I think what some of the posters here fail to understand is the entire thing with :
infinite time infinite space infinite possibilities
given those variables, I think it is entirely possible that we might be more "normal" than one would think considering we are made up of the this stuff and the fact that these things have a tendency to fall into place in certain ways naturally.
I actually think it is an thought-cop-out to just declare a "designer" did something instead of coming to grips with the idea of trillions and trillions of stars and infinity.
First thing, does this company really need an IS dept? or do they just need someone who runs around fixing things?
If they indeed do 'need' an IS dept, update your resume and then:
you need to come up with a "dire" consequences sceanario, then write up quotes and at least double to triple them (that way you might get your needed funds).. If needed, make something break, multiple times, just to show how crippled they are, blame the guy who left and explain you have been forced to use 'this junk'.. Have a handy quote in your desk drawer that you had got "a while back" and have a few spare good resumes around that have recently come in.. Use lots of acronyms (yes, technobabbling someone is low but when their eyes glaze over you can insert a lot of 'ideas' in there..) but most of all, make them think it is their idea.
show them what the competition is doing, explain that they are being outmoded. using fear to compel them to 'upgrade' is a great. of course, it is their idea..
don't get too chicken little about it, but show them what a bofh is and force your ideas through, of course though, it is their idea you can just be the "go-to guy"..
-or-
if the above fails, use that updated resume and go to a company with an IS dept, otherwise they are determined to use an 'abacus' and are doomed to live in the past..
catch up? I would say that yes, some people are playing catch up.. but for the most part (in my experience) linux users don't want to use a system that runs like windows.. I know I don't.. With things like cedega where you can play windows games under linux (I have noticed huge speed/framerate increases) all the emulation etc there is not much reason to *need* to use windows anymore.. besides, if you want an upgrade you need to send info to MS and have a verified install etc.. For end users, Ubunto is supposed to be very easy on installation etc.. Gentoo admittedly is a bit of a poweruser/tweakers distribution.. They need a nice alternative graphical install with base packages and a graphical emerge tool. as for "killer apps" linux is where killer apps are born and is still the number one server software in the world.. there and also MacOS (windows copied them) and they are always one step ahead of windows.. anyway..
yes, but centOS does not have the most active online forum on the planet (see forums.gentoo.org) *and* have the massive documentation and user support (see gentoo-wiki.org) etc etc.. I am sure it is great, but you will still find yourself looking over the gentoo forums to get answers when you have a question about something:):P
"RPM hell"? going to attempt to not be a 'typical gentoo spaz' here.. but:
install gentoo, might take a few minutes longer to install but you will never need to deal with rpm's again which is pure beauty... need to install mysql? type `emerge mysql` and all your dependencies are done for you, while you can sit and drink your cup of coffee and read the garbage posted here...
boss says "is our sshd up to date, there was a bug released the other day?" you say "yes, was patched last week." because you know that you cron'd up `emerge -U world` to run every sunday at 2am and you know that emerge will not clobber your config files.. boss looks at you, smiles in appreciation of all your hard work and says "good job, glad you are so on top of all these things"..
you go back to reading slashdot and finish your coffee as you get an email from the redhat admin down the street who will have to work late while he has to upgrade 15 redhat boxes and has numerous issues with dependencies to resolve..
why not just ask the frod chevy question while you are at it and then link to microsoft and linux for good measure.. how did this make it to the front page and why are people still talking about mysql as if they were purchased by SCO, from what I read SCO bought a license to use MYSQL..
-anyone: "hey guys, SCO bought some acme widget" -slashdot: "acme is evil!!! we will boycott acme!! death to SCO"
as a directnic employee working remotely from Manhattan I have been working round the clock to aid these guys any way I can. we are on freenode in #interdictor
we have had a lot of support, thank you guys.
as far as directnic employees, we have made contact with most, we are still missing our entire accounting/HR department and many of our support people are MIA, we can only assume they got out.
as a company, the majority of our employees are currently homeless and are regrouping in Florida currently.
They are pretty hardcore there, not sure they can even get out now..
was just reviewing this thread and ran across this and thought it was funny..
true they have not "done" that.. however, having lived in New Orleans and seen how they act during mardi gras, and during gay pride I can say that yes, if given they chance they sure would do those thing... in a heartbeat... You clearly have never seen Southern Baptists at their finest.
all it takes is seeing them waving signs that say "If you are gay you deserve to die of AIDS" or "AIDS is your punishment".. saw some signs that even said that "Internet addicts" were going to hell...
I would be walking to work, minding my own business (and I look very normal, not even overweight or anything) and they would be screaming that I was going to go to hell.. my response: "Actually no, I am going to work, but thanks anyway"..
These people are filled with so much hatred with their megaphones telling everyone they are evil.. I have no doubt in mind that they would gladly and en masse kill anyone who they felt were sinners and via thier views on aborting, they are already stoning rape victims.. Have you ever seen them attack an abortion clinic, I have seen them throw rocks at women going in... They have burned down porn shops and strip clubs.
windows admins just press the reboot button.. that is most of what you need to know.. getting a certification? certs are generally worthless, and in an interview, you should be able to pick up on the vibe of the person.. we have hired certified guys who have no critical thinking and no flexibility or adaptibility... 'generally', we look down on certs at my work.. "real life" experience is by far preferred..
not just that, but sites that have you register and then plaster ads on anything.. then, from what I gather is going on, the ads your mouse hovers over your email gets added to the lists for those advertisers to spam you..
yay for sites like bugmenot and mailinator.com
but remember you can always pay for slashdot if you want... maybe that is how you get links without registration required? hrm
no.. probably get added to the "willing to pay for stuff that is free anyway.." lists.
bah.. screw the article, not interested in even bothering today
I was about ready to post about this.. heh again namedropping "Philip C. Dick" could have been pointed had he meant it be a point about the erroneous fact checking of the material..but sadly I think the reviewer has made an error there.. and saying that 'C' is nowhere near 'K' on the keyboard I cannot rightly call it a typo.. so... umm.. well, we now have a review of a SF book by a guy who doesn't even know the important authors.
quit giving bloggers more reason to think they are actually listened to.. the signal to noise ratio is out of hand already to the point that you could spend all day every day reading their tripe and come up with nothing original or interesting.. 13 year old girls with colored markers, the lot of you!
heh... actually I *pay* each and every month for my network connection... if sites go belly up from not being able to sell ads, then I am soooo happy to help in that. We need less websites... Remember why you started using google in the beginning, because they had no ads or junk.. that was the big draw.. now, google is looking more and more like old altavista with the garbage in the index... Yahoo is no longer only manual additions... It is just sad... Get rid of the ads, sell an actual service if you want money... Seeing adsense ads on blogs that drop words just to get the most money per click is just ridiculous... Everyone and their mother is doing adsense now...
saying you want to talk about how you are "supporting" sites by viewing the garbage parts of the site... it is stupid, why would you do that? when was the last time you clicked on an advertisement online? most are scams anyway...
I live in Manhattan and you can just run down to chinatown if you want that.. There are entire malls dedicated to electronics and comics and figures.. There is one "underground" one also that has all the latest games in Japanese as well, with individual sellers able to go in and set up a booth. The Japan society has huge anime and game conventions and there is a separate annual manga/anime convention in NY as well as Anime movie festival... SF is close, but not quite like it is here...
their advertisers are threatening to pull out. that means you pull *everything* if you want to stay in business.. apparently she is just that bad.
I wouldn't know if she is or isn't, because I could care less what some reporter thinks is going on in my industry, no matter what they almost always get it wrong.
Just harken back to the days coverage of the heavensgate cult...
Almost wish after seeing this article that we could moderate articles on slashdot.. maybe give the articles a "nerdfactor" or whatever (you know, tie in with that slogan up there) then we could view by daily nerdfactor.. that would be so much nicer to be able to moderate this whole new slough of these "paid" or "planted" articles that everyone seems to be noticing. In the last couple months, reading through the articles comments on plants, you will notice more and more people getting irritated with the PR articles and suspiciously placed articles.
am a python programmer here, but at work we use php, and can tell you from experience writing some monster sites, that php if done right, is just fine for high-end apps. usually your database is the bottleneck, not php. python is great, but I really prefer php in it's natural environment, alongside apache.
Not particularly directed at the parent post..

see how the above is not helping out anything..
this is ridiculous troll trying to politicize..

no matter what, people still fundamentally want to put their entire cd collection list on their websites (remember that trend?)
people are self-absorbed and think they are interesting.. when in fact, most are not... but it does not stop them from trying..
does it run linux?
if so.. cool..
otherwise, I sheet on it!!

based on that article, I would say they were invited with open arms...
