Consumers have a multitude of options regarding printing technology, at widely varying costs per page. Dell's decision has not eliminated any of the other suppliers or technologies.

In short, unless you manufacture inkjet refill kits, don't worry about this, it doesn't matter and it would change your life in the least.

No it affects my life very much if I do any printing. This is deliberatly deceptive advertising pure and simple. They lower the cost of the origional product knowing that later on you will have to pay them to be able to use it. Sure you'll respond that it's the consumers responsibility to make sure the company isn't trying to pull something on them but you can't expect consumers to do a full check on everything they buy just to make sure the company isn't trying to pull a fast one. Furthurmore as Dell raises their ink cartridges because Dell printer owners have no choice not only does it affect me because of the my reduced buying choice (ie not buying Dell printers) but other companies raise their own ink cartridge prices to follow. Baiting and misleading consumers followed by gouging affects me very much and it should effect you too.

Issac Asimov wrote Foundation as a series appearing in magazines and it was published in 1942 (in the magazine I don't know when it came out as a book). Due to various reasons after about a decade his total earnings for the trilogy were around $1500 (true it was the 50s but still not a lot). It wasn't until 1961 and a new publisher that he started making some good money. Now that is 19 years for a series that won the Hugo award for best all time series beating among others LOTR! And although I don't remember anything specific I think that LOTR took quite a while to start cashing in too. Now I'm not a fan of copywrites lasting forever but the fact is that when it comes to fiction books often peak late and have very long shelf lives (you're still going to find the Foundation trilogy doing well on book shelfs well over 1/2 century after its publishing). I can see reference books having short life spans and software definately deserves a shorter copywrite but I feel that for fiction it would be incredibly unjust to have too short a term and end up writing a major classic and not have any money to show for it.

  19. Re:What is the logic? on Web Site Hacks Rise as War Rages in Iraq · · Score: 1

Well it does work. I once read in a book that the only thing that governments fear is people in the street. The fact is that without the protests the current media climate could leave you to beleive that nobody is strongly against the war. It acts as a final safegaurd against governments running wild. Of course they don't want the soldiers hurt, no where have I heard anything against the actual soldiers but what they may accomplish is diminish support for the US abroad. It could stop other countries from committing troops to the US war effort and the additional illwill the US experiences may make them less likely to wage war in the future or perhaps limit the scope of this current conflict. The fact is that protests are never going to change dedicated people but they give lots of people that they aren't alone in their views and more willing to discuss them with others.

  20. Re:And the point is? on Web Site Hacks Rise as War Rages in Iraq · · Score: 1

I have a question. Did you post before you knew of the other numbers or after? I hope you didn't choose the highest number you could find for obvious reasons.

But on another point I don't put any kind of faith in statistics like that. I live in Alberta and a few months ago the provincial government raised a huge huff about the federal government ratifying the Kyoto protocol. At the time the population in Alberta had about 2/3's support for Kyoto. After about a month of the provincial government advertising against it the it was now 2/3 against the Kyoto protocal. So just how much should we put in those numbers? Just how many of those 60-80% supporting the war believe that fairytale about Sadam and Osama being best buds or that the 9/11 terrorists came from Iraq? When it comes to decisions like this I'm usually very selective about how I choose my position and under what parameters I make my decisions. Frankly the population at large is stupid when it comes to makeing decisions like this and If I were in charge and my opinions were always carried out it would probably form the basis of one of the worst mishmashes of government in history! I elect people whom I trust to make the right decision, then I say okay you are working at this 24/7 are you hopefully understand what is going on so you make the decision and just keep me in the loop (ie media and such) so I know that you're not just screwing with me. A crutial part of this equation is the media is giving me good info. Currently it's my belief that due to a variety of factors the population in the US doesn't fully understand the situation and are thus making an uninformed decision on the subject of war. On the same note the US government is making their decision on political and economic grounds (ie popularity, control of oil resources) and as such their decisions aren't valid either. That doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong but it sure don't make em right.

Oh come on. I'm sure they're a lot of civilians in Iraq who want Sadam gone but you can't take those pictures for a grain of salt. I was watching quite a good discussion on CBC about the war. Either way one of the people was a media correspondent. He said that currently in the US television media the news organizations have a few rules they are enforcing. One is that you cannot criticize the president with out having someone there to immediatly defend him and another is that you don't show civilian casualties. Also another point that was brought up was the "embedded journalists" who are supplying all these great pictures. The consent of all the media people there was that they were getting great pictures but that is was an extremely unhealthy situation. I'm not sure entirely how these embedded journalists work (other than being very closely associated with the soldiers) but the essence was you cannot have any sort of objective coverage from them. You seem for the war, I'm personally against it and I'm sure we both have good reasons and good evidence for our points. However one thing I want to make sure of is that when you choose a position please make sure you're being objective and being honest with yourself. Don't take the coverage from biased media from every more biased journalists as fact. If you do actually want some good coverage see if you can get CBC, of course it's not completely imparital but it's by far the closest I've seen.
