That force fight between Yoda and Count Dooku in AOTC was Lucas's version of the wizards duel in LOTR, after he saw the duel he apparently decided he wanted to do the same thing with Lee in AOTC.
... there *must* be something in [it] for Microsoft for them to release the source of something
... Or maybe there is some ploy in here in order to make $$$ but it is so sneaky that we have not figured it out yet. As far as I am concerned, this seems to be some strategic move...
Or maybe that's just what they want you to think!!!
Is this anything like a certain other organization stating that everyone "ought to have" universal health care, without saying how, or who's going to pay for it, etc? This is a normal function of politicians, folks, nothing to see here.
Well a couple differences is that broadband, the internet in general infact, while highly useful isn't exactly a basic necessity. Health care on the otherhand, well we all have bodies and those generally need care at some point in you life, I'd say universal access to health care is in somewhat of a different league than being able to download faster. As well there are quite a few nations who have universal health care, none I know of who have universal broadband.
In general don't make bad analogies to push a political agenda, one is sometimes prohibitively expensive service that is often essential to human survival, the other allows faster access to an information medium.
Interestingly, www.magnatune.com reports their users DON'T pay the lowest prices they could choose (and Magnatune's what everyone SAYS they want because you can try before you buy, etc., so of course everyone's now busily-ignoring it!).
I really like Magnatunes too but for that statistic remember that Magnatunes is not only try before you buy, it's download a free MP3 before you buy. As a result this means that all payments are completely voluntary (ie they don't have to pay but do anyway) considering this it doesn't make a lot of sense that those customers would choose to pay the lowest price when they go to pay since they've already decided not to pay the real lowest price $0.
I've got to say, since Episode 1 and 2's massive failure in the eyes of many geeks, and most of the press (despite my love of both movies), the press surrounding the Clone Wars and the opinions I've heard have been tremendous, to say the least. IMO, the quality of animation is superb, Samurai Jack style, and it's just real Star Wars fun to watch. Also, one simply MUST love the new dark Jedi in the fight against all those monsters.
I have to say of the few episodes of Clone Wars I've seen I didn't think much of it. The animation I'm not really concerned about but I'm guessing they did it to save money rather tha any artistic reason. But my biggest problem with with the actual content. I wasn't excited by their action sequences, nor could I care about the characters or feel their emotion, in general I just couldn't find any of it mildly interesting. Perhaps you were able to get something out of them and I'm glad for it but for me it fealt like episodes 1&2 without the good action sequences and with somewhat worse writing. Maybe they improved later on and maybe some people do really enjoy them but from what I saw I wasn't impressed.
A slightly more cynical wording: It shows that the EU cannot be bought by a US company as easily as the US DOJ/presidency can.
You're right, you also need to mention the numerous massive fines the EU has given to European companies to show that the EU cannot be bought as easily as the US DOJ/presidency can.
(would give a link but I'm too lazy, just glance at the previous stories on this subject for pleanty of evidence)
I don't really want to jump in on the open source vs. microsoft security debate here but I think there are a couple important points here, first you're talking about a sample size of 1 here for MS on the contrary most open source security holes I hear about on/. are patched in less than 2 days as well (sometimes hours though those patches don't always work:). But more important this isn't really in the same categories as other security holes, most holes are with microsoft products and there they can drag their feet in releasing a patch because even when the a member of the public has their machine comprimized by a virus (which the patch usually predates) they don't associate microsoft with the problem. A problem with affecting hotmail however is a problem with a microsoft service and thus would be immediatly associated with microsoft and would recieve a much higher priority in being fixed. Not to say that open source is better just that this isn't a good example to cmopare the two.
I don't recall how windows stores data but many filesystems (including must unixes I believe) use page tables. Basically at the start of the hard disk there is a segment which stores the page tables for the files on the system. Each file gets its own page table which tells the system where all the different pieces of the file are on the hard drive. If the page tables get overwritten then there's nothing to tell you what bit of data belongs to what file and for any data recovery you pretty much have to rely on heuristics to guess what bits of file go together.
Why the hell do they need that? It's not like anybody hates Canada. I mean, why do you think US citizens put maple leafs on their backpacks when they travel around Europe?
The US - yeah, we need a big defense department the way we go around pissing everybody off. But not Canada. They're like a harmless little mouse.
I hate responding to a troll but when it's +4 Informative I'll make an exception:)
Ignoring the many peacekeeping missions we partake in, a military (no matter how anaemic) is essential for any sovereign nation. We're already paranoid enough as it is about becoming the 51st state (you have 50 right?) and without a military it wouldn't be long before the US started saying "well we're the only ones defending you so you must be american territory so all your base are belong to us" (only with smaller/nonexistant words if Bush was still in office) this would be followed by an invasion of Mexico.
I agree with the concept of the Canadian senate, the problem is that it has become little more than a spellchecker at best. Perhaps if a government came in and tried to dismantel our democracy than it might show its use by voting down the offending laws (as long as the party doesn't have the 2/3 majority necessary to overrule the senate). But when considering the kinds of laws that corporate lobbying would get passed the senate is never going to do anything do disagree with the government.
Our Senate is appointed, not elected, so campaign funding on that front isn't really viable. Although out-and-out bribery could still be a possibility.
Important to note that the Senate is also completely useless.
The Prime Minister is the leader of the party with the most seats in the House of Commons, not a separately elected individual, and therefore controls how the party votes.
The PM has some control but not complete. That was one of the biggest problems when Cretien was on his way out and liberal MPs started rebeling on some votes.
Overall I'd say our system is significantly more resistant to corporate influence than the US but we are certainly not immune.
Every baseball fan knows the term "preseason" and "postseason". Apparently Real Networks does not, and thinks it's grounds for a lawsuit.
You seem to be confusing "the season" with "the regular season", during the regular season you often do mention just "the season" for efficiency but I've never felt that there's any confusion in the fact that in baseball, as with hockey and football, "the season" in divided into 3 portions, the preseason, the regular season, and the postseason, the term pre/post season is short for pre/post regular season. The season refers to exactly what it sounds like, the entire period of time when the players are playing, I assume that the first contract had similar language and there didn't seem be any problem then, if the contract does infact cover "the season" than Real is entirely in its rights to sue as MBL did breach its contract.
But that's the point. The Ring didn't appear particularly evil when first used; that's why it's such a shock to Frodo in LOTR to find out its origin.
But that's the point, I doubt if Tolkien even intended Bilbo's ring to be the One Ring in the Hobbit, it sure didn't appear to be anything other than a toy to make Bilbo go invisible. It would be like having an German officer named Hitler in a WWI movie then giving him a part where he's around all of the time but doesn't do anything particularly Hitlary and instead just acts like a normal non-evil guy. It's going to be a very distracting role.
One thing I always wonder when I hear about them planning to do the hobbit is how the heck they'll deal with the ring. It's been a while since I read the Hobbit but I don't remember much of anything about the ring that would suggest it being a super evil thingamabob that is the center of the dark lords power I mean anyone who hasn't read the book but has seen LOTR is going to take one look at gollum and the ring and think of nothing else for the end of the movie, "Hrm, I wonder when gollum will pop out, hrm wonder if the ring will start being evil now".
Other than gandalf going on for about 5 minutes saying "yeah interesting ring and that gollum creature sounded neat, maybe it will be important in the future but I garuntee that absolutely nothing else will happen with respect to either until long after our adventure is done." I can't see how they'll possibly deal with the ring. Are there people here who read the Hobbit after reading LOTR and remember their reactions? Any ideas how they might deal with the ring?
is how it wasn't even nominated for the category of Documentary Feature I mean just look at the amazing footage they got of all the major figures and major events in the quest to destroy the ring. And how they convinced a camera crew to go along with Sam and Frodo on the trek to Mount Doom incredible. How they can ignore this stunning documentary of one of the most crutial events in the history of Middle Earth and...
I know of a similar intersection here in Edmonton, Canada I don't know about your intersection but with this one there is a regular walk signal in one direction, the other direction has a lot less traffic going through so the duration of the light is much shorter, when you press the button to cross in that direction (busy direction has no button) it actually increases the duration of the green light and has a few seconds of walk signal before it starts signalling the hold signal. The duration of the light without pressing the button is less than the duration of the flashing hold signal which means that the lights ordinary duration is less than the minimum time given for people to cross, perhaps it's the same with your intersection?
I remember a while ago here in Alberta Premier Klein made a very interesting quote about global warming where he joked that the end of the ice age was due to dinosaur farts. This made me realize that Klein, and probably a lot of other politicians, not only doesn't believe in science but doesn't even respect it. They'll quote studies when it suits them and claim they have done scientific research but at the end of the day I don't believe science has the slightest baring on their decisions. Therefore it's not surprising that politicians are playing funny with the numbers, after all it's just dinosaur farts.
No, it hasn't really improved my grammar or spelling (sorry grammar nazis), but through the obscene number of posts I've made since I've started contributing to slashdot discussions I have refined my writing skills. In my quest to come across intelligently and post something that people will want to read I've gained valuable communication skills. For evidence I simply consider how much better I do with respect to karma than when I first started posting, sure the karma bonus helps and I've probably learned to be a bit of a karma whore (why post something that no one will read) but I do believe a significant increase in the number of my comments that get modded up is due to writing skills I have improved by posting to slashdot.
As well I've even tried writing short stories and posting them on my site, not that they're any good but it's fun to put up something that someone might read (even if it's only a couple friends who give pleasently baised reviews:). I don't get to write as much as I'd like to but I've found I very much enjoy doing it and I am sure I never would of started if it was not for the ability to post them online even though no one will read them but a couple friends who I could have given them to anyway.
It doesn't matter if it's posts to slashdot or short stories on my site, the online community has inspired me to write things that require thought and that cannot help but cause my writing abilities to improve. Now I merely await the trolls who shall flock to point out that this post isn't well written at all (hey it's 1 am here!).

Shaw is too busy spamming the rest of the world to care about cooperating with an investigation.
Do you have any evidence to back up that accusation?
I found this(couldn't link directly to the shaw page) at spamhaus, how bad that actually is relative to other ISPs I can't really say.
