Bush threatened the press that if they did a story about an exspose book on his cocaine habits. These kinds of threats affect everything. Geeks should be very watchful of these things.
Translate this: Gentoo is not JUST a from source distro (which, yes, any distro can be from source, they just make it easier by adding optimization settings) They are trying to do a lot of cool things, and their special optimizing technics are not the only thing. The from source distro is largely to remove having to keep 10 versions of the same package.
Catalyst is largely an extension of that. How many ^&*%@#$ "Live" CD's are out there? Why does everyone make such a big deal of it? Live CD's are NOT a new thing, Linus made the boot and root floppies very early on. Live CD's are not an innovation, Gentoo has finally put some fresh innovation into an old field.
No distro is the future, every distro can make it's contributions. Which is why some people say "Gentoo is the future." It has a lot to offer, which I hope other distro's can/will use.
I have an iBook, and Gentoo runs my file server. Sometime this decade I hope that I can use portage instead of Fink and Darwin ports. Now that isn't Apple switching to some sort of Gentoo fork, but it is some good things about Gentoo spreading.
I do think that they are duplicating a lot of work with the package manager. Like the UNIX forks it is hurting everyone.
We might be able to actually use them in ten years or so... I do appreciate Open Source speed (done when done) and Perl is pretty complex but maybe they should have broken the upgrades into parts?
Maybe we should all start trademarking/copywriting/patenting our online names, then whenever someone uses it we can threaten to sue for $100K and settle for $2K.
The site is german, and down. Google's cache is to old (can't find key german words mitteilung (memo)or Schuld (debt)) and the wayback machine is giving me errors. Any other cache?
While everyone wants an Ogg playing alternative, why doesn't anyone help out the Linux on iPod team who is poting Linux to the iPod? http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/ http://s ourceforge.net/projects/ipodlinux/
Or if you think it is stupid to do Linux, do NetBSD or something. It is a high quality piece of hard ware, made to deliver decent sound (no audiophile but...) and the fact is they pay of an OS, VERY small HD, and more.
I know a lot about it, it was good to read up on. It's really an introduction to cluster computing. I am networking my News Paper and graphic design classes with centralized servers (no more $%@%## Zip disk sneaker net!!!!! Versioning!!!!!)and trying to impliment clsuter computing. There is no OpenMosix for OS X's Unixness and all (should've gone with Linux...)
Maybe this new Xgrid (reading up on right now) will distribute without a recompile OR if it is a really EASY recompile like some OS X distributed packages (can't find it now, googleis clogged by xgrid)they would get adobe photoshop to run well.
With OS X.3 we are going to do some testing to see if they machine can handle with reasonable speed. If it can, and Apple presures Adobe...
Can there be a OS X OpenMosix, or is the system too old? I really want Virgina Tech to GPL some of the stuff so the Unix community around Apple will kick in with distributed computing.
Anyway, this thing is really fucking cool just too see all those G4's! Ohhhhhhhhh. And the space they fit it in! Nothing compared to the Earth Simulator!
The _very_ nice thing about Apple is that this stuff doesn't matter too much. It would be simple to convert all those AAC's into something else (be it mp3, AIFF, or even a higher AAC and back down) to get rid of the DRM. It's called a fence, you can jump it or you can respect it. Unlike most schemes that require complicated check in and out Apple had the guts and financial sense to do something that will satisfy both sides.
It will be interesting to see if the notorious Apple legal will go after this. From what I remember they didn't bust down on people that extended the iTunes music sharing beyond the LAN.
Photoshop has an near effortless monopoly on the graphics art crowd. Everyone is "born" into Photoshop. Not trained, more a skill that honed and explored over years years like a brush and canvas. This monopoly has limited the computer art industry like having only so many colors would to a painter. Things that are simple to in other programs can often not be done in Photoshop. If Gimp starts getting others to at least consider using other non-Phtoshop maybe they will start using those trial downloads of Painter and Canvas.
With consumer graphics chips having water cooling built in, and a few laptops how long until Apple puts water cooling onto the G5's? Also, does anyone how hard it is to implement such control over the fans on a G5? Is it just some jazzed up standard PC stuff or did Apple go the proprietary route? Basically, how doe the Wintel fan control relate to the Mac?
Although according to some the developers and install (www.linuxworld.com/story/32880.htm) are not the best things in the world Mplayer has done a lot of good work with the codecs (for instance VLC doesn't play a lot of my WM movies). Thankfully for Mac folks devros javol klokan-pp and team have trimmed the install to that magical DMG mount, drap, drop. Check it out at VersionTracker (_much_ easier than sourceforge website)

P.S. Sorry about not using but for some reason they were not showing up and I am late to class@@
Just like Sony with the Virtual Game Station & Bleem! Cast. Sony sued the bejesus out of Bleem and Connectix. Connectix won and the Bleem ran out of funds. M$ decided to cut straight to the chase. Lets not forget what happened to Bungi after it's acquisition by M$, the games already in production got behind, especial on the ports, and nothing big has happened since then.
When will MS and Sony figure it out that people modding there stuff is GOOD! First off MS, Sony, Nintendo, and every other console maker looses money when they sell a console. They do this to drive up the number of games sold, off of wich they make a profit. So by not allowing for mods, emulators, and the likes they are killing free revenue wich they didn't have to dish out 50 - 200 in manufaturing costs!
My problem with satillite radio is that there is no indepnedant stations. With NPR I can listen to unbiased news and interentsing debate/commentary, you would be suprised on just how tainted commercial TV and Radio is. With Sattilite how will not-for-profits gain acess without getting tainted? They won't. Clear channel is a monopoly with bad music:P if you are going to get sattilite go with Sirrus, plus they probibally will defend inernet radio against record corparations wich is always a plus.
DOWN WITH MONOPLIES!!!
Your an idiot. I'm sorry but your experiance with UI must be limited to some nasty KDE or Windows, both blow compared tot he Mac GUI. Given KDE is much nicer than the Windows but far from the Aqua goodiness of OS X. It's the bad interfaces that give GUI's bad names- GUI's can be just as fast as command line, it just takes getting people to pull there heads out of there asses. Go and read some Jef Raskin.
This may be a flame, but so was the comment posted.
When is verison moving to a 3G network? No one there knows about 3G or 2.5G or anything, not even tech assistance. And there comercials are much more annoying
How portable is it? Did they try to make sure the code is easy to move to another platform? How hard is it on the system software and how expansive are the levels?

They have 10 for Apple, and old Gnome one, and NONE for Gentoo, Buggers!

"Linux would be just as insecure, we swear!"- @stake.
