    crap performance from crap employees. i can't imagine any but the least knowledgeable it staff agreeing to a gig like this. the best in the field tend to go where they're paid the best - not where they _may_ get a bonus on occasion.

    but with windows, i never have to shut down or restart. the reason varies based on who owns the machine. if it's my windows box, i am able to get multi-month uptimes. the only time i allow a reboot is when i decide to allow windows update to do it's thing. but other windows boxen i have dealt with often crash before i'm able to go to start/shutdown.

    i learned to use the mouse with my left hand BACAUSE of those games - specifically half life. the sidewinder (right hand) was used for running, jumping, firing, etc. the mouse (left hand) was used for aiming. it took only a few days for me to become comfortable with this setup, and within a few weeks i was using the mouse lefty exclusively.

    it was not a software glitch. it was manually entered data. he simply switched two fields in some order entry app. i'm sure the trader has already ended his life from shame.

    i live in rockland county. just moved there from brooklyn... i have purchased many, many things from these areas. your blanket stament indicates you don't know how to tell the difference between a legit business and a scam factory. furthermore, scam factories exist everywhere - not just nyc and its suburbs.

    as a side note - i noticed you missed westchester and fairfield counties in your statement. you only trust a company/business if it's west coast or among the most expensive areas in the country?

    more college students have a computer than a tv because there is no need for more than 1 tv per room. a dvd drive and internet connection are no match for a tv with a dvd capable console. how many college kids in these days of 'free' cable in dorms (depending on the school obviously) don't have access to a tv in their room?

    pine is for pansy ass pico users. real /.rs read a raw mail file and submit mail via command line interactions with a smtp server. in reality, it's not as hard or impressive as it sounds.

    isn't it more like deciding to keep your cat3 wiring which is already in place instead of rewiring with cat[56]? if you have a 100Mb hub and wiring capable of up to 100Mb transmission and nics capable of up to 100Mb transmission, why would rewire for 10Gb? seems like a waste of time|money.

    a simple solution to updating pointers is to keep a circular list. when the position of one of your list elements changes, simple rip through your list and update the invalid pointers. i have found this to work quite well for lists on the order of 10s of thousands of elements (i never have to defragment, but i do realloc...). would you like some pseudocode to demonstrate this simple task? it sounds like you have a hard time visualizing anything pointer related...

    as far as offsets, why would objects NOT change relative to each other? i assume you have some sense and are NOT allocating one object at a time when you know more than one element of the same type will exist. if you are, then it's time to go back to your design and rethink things. now i see why you're so worried about fragmentation...

    you can find all existing pointers and update them. it's not that difficult if you designed your application with this kind of thing in mind. and if you don't want to update pointers, use offsets. offsets remain correct regardless of address.

    i find that multiple monitors works well for cleaning up - especially if you cheat. i have 2 monitors for work, 1 for play (primarily outlook & ie). of course, the 2 'work' monitors are filled with a single exceed session (full screen), which has 4 virtual desktops (olvwm). it's a nice setup as i can have 9 monitors worth of information displayed on 3 monitors. i don't need to worry about any virtual desktop emulation for xp - i let olvwm handle it. and the nice part, since exceed is just one app, the taskbar isn't cluttered.

    as a side-note, have you checked out the microsoft virtual desktop utility (it's toward the bottom of the page...)? i have found it to work just fine on my home system (only 1 monitor there)

    and how, pray tell, do you know they're faking? are you that creepy old guy that grabbed my phone the other day in the supermarket and made sure someone was on the other end? i'm calling bs on this one...

    your daughter doesn't sound too smart. do you realize that she can keep the phone on and just not pick up if it's not someone she wants to talk to? there's this new-fangled technology known as "caller id" - it usually gives a phone number/name of the caller. this should help to decide "gee, i don't want to talk to stacy. i'll hit the 'cancel' button" or "gee, my dad never calls unless it's important".
