I agree that it would be better to try and help the people than to point fingers. But Vista has made enough negative Headlines to keep the Title of the "OS that caused all the trouble" no matter what.
That sounds like you never tried any of the mor popular Linux distributions. SuSE, Fedora, Mepis, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, With none of those the average User does ever need to compile their own kernel. Since i use Ubuntu exclusively i never had to do anything at all to configure my Laptop correctly other than clicking "Yes i want to use the proprietary graphics driver" since that was my only option for 3d acceleration. Even - and that's what impressed me the most - suspend to ram works flawless. None of the above can be said about my installation of Windows XP (which is for gaming exclusively since i never bothered to go hunting for all the Applications needed to make it a remotely useable working environment).
I would put all those resources into driver development. Especially the GPL graphics driver Projects for NVIDIA and ATI cards. But any other widespread comodity hardware that needs to use binary crutches at the moment to be useful under Linux needs help too. I think FOSS Comunity has already shown that Applications and Desktop Experience need no extra help. With driver development the Situation is a little different. It's hard to do in your spare time. There are not so many People who have the needed skills. Reverse engineering takes loads time and resources. The Developers need to have the Hardware to make drivers for it.
Maybe the "human rights activists" here posting from the USA should first take action against their own government. I'm thinking in the lines of Guantanamo...
You might want to try Wubi. It's still beta, but reasonably safe, und you don't have to do Partitioning at all. http://wubi-installer.org/ BTW: If you install Ubuntu the way one usually installs windows eg: Backup umportant data, Wipe Drive, Install, it is just as easy;-)
The only thing that even Linus didn't like about GPLv3 is the anti-tivoization section. Who would ship a devize that is locked down like tivo with gcc?
I clearly don't se a need for ABI compatibility over different kernel versions. When there is a new driver, and it's well designed and has an acceptable, it'l clearly go into the next kernel version. Then it will be packaged by all the distributors and off you go. If it doesn't have an acceptable license, or is even binary only, it's maker has to take care to get the Distributors include a new version compiled for the new Kernel. Works for me.
While i'm generaly sharing your conclusions, you forget one interesting point here: it's common practice of graphic card vendors to tune their driver specifically for some selected benchmarks. This would not be possible witch an OS driver for obvious reasons.
At the end of the day, you have to trust *someone*. Companies are not automatically evilly hegemonistic...
In fact they are by definition at leas the ones that sell stock. If they were not their shareholders would sue them into non existence, for not maximizing their profits in every possible way.
I seriously think, that when you dont want to annoy people, simply don`t put them on hold. If you don`t have enough capacity to handle all incoming calls, you could take peoples numbers, or simply respond with a busy-signal, like it`s meant to be. I am much more annoyed when i pay for listening to some how ever good Music, when i just don`t want to hear any, than by an onest busy signal. With the latter i can at least do something else and try it again later without wasting money on calls.

You have a point here, but at a bank or grocery store i don`t have to pay to be allowed to wait.
