I lost my Little Green Man in 1995. I've been looking for him ever since.
Oh sweet sweet Bolo how I miss you. I only got to play it at a University once. (I'm in Unveristy now so the glory days of Bolo predated my post secondary)
As a new Windows developer by profession, there are a few places I've found very helpful:
MSDN of course. But using the Web for it makes me want to bang my head against the wall. The context sensitive help in Visual Studio is much faster. Both the web site search and the Help Viewer search SUCK. Use Google instead.
But for arcane Win32 API calls you can't beat Google Groups. The Microsoft MVPs hang out in the developer groups and give useful information from time to time. (And wrong information sometimes too.)
The only downside to Usenet is when you find the only post with the same problem as you is from 1996 and received 0 replies.
The Microsoft Mac client for SourceSafe completely destroyed our source database. Let's hear it for backups.
Is it just me or does SourceSafe really need some merge tools? And the ability to search within a project.... specifiy a label or date then search in all files. Grrr!!

So there I am, writing a rot13 codec and testing it word by word. It comes up with 'enterwining' for your second word, and I think.... What the hell!?? Clearly my code is broken! Then I realize it's Slashdot and you probably meant intertwining;)
Interesting point though, I never thought of it that way.
It DOES make sense. With colored money, you don't need to pull it out and rifle through. A savings of 5 seconds sure, but it adds up. I think you are still missing the point. It's not about the people complaining. It's EASIER. I think that fact is indisputable? It's easier and there are many added benefits: Benefits for the those who have impaired vision. And much more difficult to counterfeit.
You're main argument, which seems to be the consensus argument among/. posters today, is that "I don't want no fscking 'gay'/monopoly money!!! I'm American, and our money is GREEN!"
And I suppose every corner store has one of these 'currancy counting machines'?
Yep. They're called cashiers, or clerks.
Oh! So these clerks you speak of, they are easily able to easily tell a high quality counterfeit bill from a genuine one!?? Do they have black lights behind their eyeballs? Neato!
What if you carry a lot of bills? Predicted response to this: You shouldn't be carrying around that much money idiot!! It's like engineering and software development: You don't want to develop a work-around, you want to SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
Perhaps you (and the majority of other posters) are only arguing this insane point because of your patriotic pride in greenbacks? Maybe? The simple fact is, it is EASIER to distinguish colored bills.
Of course, the super hightech feature I'm really jonesing for is a clipboard that can hold an entire memo (and maybe ditch the 4k memo limit while they're at it...) I mean, Microsoft finally made Notepad so it didn't choke on 32K files, can't Palm do the same?
From the description:
Expand the PalmPilot clipboard from 1000 to over 28000 characters. Provides the ability to paste partial clipboard if full clipboard text will exceed field size. As a bonus, ClipHack provides instant word and character count when cutting or copying large text.
I had the Sidebar open and I was trying to delete bookmarks off the Personal Toolbar folder . (The ones that come with Mozilla). I was right-clicking and selecting Delete. But they wouldn't delete.... only later I realized I was deleting full Folders from the Bookmarks menu, including the Personal Toolbar Folder and the mozilla.org folder. And I can't get them back without reinstalling. Ugly!
Some people might be better off without lights or connection to a power grid. People should think twice before trying to invade rural areas with technology.
A power grid? In Nepal? Some people should think twice before posting.
I've heard one of Dr. Irvine-Halliday's presentations, and I get the impression the reason he personally believes in the Light Up the World project is so that children in 3rd world countries can read/study in the evening at night, ie advance their education. Now maybe you'll argue that "some people" don't want to read/study, despite it being an overwhelmingly positive aspect.
Yes, we get involved all over the world. Sometimes it's annoying even to us Americans. But after December 7th, 1941, can anyone say that the United States should simply look the other way? That's what got us bombed at Pearl Harbor. We got caught with our pants down and NO, we're not going to look the other way.
So the United States wasn't looking the other way on September 11th? If anything, the pants were farther down than 12/7. US foreign policy decisions LEAD to 9/11, those decisions did NOT prevent it.
You agreed that they don't have to pay you in the EULA.

Here is a recent Wired Article about how the PowerBook 2400, designed for the Japanese market, has a near cult following.
TOKYO -- An old Apple laptop that sold poorly when it was released in Japan a few years ago has subsequently achieved cult status, with fans paying up to $25,000 to upgrade and decorate their aging machines.
Did you actually read the article? This isn't a government monopoly, this is laying the infrastructure for private companies to take advantage of.
The key? Competition. SuperNet doesn't just allow for competition, the contract requires it. In both urban and rural areas, significantly lower rates are anticipated for high-speed Internet and network access, based on the fact that the infrastructure remains open to all suppliers. SuperNet's "fiber condo" model invites investment by individual ISPs, cable companies, and other Internet and network-based businesses. In addition, a big part of the cost of providing broadband service is laying of the fiber to get it to the customers. With SuperNet contractors installing the lines, the costs of providing service logically erode.
Broadband internet is the infrastructure of this centry, like roads or railways or public water systems of previous centuries.
My experience with Palm support is considerably worse.
My IIIx bit the dust recently as well... it was a slow and painful death, as the screen became more and more uncalibrated and the Digitizer refused to work. I couldn't tap the Home silkscreen button because it thought I was entering graffiti. I talked to Palm tech support and my ONLY option was to pay $163 CDN flat fee to get a refurbished unit in it's place. Living in Canada, they wouldn't let me trade it in for any kind of credit either. I obviously wasn't going to pay $163 when you can get new ones for less than that. I probably SHOULD have gone to PocketPC but I found a used Palm Vx on eBay for $210 CDN that is now in the mail. Let's hope the digitizer works.
Interesting, I noticed someone else said that their digitizer broke as well.
I agree. I too am a former Mac lover and have been watching Apple closely ever since I left. I wonder how many of us there are out there? Keeping a close eye and ready to make a return if the time is right.
Mac OS X has made me want to go back more than anything else. That's why I've made my KDE desktop as close to Aqua as I can get. But the iPod, iMovie, and iDVD have all been calling me too. The new iMac and iPhoto are making that even stronger.
I only realized that all the periphreals I've recently bought have been Mac compatible. Certainly not a conscious decision at the time but I guess I'm subconsciously preparing my next computer to be a Mac.
Apple is doing a great job. I think they have a stronger future than ever.
Not sure if it's a bit bucket or not, but try Carly: HP Executive Team: Carly email
32 bit CPUs are here forever and 640K ought to be enough RAM for anyone.

Does popular == which OS people say they like or does popular == what they actually use to surf /.? (Like if they are at work)
What's the best version of it for Palm? I've never found one that had satisfactory controls/proper playing with, etc. Any links? Thanks!

Think of how much karma you could get if you setup a hotkey that quickly sent a response like this for every iPod story.
Here is a pic.

Anyone else getting that?
Mod parent up, that is completely hilarious.
Finally light to study by, to get an education, to get a (somewhat skilled) job, to pay for food for your family.
