automatic Update? Same outcome..... Or installing their own version of WindowsUpdate that just says 'Alls fine'?
You got it the wrong way around, they ARE compatable with the GPL, but the GPL isnt compatable with them (IE you can take BSDLed code and use it in a GPL codebase, but you cant take GPLed code and use it in a BSDL codebase).
By that measure, IBM are also criminals, yet a lot of people on this forum seem to hold them up as bastions of all that is good. MS was found guilty of abusing its manopoly, but this case was just money grabbing on the part of the EU (and I live in the EU) - an OS is expected to be able to do certain things out of the box, and I have no issues with MS bundling MediaPlayer to fulfil those expectations.
But then, what do I care anymore, I just moved to the Mac.
For the record, I purchased a new iBook at the start of December 2004, non Superdrive, and received all of the software on that list apart from Quicken. Apple have shipped iDVD with non superdrive systems before.
Wikipedia doesnt disagree with me at all (taken from your link):
Captain Jacob Veldhuyzen van Zanten, impatient because the flight had been delayed for hours and thinking that they had permission to take off, applied full power. While the KLM had started its take-off run, the concerned PanAm crew repeated that they were "still taxiing down the runway". On hearing this, the flight engineer expressed his concern about the PanAm not being clear of the runway, but it was overruled by the captain. The flight engineer apparently hesitated to further challenge van Zanten, possibly because he was not only senior in rank but also one of the most able and experienced pilots of the company.
Final conclusion found that Jacob Van Zanten was solely responsible for the accident. The fundamental factors in the development of the accident were that van Zanten:
1) Took off without being cleared to do so.
2) Did not heed the ATC controller's instruction to stand by for take off.
3) Did not abandon take off when he knew the Pan Am aircraft was still taxiing.
Something rarely mentioned is that the Pan Am 747 involved wasnt just ANY 747, it was the Clipper Victory - the first commercially delivered 747.
There was no misunderstanding between the ATC and the aircraft on the runway at the time. Non at all. There was some communications difficulties, but these were minor and would not have caused the crash. So, what did happen? The KLM Captain got impatient, thats what happened. He had been told the PanAm 747 was taxiing down the runway toward him, and he would be told when the runway was clear for him. Several times he started spooling up the engines, and several times the junior flight officer stopped him from beginning the roll, reminding him that they didnt have clearance. The KLM Captain was KLMs top pilot at the time, but after a divert and stressful manouevers in thick fog, he just become impatient. The final time, he won the arguement with the junior flight officer, who basically had to defer to the most senior pilot in KLM in the end. They started their take off, and struck the PanAm 747 midway down the runway.
KLM didnt believe that such an incident could happen, and called for their most senior pilot to take part in the investigation - who happened to be the pilot incharge of the KLM aircraft.... Basically, people died because the flightcrew were stressed, because the senior pilot bullied the junior pilot into accepting his decision, and because there was no clear method for the junior pilot to overrule the senior pilot on such decisions.
They are part of the Government, but in this case it wouldnt be the Government interfering with freedom of expression, as the courts are being asked to adjudicate independantly in a civil case between two individuals (for suitably large values of individual), if this was a criminal matter I might have a different view.
Not being an American, someone may correct me on this, but doesnt the First Amendment only pertain to limitations on freedom and religious expression from the Government and not private companies?
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference.
No, the PREVIOUS LIVEJOURNAL OWNERS knew about the faulty motherboards, and didnt do anything to fix them. I doubt the new owners had been told about it until the outage.
WotC or Tops dont have any power over the cards once they are sold, Blizzard has powers after the fact and because of this they may become liable or suffer bad press because of a fraudulant sale. Thats the difference.
Some of the internals on the Rebel (300D) are different as well, it isnt just hte construction. For example the Rebel has a penta mirror instead of a glass pentaprism like the D60 (the model up you are talking about), and the D60 has a much larger image buffer allowing for quicker shots. There ARE differences between the models, it isnt simply a case of the firmware being the difference (I have also heard of horror stories with updating the 300D to the D60s firmware - it isnt 100% compat). Dammit, I HAVE learnt something from sitting between two Photography buffs (one has a 300D to play with, the other has a 20D after upgrading from a D60 - he does track days etc).
The company I work for recently retired Windows98. Does this mean we have a bunch of PCs sitting around with no OS on? No, we upgraded to newer operating systems. Retiring doesnt mean they dont have a current system inplace and doing the job Carnivore did.
SkyOne always do that tho (they did it with Hex 'watch the series finale next week' - and then announc ed a new season of it 'in the new year'), it all depends on whos doing the voice over and what specifically the producers call it (some call it a season, some really do call it a series). I fully expect BSG to continue on for a couple of seasons/series yet. Theres been NOTHING said about a cancellation of BSG yet.
And the GUI shines when several NONSIMILIAR files need to be manipulated at the same time, eg "That jpeg file, that jpeg file, that gif file, that pdf all need deleting from a directory full of similiar files". Its faster to ctrl-click each and delete them as one batch in, say, Explorer, than it would be on the command line.
Actually very few of the 139 are discounted, nearly all were purchased at the initial list price of $275million. That does not include options for further aircraft.
A A380-800 carrying 550 passengers costs $270million.
A 747-400 carrying 436 passangers costs $215million.
Both work out at roughly $0.5million per passenger.
The Airbus requires the same length runway to takeoff and land, but it requires wider runways. Most airports can take the A380 currently, with only some having to expand runways or taxiways to fit.
The 747-400 has a range of 14,205km, with a max fuel capacity of 63,700gallons.
The A380-800 has a range of 15,100km, with a max fuel capacity of 81,900gallons.
That gives the 747-400 a rate of 0.2km/g.
And the A380 a rate of 0.18km/g.
Or, based on passenger numbers, the 747-400 has a rate of 1.02 gallons of fuel per 100km per passenger. The A380 has a rate of 0.9 gallons of fuel per 100km per passenger. (work all that out myself, phew). This gives the Airbus a more efficient fuel cost when carrying a full passenger load.
The A380 will be used mainly on the longhaul hub routes, such as LA to Hongkong, London to Hongkong, London to Sydney, London to New York, New York to Hongkong etc. You will see it on other routes tho, its just as good for those.
So far Airbus have sold 139 A380-800 aircraft, half of what it needs to break even.
Ant writes "According to MacSlash's story, a recent post on OpenOffice.org said no MacOS X work has been done since 2003 and that there are no longer any plans for an Aqua version 'due to various licensing, political, and fundamental engineering difficulties'.:("
It says nothing of the kind. From the link:
Due to various licensing, political, and fundamental engineering difficulties it is likely, for the near future, that native Aqua porting work will be based off of the NeoOffice.org project and not under the direct aegis of OpenOffice.org.
and
For the last year and a half all engineering work focusing on a native Mac OS X OpenOffice.org version has been concentrated in the NeoOffice/J project, using a combination of Java and Carbon technologies to replace X11.
What it looks like is that they have recognised that NEOoffice is a valid port, and any Aqua port by themselves would be a duplication of effort. The Slashdot story blurb makes it sound like they just gave up because it was too hard. They call this journalism now?
This has nothing to do with 'destroying independant distribution methods', and it has nothing to do with preventing artists from independantly distributing their own work. Bear in mind that most of the artists under the RIAA do not own their own work, they quite willingly signed those rights away for money. Very few actors own the rights to their own films, again for the same reason. Independant artists can still distribute their own work in any manner they want.
As someone else has pointed out, a lot of people speed. Should we get rid of speeding offences? A lot of people think breaking into peoples homes is fair game (Im not making the theft comparison), should we amend those laws to allow it? A lot of people think gays shouldnt be allowed in the armed forces, should we amend laws to disallow them? There are a lot of laws that a lot of people break, it doesnt mean the laws should be changed.
Considering in this case the MPAA isnt a vigilante, they work within the bounds of the law, I think theres no difference at all, and there are no vague property claims, there are valid property claims. If you deliberately make yourself look guilty regardless of actual guilt, then it should come as no surprise when you are approached because of it. Yet this is what these people are attempting to do, create an uproar because of it.

Is it ethically correct that two completely unrelated and different products have no price correlation? I shall leave you to decide the answer.
