Even if you ignore the declining probability it still doesn't work. The problem is that is works with mob phsycology but forgets that mobs are usually led.
What would of happened if Hitler was killed in WWI? The rise of Nazis easily may not of happened if Hitler wasn't there or if the Nazi's had a leader who was a little more sane they may of won the war.
What if the Soviet leader didn't yield during the Cuban missle Crisis? Maybe nuclear was.
What if Napolean or Genghis Khan never existed? Would their nations still have fought the wars they did? What if Napolean got more sleep band made some better military decisions?
What if Washington was a nutcase and the US was a third world nation today? (assume Canada didn't conquer them;)
Heck what if somebody if Florida knew how to design a ballot and Bush wasn't elected? How different would the current world situation be, maybe Iraq wouldn't of been invaded, maybe even 9/11 wouldn't have happened.
When it comes down to it the path of society is decided by individuals. Sure for things to occur some pre-existing social conditions have to be there (government in complete disorder in Germany and county broke). But a HUGE amount depends on the whims of powerful individuals. I can't see psycohistory working.
On the other hand some general rules on crowd control and being able to control some powerful people could be very useful.. Conspiracy theory anyone?
blacklisting IP addresses of the plaintiffs, libel, invasion of privacy, the publication of allegedly false information and "intentionally interference with a contract".
Allright the blacklisting is allright because the user is requesting those sites to be blacklisted. Don't know about invasion of privacy (probably publishing the names and addresses), publication of false information (isn't that libel?). Finally "intentionally interference with a contract".(well at least it's spammer english:) there was never any contract in the first place and is just the user trying to avoid harassment. I'll be very surprised if this goes anywhere then again we may not have the whole story, remember the register isn't exactly an impartial newssource.
I would be satisfied if Mozilla's new name was just "Not Internet Explorer".
More like
"I can't believe it's not Internet Explorer!"...
okay fortunatly I can believe it's not IE which is why I use it, and yes I do deserve to be savagely beaten for that pathetic attempt at humor, ahh well I only need to decieve 3 people...
Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes! They've got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses! And what's with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?
Of course, there are several "graduate students" that provide a fancy front end (and rear end, for that matter). I think that I would agree with your assesment that they do not need to have that feature, although it might make your days a bit more... ermm... *pleasant*:-)
That does have it's advantages though you should be cautious. In my experience those models often have a large number of bugs in their systems and tend to be a lot more likely to pick up viruses as well. This shouldn't be a problem for most operations but ocassionally if you try to interface them with your other components you may find your other systems becoming infected as well. In extreme cases you may also find interfacing with these systems can cause additional child processes to be created. These child processes are extremely hard to get rid of, early on you may be able to simply kill them but this command becomes extremely impratical after a few months of operation. These processes are known to take up huge amounts of resources and maintainance and often take the better part of 2 decades to subside (they're still present but resource demands drop considerably). Of course many of these risks can be alliviated by using a proper wrapper class while working with this "graduate student" systems.
I would like to distance myself from Toronto. One think many Americans don't understand is that the only Canadians that really like Toronto are the Torontonians (because they think they're the center of the universe). That being said the whole Elvis thing with exploding hard drives was part of one of 5 strategies that they suggested the industry might take though the main article itself was still decidedly conforming to the line the RIAA has been toting (all the internets fault).
But either way as a Canadian, especially a western Canadian please don't blame us for Toronto!
ps. If you could lay off our lumber industry it would be greatly appreciated.
So? It's something fun to think about. I mean that's why the matrix is so popular in the first place, it's just a fun movie and being science fiction lends itself to speculation. Did you really sit through the movie and never once wondered, would that really work? or how would you do that? Don't you have any imagination because that's all this is about.
This guy had some fun coming up with some explanations and we had some fun reading them and maybe learned a couple things in the process(if his science is good), but even if we didn't learn anything so what, where's the harm? No body here is taking this too seriously so why to you have to troll and insult them, just relax and let yourself think about these things for a moment and if you don't enjoy it do something else, but don't go insulting people, you're not helping or impressing anybody.
Currently the human race is on the path to extinction (or at least significant degredation). The fact is that large numbers of people with genetic mutations and just plain bag genes that would of been eliminated from the gene pool are now living and reproducing. When it comes to the longterm survival of the species we really only have a few alternatives.
1. Eugenics. Not a choice we want to take forced sterilization has been tried in the past (the Canadian government for a while in the 40s or 50s (i think) had the forced sterilization of people with mental disabilities) and this would constitute quite a serious breach of a persons rights and could start us down a slippery slope. Another option is screening of fetus' while this may work for serious disabilites i don't really see it pratical trying to work out whether the fetus is productive enough to keep, this is also difficult to execute while avoiding the species degrading as you would have to reject fetus' who are just a little stupid or destined to have other minor problems otherwise you're just avoiding the inevitable.
2. No more medicine or at least careful application of it. Only treat those ill by accident, not by genetic weaknesses, not a nice alternative either.
3. Selective breeding. Been doing this for a few thousand years (with livestock). Not sure to what extent it was practiced with ancient slaves but selective breeding is certainly a reason why the US has so many great black athlete's currently. This would be hard to enforce and again would constitute major violations of human rights. Again not an option I'd choose.
4. Do nothing. Simple enough we keep improving health care and ignore the genes. Eventually either the situation gets so bad we have to take an alternative or the race is degraded to a point where it can't sustain its society and we either collapse destroying ourselves entirely or fal back to a point where evolution takes over again until we get to that point again. Rinse and repeat. Not fun either.
5. Genetic therapy. Start with fixing obvious defects but slowly build up to actual improvements. Depending on implementation we quickly reach a point where the rich form a true nobility, in other words if your parents are rich you actually are faster, smarter, stronger, and more stable (as long as you don't get too arrogant). One solution to this is strict controls on the amount of genetic engineering like with a public health care system. Everybody gets free access to the same treatment regardless of wealth or status and everybody wins. Social stability remains and the race keeps improving. Sounds like the best option to me.
Whay do you mean you've never been to Alpha Centauri? For heaven's sake mankind, it's only four light years away you know. I'm sorry, but if you can't be bothered to take an interest in local affairs that's your own lookout. Energize the demolition beams.
I don't know, apathetic bloody planet, I've no sympathy at all.
They may have a point. But computer users are becomming smarter and smarter.
Only to a point, people are more comfertable with computers and a increasing number are becoming quite proficient (ie power users and programmers) just due to sheer numbers but the biggest difference is the software is a whole lot smarter.
Surely they will just invent some AI version of software with a nice point anc click interface (more so than there is now) that creates all the software you need!
And just what instructions will you point and click? I'm sure that at some point far in the future we may reach that level but we haev a huge distance to do till there still. Currently we are moving towards the area of higher level languages (like Java) which remove the need to deal with some lower level processes (like memory management to an extent) and provide a powerful API. But we still need to write all but the most general algorithms ourselves and I don't see anything on the horizon that will change that (auto code generating for UI stuff is an idea but still has a very long way to go). Basically we can expect the languages to get higher and higher levels but at the end you'll still need someone who knows about algorithms and has a fnial plan for what the software has to do.
I wonder if you could (and would) try and explain why it is you are enjoying yourself?
Essentially at the start I was training for a half marathon. As a result at the beginning I tried to go for really long runs to get in shape and I trained on roads because it was a road race. It was also really hot which didn't help. Either way when I started runninga again after the race I did it with no actual race in mind and just ran trails (cooler and much more interesting).
My advice is first make sure you have good shoes. Good running shoes really help they're lighter, more comfertable and really help you avoid injury, go to an actual store that concentrates in running shoes and talk to the sales people, usually in places like that they are very knowledgable. Also it helps to pick up a model from last year as it will save a few bucks, if you already have a pair see how old they are and what condition they are in. The rule of thumb is about 6 months of use (sorry don't know how many hours of running it is) , either way make sure they still have good support to avoid injuries. Another thing is bring water (you can buy water bottle holders that strap onto your back), if you go for any distance you're going to get thirsty which can really bring down your workout and make you miserable, usually I end up taking a drink about every 15 minutes or so. As to music I tried to run with a walkman a couple times but found it more of a nuiscence than anything and it takes away from the relaxation.
As for routes my advice is make your path as interesting as possible. I basically find the narrowest twistiest trail that I can still run on, hills can be fun too as long as they're within your ability. But my biggest advice is take it easy on yourself. Don't try to run yourself into the ground the first time out or you'll get discouraged. Currently if I havn't gone for a run for a few months the first run I do usually leaves me sore for about 3-4 days (this really depends on the person) so don't get discouraged if you do get sore. Also when you go for the run try to go at a time when your feeling restless, my best runs are when I have some free time and start to feel restless, I find that usually when I run at a time when I feel like I have to get home and finish some work I have a miserable time and just want to finish. I run best at evening when it's cool out and I can just go out and relax. Hope that helps out some.
Doesn't that wake up you? I mean if you get energy from exercise, the heart starts pumping - the enringe gets revved up as it were? (referring to push ups and sit ups before going to bed)
Basically I just do it then because it's a really convenient time (do it every night) and it only takes 5 minutes (just 1 set of each), so it doesn't take long enough to get me too revved up but tires my muscles a bit. Basically the advantage of it is that it's small enough so that I can easilly do it every night (if I don't I start thinking "hey it will only take like 2 minutes come on!" and end up doing it anyways). I basically figgure that after a few months it will really start to make a difference and I feel better for doing it anyways.
Either way just take it easy and relax at the start and try to keep it up, if from there you want to do more than go for it and above all enjoy.
I was worried about this when I saw the/. story a couple days ago but didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to give M$ any ideas myself. But I guess they read the/. story too and got the idea anyways. If only Pudge hadn't posted the story M$ would never have found out and Apple would have gotten away with it. DAMM YOU ?> !!!!
5. DON'T RELY ON ANYTHING. Don't do exercises. I don't do exercises because I know I can't keep them up. Too many stories of "oh I lost 50lbs once, but now it's all back" what did they do differently? Stopped anything they were doing which shocked their body.
I was with you on the other ones but I have to stop you here. Sure if you don't think you can keep it up don't make it an essential part of your weight loss program but still do it if you can. Don't equate a slim waist line alone as meaning healthy. I know lots of skinny people that are in worse shape than some of my chunkier friends simply because they don't do any exercise. My experience is that people start too hard and discourage themselves before they get into a routine they can maintain.
Here's some tips I learning. If you want to try running or jogging start short distances, last summer I made the mistake of running long distances from the get go while training for a race and after about a month wasn't enjoying myself and gave up (well as soon as I finished the race). A few weeks later I decided to start casually running some trails and within a few weeks was going for much longer runs at a lot better pace and was enjoying myself immensely. Likewise I've gotten myself into the routine of a set of push-ups and sit-ups before I go to bed every night and now am able to easily keep up this very simple routine and feel restless if I don't.
Please don't underestimate the effect of exercise it makes a huge difference not only on your weight but on how much energy you have and the pride that comes with keeping even a simple regiment and it can be a load of fun if you keep within your limits.

Is the judge just refering to economic damage or is there some other potentiaal cause for damage?
That means faster and more realistic video games and Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies folks, what could be bad about that?
Yeah but we don't actually know anything about the size or complexity of the formula. That's why most graphics use simplexes to model shapes (ie simplest shape in n -dimensions) like a triangle in 2-D or tetrahedron in 3-D depending on what you need. I can currently model a cube with 12 triangles or 5 tetrahedrons and only 8 vertices, how many would I need with this formula? I'm sure this formula does have its applications but until we can actually see it I'm going to bet that it won't be in your next fps.
If they try to patent this idea, I'm citing Johnny Mnemonic as prior art!!!
Hmmm, not sure if I'd call that art.
After all you have a much better chance of building something just as successful as the real thing!!
