gamespot and rainbow six asked you to write an article on slashdot so they would get some hits.
I see through your clever marketing scheme..
once bought, always bought.
most people on slashdot work for dotcoms..
what is up with this post dotcom thing?
you mean, "post a jillion dotcoms without any product and ten bazillion dollars in monopoly money"
I think that is what you mean...
Some jobs right now are being filled with interns who are desperate for work, and those jobs are being lost to the for pay workers.
This is not a major problem, but I have heard of this from more than one person.
As far as coming just out of college, there is little for you right now. It is tough finding people with "actual" experience, however since all the guys who used to have some form of the word "guru" in their title have now given up and gone back to mcdonalds which is where they should be, the herd is thinning and within a year or so the whole industry should be back to somewhat normal, abeit with a new "security" bent as that is the new thing for everyone..
Learn PHP/MySQL Linux, FreeBSD (install Gentoo for fun) and read the book "DNS and BIND" with a followup on BGP and routing, put some of it to practive doing small/cheap jobs for local business (helps them, helps you, everybody wins) then touch up your resume and you should be in decent shape to enter the industry at an entry level position (this all provided you don't want to go the Mickeysoft route, in that case just go and buy a cert from somebody and learn buzzwords like (dot)NET )..
A programmer who needed a break and saw this and laughed..
-back to coding now..
this is just further proof of why you should run qmail.
In this shop, we did one further and now use our own which is all mysql based called IRIS.
Anyone using sendmail for mail is just asking for it.
here we have bands that are "created" by the record companies to create music that someone thinks we "like" which is sort of funny.
I read through the entire article and the only thing I could think was, this would be good for america, maybe we would actually find the talent now that it is not all about being rich and passion for the art is what drives it..
Yea, this is our future hopefully..
We can all just hope we end up more like china in this regard.
Jeez.. come on, you think they are going to go after your little brother for downloading Weird Al recordings?
hrm.. maybe they will...
But I doubt it. However, they are using tactics like these to scare people, and it is working (the comment about sweating in the main post) and that is ridiculous.
We need a good encrypted filesharing app, with each box running it using a PGP key which is publically available *offshore* somewhere.. This could all be automated of course.
grumble
Popfile rocks.. used it for a while 89% accuracy.. but the 11% is actually relatives/friends sending me stupid forwards, so in reality is is about 99% accurate.. nice..
The article mainly states that segways on crowded streets going three times the speed of a pedestrian are probably dangerous. If you have been to SF then you would be worried about some overweight sysadmin putting up California street on one of these as I could only imagine and out of control segway going down that..
well, I guess I am curious as to why you would complain about begin flamebait in the first place.. I mean, I would not be complaining if this was modded as flamebait. Grousy about it usually is just going to get you modded further down (if I had some moderator points...)
Are you planning on going by condor on IRC again?;)
(and hey, always keep that key in your wallet, you never know when one might come in useful.)
cheers
Hi, We have a network of over fifty servers all monitored by Nagios and it has served us well.
My question is this:
Your software came with the option of the new "Object" model which you are switching to. When you have over fifty servers each with multiple services this creates a *huge* object file that sysadmins have to create.
I wrote a PHP application just to manage all of these issues and generate the object files from a database I created. The main nagios server connects to the central DB-server PHP page and wgets a fresh object file for it's child servers once each hour or so to facilitate changes. But I digress, my question is "How come no tools like this were released 'with' nagios?" And, would you be interested in my publishing the source for these programs or are you going to change this object file format at a later date?
This is a project I worked on a while ago and honestly have not looked recently but I remember sitting and scratching my head for a while wondering why this had not been implemented with the release.
The movie Wargames came out in 82' so naturally in 83 there was quite a bit of furvor over "hacker kids" who could possibly bring about the end of the world by using a computer..
(82'? damn.. it has been twenty years.. okay.. feeling old).
This of course freaked out every person, who was already then afraid of computers, even more..
I like to think sometimes about how I used to hear people talk of computers and then compare to how they talk now.
So naturally we are going to have "hasitly" written books out on the subject, there was an intense demand..
Of course, I was off perusing the latest Ultima game from the Sherwood forest bbs about that time I think..
fun fun fun...
gocr http://jocr.sourceforge.net/download.html
easily scriptable.. I toyed around with it for a while to test the various "robot-proof" systems that require actualy humans to see things..
Well, I can tell you that no, those are not 100% fully workable. Using just gocr you could identify 70% of these text in images from simple random sites using these to thwart automated sign-ups etc..
I do a blog helper application called QBoard, qboard.org which is a free version of the tagboards bloggers have been using for a while. I see A LOT of blogs that sign up for our little free product and I can say with certainty that 90% of them are complete and total crap that bring me back to the days of the "frame-craze" or the crazy colors with blinking text and animated images with background sounds (if I wanted your website to make noise I would lick my finger and drag it across my screen).. I am waiting for the blog frenzy to die a little death and move to where it belongs, sites like livejournal etc.. Once journalist get over themselves and people realize that nobody really cares what their cd collection is like, the better. Well, in my opinion... but then I am a programmer and am so bored with blog-girls with webcams showing their tits and little boys who think they are pretty and design sites for only IE and Mozilla/Netscape be damned because they use some product that can't comply for us linux users. bahh
How odd, though I am reminded of people making bots for Ultima Online in order to have their characters make money.. Saying most of these games are simply character building anyway.. I played lineage (lineagethebloodpledge.com) for a while until I got bored with character building and wanted to explore, explore before character building and you get killed. fun..
I have set up a large scale ALICE bot that people can put on their webpages at qboard.org (not 'just' a bot, it functions as a news tool, etc..) and am testing that out.. It has had 15,000 conversations so far! So, Hemo's if you want a bot that chats for you too.. ?;) check botspot..

all that free stuff I sent you didn't make you want to write this article? i am confused.
woo woo.. I like fruit pies.
