    Um, the amd XP 2400 is way faster than intel 2.3ghz p4. And no powerpc machine will compete with even 1 AMD XP 2400. This would be funny, but so many people dont realize that Apple actually gets less performance than pcs per mhz, not more. About on-par with intel, maybe, but nowhere near AMD.

    Right, but most of the web also follows somewhat closely to "good code" Some of these sites are just so terrible, well, it's really really hard to say how it SHOULD be rendered. Remember, just because IE is the major browser doesn't mean it renders everything right, and with 5.5, 6.0, 5.0 all being different... not to mention mac it's impossible to tell.

    Not 200,000 bugs that are bugs. There are many, many duplicate bugs even though Mozilla asks people to look over the bugs and not duplicate. Also, many of these bugs are actually to get Mozilla to render a page "Correctly" when the page is written totally wrong, I.E. not W3.org valid, like slashdot.org, only worse. My guess is that about 1/3 of the bugs are really bugs, the rest are dups, features, or just dumb stuff.

    Just dive in dude... Redhat isn't bad to start with because you can understand what's wrong with it when you actually learn stuff later. OTOH, Slackware is the best I've tried, but if I had more bandwidth, I'd try A source based distro. (Gentoo... sourceror..)

    Yeah, but who desides if what you are saying is Racist?? Lots of polititions in the united states accuse others of being racist, just to get people turned against them, and often the person accusing is actually far more "racist". For example, Jesse Jackson is a very aggressive black racist, and he is always throwing fud at republicans, and just spreading totally untrue propaganda.

    And it IS cheaper... even if you don't have a pII sitting around, you can throw together a cheap athlon for $280, plus a dvd writer for $200, and you're around $500, add your programs... and you save $500, or more if they start charging monthly fees.

    Yeah, after they told you that IRQ's were obsolete, and dont really matter anymore :-) I've never run into a real problem with IRQs that I couldn't handle by changing bios settings, etc. But I'm not your average tech.

    You have a very good write... but about people with xts... The XT doesn't have anything similar to modern computers, so it's kinda worthless for experience. The only thing you'll gain there is confidence... and that's not ALWAYS good.

    As I posted above... They didn't open their codecs.. just the player. The codecs are binary-only, and it does sound like they will be for linux though. But hey, you get a free MP3 codec open source!! WOOHOO!!

    The only thing they have open source in this is MP3, and we've had that for quite a while with xmms. All the Realplayer stuff is closed source binary only. Sure, it's still a welcome release, just not too exciting.

    No, my premise wasn't really that severe, just stating that perhaps, donating your computer cycles may be better used somewhere else, contrary to the parent post. These research centers aren't terrible, and granted, some of them admit that a healthy diet is important. The problem is, many medical "cures" don't work either, i.e. you take pills, and you have to keep taking pills to stay "healthy". Then eventually they stop working, and you have to get more expensive pills.

    My registrar for just over a year, very nice, very cheap ($8.95/year).. they even parked it for 2 weeks and let me know the credit card on file was bad.
