I dont know much about this, but it was mentioned many times that Kali works with Blizzard, they got some sort of license for hosting blizzard games...
Was it maybe that bnetd did not want to pay for a license? If they would have, would they have the cd-check built into bnetd?
Does anyone know if Kali does cdchecks? Can you play d2 or any of the other blizzard games that use cdchecks on kali?
Yea, I think I can remember my lights on my modem would sometimes stay lit for a few seconds at a time, who knows how many 1's could have flown by in that time frame..
I would imagine that the person who is bored enough to actually want to try this would need to know the exact line speed to sync the lights with the packets or something. I dunno, im still doubtful this works but oh well, I dont have the time to debunk it =P
How many bits can be transmitted over a 56k modem a second? Do you really see your data light flash that many times a second, and if you did, wouldn't it look more like a solid light instead of it blinking?
I guess I can say they are my favorite kind of advertising on the web besides no advertising.. Not saying i like it, its just the least obtrusive form of ads there is, but they still are annoying
Yea, I remember some I think they were from IGN, it would like put this HUGE car that drives across my screen (realize this ad is covering EVERYTHING, as in its on top of all my browsers and everything). I think this ad was for a toyota car or something like that, but man was that annoying.
I don't really mind the banner ads as much, only when its obvious that the adserver is bogged down (ign.com did this for a while, where all the ign sites would use one adserver, and it would make it unbearable to wait for it to load up). Me not minding them and me using them to buy stuff are 2 different things though. Sure, ive seen some slick ads when reading slashdot, but if I see something that im interested in, i'll usually try to find something like it available locally, if I can't find it, i usually never buy it from an online store. (I did buy the DVDCCA shirt that had DeCSS on it from thinkgeek I think, but it was not because of any ad I saw.).
Its getting so bad that all of our local theaters show ads during the movie previews.. Usually they are sprite ads, or jeep ads, and they are just as annoying as a popup ad on a page.
Ah well, i'll see how it goes with this ad stuff, I might cough up some money if its annoying, it seems like hush money to me at that point, but its not much, and slashdot is a great site..
Yea, I dont ever buy shit from a banner ad at all, and I doubt I ever will click on a banner ad, mainly because I see them as a tool of satan =P Ok they aren't that bad, but they get really annoying at times. (especially when a whole group of sites use one ad server, and the pages take forever becuase the ad server is bogging down).
In any case, I probably wont pay any money to not see ads, but I wont be clicking them either. Im sorry if thats evil, but if I want to buy something, I go to who I trust and buy from them, that company I buy from may use banner ads, but I still wont 'click' on one to buy something.
when usb2 products became avalible, boasting speeds of 400mbps
USB2.0 has 480mbps, not 400..
USB1.1 has 12mbps, and the nomad is a USB1.1 device (or usb 1.0, I think they both operate with the same bandwidth).
If you have that on usb along with an optical mouse/scanner/printer and whatever else, your probably going to at least be getting 10mbps, unless your scanning, printing, and going wild with your mouse.. In any case, lesson here is dont buy any massive storage device that only uses USB1, just get a external firewire/usb2.0 drive =).
Thats the thing that really pisses me off about safedisc, macrovision is acting like IEEE or some other group that sets standards with these 'safedisc compatable cdrom drives'. You try to go to macrovision.com and find a list of these drives.. they don't exist.
Im involved in the support of some popular games that use safedisc on the cds. We have an article that tells us what drives are known to be compatable with safedisc, but it really doesn't help at all, there's maybe 100 cdroms listed (has to be that certain firmware revision on it) and you'll still find times when those drives still don't work with safedisc.
And from the information that macrovision wants people to know is that its all based on the hardware of the cdrom, as in, if you have a compatable cdrom, it wont matter what os you use. I know of a couple cdrom drives that work under win9x with safedisc fine, but not winxp. Im not saying its macrovisions fault, but they just act too much like they are trying to make safedisc a standard or something.
Another thing that they really don't realize is that their philosophy of trying to stop the 'casual copier' just isn't flying. Cracks for safedisc are about as common as aol cds. All they do is frustrate end users who are honest, and may not have the cdrom of the week. Luckily they are changing to a new safedisc that does the check during the setup, so you don't have to have the cd in the drive everytime you start the program. I haven't seen many drives that have a problem with that check, in fact I can't remember one. Im not saying im getting soft with macrovision, its just less of a headache for me now...
Anyway, my thought on the topic..
I have heard from some other posts that kali had a license from blizzard to host their games, which I would imagine would include the cd key check of some sort, but im not positive. If its the case, i can see their stance. I feel they could have probably been more open about the whole thing, such as saying we talked to them at first, and they were unwilling to operate (as in bnetd not willing to bend over for blizzard) so we had to do this to protect our product. I can understand, pirating games is quite the hobby of tons of people out there, and they need to make a buck too. I bought diablo 2, in fact I got the collectors edition, as well as the expansion, and im glad I bought them, as diablo 2 is a great, great game. The problem I would have, if I played online, would be that if I had a bad connection to battle.net, but not bnetd, and now blizzard is shutting off my only way of playing online.
I can see them getting pissed at letting war3 use something besides battle.net, as im sure every bit of data they can use in the small amount of time they tested would have helped them, and having people play the game on other servers doens't help them much. Most of those people probably wouldn't even post any bugs any way(notice the MOST, don't bitch at me if you did submit bugs).
I was gonna preview this before posting but i gotta run, so if i said something dumb up above I apologize in advance =)
You act like this liscense is free. Sure, if the university already has this liscense its great, im not saying it isn't.
What happens if you DO NOT HAVE THIS LISCENSE AND YOU WANT TO GET ONE!
Im sure it costs quite the pretty penny. Thats all I was trying to say. And no, I guess I don't know how much of a fucking moron I am, my question was a valid one. Like I said, its about as best as you can get with a liscense like that, but they aren't free. If you have a such a liscense, I guess you really shouldn't even be worried about any of this, but if a company out there is interested in building a cluster, and has a lot of pc's already, that type of liscense would work good for them, until they see that its probably a few million dollars a year or more.
The only one I have used is litestep, it was a shell replacement for explorer.exe. Worked out ok, but it had its problems... I just think it would take a lot of work to figure out how to fully replace explorer.exe when you can't look at the source or at least find knowledgeable people/info.. Do you think microsoft would have an article on replacing explorer? I doubt it, so we probably wont see any real good/stable explorer replacements for a while..
Of course progman.exe works good as a shell, but i liked using Outlook instead. It has a local file system browser, ie built into it, etc etc.. works great actually =)
That copy protection you talk about is only effecting a small population of diablo 2 users. Ive played on battle.net once, but since then I like playing locally on a LAN much better. I just had a lan party this weekened, and we used my key for every machine, each machine connected to battlenet to get the update, and then we just cancelled the logon screen, and we were able to play no problem.
Bnet would allow people with bad keys to play yes, but it also gives people another option. Its almost like saying that you cannot use normal tcp/ip to play, you have to use blizzard/tcpip to play instead.
You should have every right to chose how you play a multiplayer game, you should not have only the option of blizzard.net and local lan, what if your connection to battlenet is crap, but your connection to bnetd is great? Id chose bnetd any day of the week..
Ah well, im sure that someone will release the code to let all of us run bnetd servers (I have not read into much of bnetd, not sure if it requires a lot of hardware or whatnot, but I dont see it requiring much.
It can also be used if you want to do some homebrew GBA games on your own, and you can try them out on actual hardware, not on software emulators.. That's the reason that I have wanted to get one, now it may prove tough to find one it seems..
Actually the samsung phone your talking about that stored mp3's also plays them, and its available in a 64mb model (I have that one). Its also a fairly small phone, so I would imagine you could pack more room on a normal sized phone.
(by the way does anyone know how to store normal data files on the phone, aka turn it into a small 64mb usb hard drive?)

I dunno, the way its setup now with blizzard games it works fine. With diablo 2, I have my own cd key and one from the expansion, and I use those when I play on battle.net.
I can also take those same keys, and use them on every install of diablo 2 and we can have them all use the same key and we can play a lan game with no problems.
The BT patent is not aimed at any particular method used to achieve hyperlinking, but instead purports to cover how links are used in particular contexts, Sunstein said.
Hmm..
It seems like this kind of thought will provoke others to take existing technology and ideas, and start patenting specific uses, or how they are used in certain contexts, and patent them.
Its really sad that the patent system came to what we have today, I would love to see how the originators of the patent system would think of this. It would be like patenting the use of a horse to go from city a to city b or something.
Ah well, I hope the best for this 80 year old guy, he seems to have a great mind when it comes to the world, and BT needs a big slap in the face.
