"What you fail to realize is that there's no information in the entire church which can be presented in an orderly, intelligent manner. They're claiming that we humans are Gods and that a cosmic warlord has fooled us all into thinking we're not. But we have a science fiction writer (Hubbard) to the rescue, as he's recently discovered the truth and is battling the evil warlord from his plush multi-million dollar mansion, while his followers learn to use their mystical powers.
If you could, please show me how that can be presented in an orderly, intelligent manner. I would suggest a comic book for guidance, but I don't think you'll be able to make it work."
You just proved my point =)
Whether they CAN or CANNOT do as I suggested is their problem. And if they can't, well then that can be considered as proof that they are all smoke and mirrors.
How about "freedom to obtain all information desired"?
From the article: The church sent a complaint to Google last month, saying that its search results for "Scientology" included links to copyrighted church material that appears on a Web site critical of the church."
So what? are your church's morals and standards so shakey that you cannot take some criticism? Get used to it. you are a public orginization, not everyone is going to like you.
to me this sounds like they (The Church of Scientology) wants uninformed zombies who will never question them instead of informed intelligent people.
I admit that I do not know much about either The CoS OR Operation Clambake. Frankly, neither of them interests me all that much.
I do, however, believe in freedom of information. the owners and operators of "Operation Clambake" have just as much right to present their beliefs and information to the public as does the Church of Scientology. Just the same, the people that want information about The Church will probably want to see both pro and opposing veiwpoints.
I think if they want to get people's cooperation, then they should refute Operation Clambake's information in an orderly and intelligent manner. attempting to completely strike out an opposing veiwpoint in this manner to me just smacks of censorship and fascism. Two things i'm sure most people are against.
The site for the KAZAA without adware/spyware is chock full of pop-ups for "free cellphones" and the like.

Here's a hint for you:

And just so i'm not accused of being offtopic (grin), ages back when I first learned about Kazaa/Morpheus, I completely distrusted the validity of the BDE B3D projector software.
It installed itself completely seperate from (and silently) the main program. Yet after removing it (seperately, with it's OWN Uninstaller) Kazaa/Morpheus whined that a "required" component was removed, and it refused to run.
**COUGH** Yea ok.... where's that Uninstaller hm? Time to gut the registry again and seek out rogue DLL's.
Required my butt... and Kazaalite proves it.
Now someone just needs to write a plug-in for it that will automatically pingflood any one client that tries to download 10 files off you at once! =)
(Yes, i'm fully aware that you can configure the max number of DL's, the above is meant to be funny!)
"If you still pay $50 for a silly plastic disc and some paper, you're a sucker."
It's because of this (very wrong) mindset that piracy is so rampant.
You aren't paying that much for a "silly plastic disc and some paper", you are paying for the man hours and labor of some dozens of people, all working together for year long stints or more to create graphics, models, artwork, scripting, a storyline and then put it all together into a coherent package so that you can sit down, play and enjoy the game for some 10-50 hrs (depending on the game genere.)
If you really think this, then you simply have NO freaking clue what is involved in the production of a modern video game, which today, rivals the scale and budgets of major motion pictures, of which "only" provide you with 2 or so hrs of non-interactive entertainment.
My personal domain (not being listed because it's being hosted on a server that i'm not paying for cos the SA's are too damn dumb to realize my account is still there and active), is up for registration next month (registered thru Netsol), and for the past 2 months, i've been getting loads of "Renewal" notices from every registrar under the sun.
If it wasn't for the fact that I KNOW who my registrar is, i'd find it easy to get confused.
However, i've found that MANY people/companies tend to be extremely ignorant of the domain registration process, and their general domain setup/Web hosting accounts.
MANY tend to forget/Not understand how to re-register their domains. Then they go screaming at their webhost when the domain becomes unavaliable because the registration expired.
I couldn't even tell you how many calls like that i've taken working as a TS Rep for Verio/Best Internet. These people would let their domain registration lapse, then call up screaming and demanding that I get their domain back up right away.
General call would go like this:
"I can't get my e-mail! it says "host not found"! why have you taken my domain down again? If i can't get my e-mail i'm going to lose thousands of dollars and sue your company!"
"Well ma'am, it appears as thought your domain's registration has lapsed. You will need to send payment to your registrar and pay the re-registration fee"
"Didn't you just hear me?! I don't CARE about the web site, I need to get my e-mail!"
I worked for Verio As a TS Rep for about 1 yr as a Telephone rep for both the Shared Web Hosting platform, but Primarily to support the FreeBSD Based Best Internet Communications Shell server platform.
Best was a fairly large ISP/Web Host that conducted business in the bay area before Verio Bought them out.
The Best SMTP was listed on both MAPS and ORBS as an "open relay" (it wasn't open, but there was an exploit loophole that couldn't be closed, for reasons that would take too long to explain here.). the Best SA worked with MAPS to take care of that issue, but ORBS, as everyone probably knows, is full of self righteous crackheads that wouldn't even return the SA's calls
Verio didn't give a flying crap about that either. As far as it was concerned, the Best Inc server farm was a bastard child that it didn't pay attention to, and just wanted it to go away for good (they closed the doors early this year, anyone wanting to maintain a shell account had to move to the massively overpriced iserver service.
In so far as internal support went, it was unheard of. If a customer didn't complain, then a problem didn't exist. But the second some outside force opened it's yap, the President's office would jump to attention and start cracking the whips.
Let's be realistic, this dude is running a private STMP, ok, he's got that right, but running it as an open relay is just stupid. Hell, it's his bandwidth bill right? He wants to be a tunnel for crap mail, let him foot the bill for it. a quick examination of the header will reveal him as the culprit.
Of course he could simply enable an SMTP auth requirement to restrict access to only the users of his choice....
No one is ever going to read this because it's buried so far down now, but here goes anyway:
JC makes himself VERY accessible to the community. Not only in his.plan updates (which are currently far and few between, probably to try and minimize hype for "DOOM3"), but he also regularly attends conventions and LAN parties, along with also giving workshops at them as well. And also appearing at keynote speaking events, then you have interveiws, written interviews, slashdot postings, not to mention the videos and blurbs on www.armadilloaerospace.com[armadilloaerospace.com] etc. etc. etc.
Celebrities give up a good measure of anominity and privacy, the same is true for the people that develop the games we play and lovel. I'd bet dimes on the dollar that JC (or any of the Id staff for that reason) probably can't go out to dinner without at least one person wanting to stop them to talk. It's alot of pressure to be under, so I wouldn't at all be surprised if he gets a little aggrivated now and then. Romero is known to be a very good natured, and accessible person, but do you think he doesn't get aggrivated at times and just wishes that people would leave him the heck alone? Of course he does, but him and JC are different people. They will react to different circumstances in different ways. Neither you, nor I have any qualification to say which is right or wrong until you walk the miles in their shoes
I've never met the man myself, but you've only met him once. Don't presume that can really sum him up by one short meeting in a crowded convention hall, where there is serious pressure to give attention to as many people as possible, which could be hundreds during events like that.
"I don't want to get locked into signing these all day"
Perhaps you failed to consider that maybe he simply didn't feel it would be fair to sign yours for you, and then ignore other people due to simple lack of time. It was very gracious of him to sign it for you, he would probably feel a bit guilty if he didn't sign something for everyone after that as a result.
TROLL MODE ON - in summary: Stop being a selfish and judgemental prick. You don't know anything about the guy.TROLL MODE OFF
sure a robots.txt will stop spiders that ~play by the rules~ from indexing, but it wouldn't do anything to stop the ones that DON'T play by the rules, and those are the ones that you really want to keep out.
I'm not a programmer, but to me, the fix to this seems simple. Exactly like others suggested, instead of trying to jury rig something to work around what the processor won't give you, go and find one that does. You'll be much better off in the long run.
Eh. I can sorta understand their reasonings at least.
I mean, people tend to seriously abuse their services, and then kvetch their hearts out when someone at their ISP notices and puts and end to it? Oh you poor dears. You can't do things that you really aren't supposed to be doing in the first place.
Even with the caps and limits in place, the services are usually ~still~ providing exactly what they promised in the first place, eventually people realize this and shut up.
So, they are limiting the old Napster ports, so what? Change the ports the program uses to something else then.
"Anyone else find it odd that MS will be supporting DOS, Win 3.x and NT 3.5 a month longer than 95? I mean, seriously. I can count the number of people I know that have win 3.x system on one hand."
probably because there are many proprietary software systems out there still in use today that are built on DOS.
people resist change big time, esp when they have their Front end and/or backend software custom built from the ground up on DOS.
Let's try blaming the stupid users that ~still~ continue to fricken open suspcious attachements.
So what if the virus uses the outlook address book to spread? it wouldn't have the ~chance~ to if moronic users would stop fricken opening attachements they don't know anything about!

Well, it wasn't ever any good as a computer, but imacs seemed to work great as a garbage can and fishtank, not to mention the dancing ibrators.
You ask me, I think an imac is really only good for catapault ammunition, but what do i know?
What became ST:TMP was originally intended to be the pilot for a new Star Trek Series: Star Trek: Phase II.
At that time, Paramount was working out all the details of starting up a Paramount television Station, and ST:Phase II was supposed to be the premiere launch vehicle for the new network.
Plans for the Paramount network were scrapped only a few weeks before ST:PhaseII was set to begin filming. They had it all going on, sets were built, costumes made, scripts were being written, i believe most, if not all, of the original cast were signed up for the new series too. When the plans for a new TV station were scrapped, PhaseII was also scrapped.
When paramount later called for a Star Trek motion picture, it was indeed in answer to Star Wars, but it wasn't because they feared Star Wars would become more popular, Rather, they were capitalizing on Star Wars' success.
it was sorta like "hey look how good Star Wars is doing. Don't we have a SciFi series with a rather large fan base we can use to tank on that success?"
they reworked the original PhaseII script into what became ST:TMP.
I dont know much more off the top of my head, but there is a book out with ~alot~ of information about what Phase II was going to be. From what I know, they had some seriously good ideas, but because the network was scrapped, so was Phase II as a result, and what could have possibly been the best Star Trek Show ever never came to be.
It wasn't all the surprising that when Paramount revived plans to start a TV network in the 90's that they went shopping for a Star Trek show to headline the new network, and hence, we ended up with Voyager.. but that's another discussion totally.
you'd at least expect the carrier to make a good faith effort to deliver your goods intact. I mean, if all they are going to do is destroy every piece of goods that gets into their hands, what good are they?
Your experiences are ~really~ going to depend on the route that your parcel has to take. International shipments go thru alot of hands, which leads to larger possibility of damage.
I've shipped many items cross country, which have arrived in pristine condition. I've also had other items shipped from relatively close by, only to see the packages mangled beyond recoginition.
About 1 yr ago, I built a new computer for my mother (this was when I lived in California). the packages were delivered from the mail order outlet to her in NY, then shipped to me in California VIA UPS. They all arrived in pristine condition.
After construction, the computer was packed in the original box the case was packed in (with extra crap on top.. a layer of Zip disks was on the top. UNPADDED), not a single zip disk was cracked in the return shipment.
And yes, my shipmet was insured for cost. But insurance should not be to assure that your shipment gets proper handling, it's supposed to be to cover catastrophic loss. Like accidental damage/destruction (auto or plane crash), or a lost parcel (i've never had this happen to me, but it's probably a sure bet that if a package is "lost", it was probably taken by someone).
I'd absolutely sue if I was you, and don't just sue for the cost of the items, sue for damages. You should go talk to a laywer and see what options you have available.

Then again, optonline cable is probably the best cable service avaliable. It's the best choice if you live on Long Island.
The only time you'll see me going back to pokey old 56K is during times of desperation, which never happens since my service is spectacular.
you make some damn good points, and bring some bad memories back to me.
My god, how many people have I watched (INCLUDING freaking support professionals) that cut and paste by "right click, click cut/copy, click, right click, click paste".
And i'd show them over and over again "hey look, ^x is cut ^c is copy, and ^v is paste, see how easy"
come back later, and they are STILL doing it in the annoying mouse method. Hell i know people that still use the edit menu for cut/copy/paste, and the frigging hotkey shortcut is written right there!
You ask me, I think it's a fear of learning. Like you said, it's what they know, and they are afraid of doing it any other way, regardless of how many times they are shown an easier/better/faster way. people like that simple don't know how to memorize, so they just do what they know.
shit people, write the shortcuts down on a stick it note, and stab it on the edge of your monitor till you remember it.
It took me about all of.02 seconds to figure out the change.
"oh, there's no Dial up settings folder here. Look, that one says "network and dial up settings",guess they combied the two into one cpl"
All they did was intergrate the dial up cpl applet with the Network cpl applet, and why shouldn't they? they are both the same thing really.
But that's what i'm saying. First time you'd seen it, and eventually you puzzled it out. Sure I know it's annoying, i was there once too:)
It's a "Hey, I don't know this, so lets try to find out, or ask someone that does" thing.
My problem is with the dills that curse and cry "this is too complicated, make it easy , waa, waa" (you think setting file associations is hard? try quantum mathmatics! heh. Hell I still don't fully get Calculus for cripes sake.
)
the guy is just way off base with his wild claim that MS is using the file associations as some sort of monopolistic practice by making it "hard" to use. it's really not.
piece of broiled shit that i've ever read.
I won't even waste my breath trying to rip this retarded article to shreds. It's not my fault that the average Joe Shmoe isn't smart enough to figure it out on their own, or ask someone that does. Check the file properties, open the file types tab in folder properties. use the "open with" choice on the alt menu to pick a new program to open the file with. Use the programs file associations tab in the properties panel.
That's 6 different ways to accomplish a file association change. What's the problem?
to make things even easier, programs ask you what file associations to use when installing, and a good amount of progams even actively check their file associations settings, and PROMPT you to correct them if they have been changed.
It's the users fault for not paying attention if the associations get changed. How many of us can honestly say that they actively do anything during an installer routine but look to see where the "next" button is.
I'll admit it. At one time, I didn't know how to change file associations either, but I had the capacity of mind to use the tools provided to me to find out how. It's not my problem, or MS's if Joe retard is too stupid to simply open the help system (hint, it's right on the start bar) and type "File associations" in order to get instructions on how to do what he wants.
If you could, please show me how that can be presented in an orderly, intelligent manner. I would suggest a comic book for guidance, but I don't think you'll be able to make it work."
You just proved my point =) Whether they CAN or CANNOT do as I suggested is their problem. And if they can't, well then that can be considered as proof that they are all smoke and mirrors.

I think a modern CPU would be just a TAD too fast for ye olden DOS games, many of whose performance was directly tied to the CPU's clock speed.
Ever try playing Bard's Tale on a 300Mhz Machine? all the monsters move like they are high on crack.
You'd have to use a program like Mo'Slo (no links, sorry) to temporarily slow down the CPU to play those old games at the proper speed.

It took me about all of .02 seconds to figure out the change.
"oh, there's no Dial up settings folder here. Look, that one says "network and dial up settings" ,guess they combied the two into one cpl"
All they did was intergrate the dial up cpl applet with the Network cpl applet, and why shouldn't they? they are both the same thing really.
But that's what i'm saying. First time you'd seen it, and eventually you puzzled it out. Sure I know it's annoying, i was there once too :)
It's a "Hey, I don't know this, so lets try to find out, or ask someone that does" thing.
My problem is with the dills that curse and cry "this is too complicated, make it easy , waa, waa" (you think setting file associations is hard? try quantum mathmatics! heh. Hell I still don't fully get Calculus for cripes sake.
)
the guy is just way off base with his wild claim that MS is using the file associations as some sort of monopolistic practice by making it "hard" to use. it's really not.
piece of broiled shit that i've ever read.
