They side step the whole question. I realize that all drives leave the factory in working condition, and a lot drives fail because of mishandling. After I receive a working drive, I want to know which drive is likely to still be in a working condition 10 years from now. A drive that's more tollerant to heat, shock, fluctuating power, and just plain old time will last longer on the average, so which drive is that?

I'd seriously question the skills of any programmer that's a hunt and pecker. I'm an efficiency nut. For the most part, my entire philosophy of programming is "there must be an easier and better way". It forces me to think about a seemingly complex problem, and how I can break it down into something manageable, easy to read, debug, and hopefully fairly efficient. I'd wonder about someone who won't spent a week or so to learn how to type properly, and what shortcuts they're going to take in programming just to get something done.

I was given an HP scanner by a friend, and wanted to use it "real quick" to scan something in. All I wanted was the freaking twain driver... I could use The Gimp for everything else. The download was a 237 meg install. I mean... wtf, for a SCANNER? My officejet printer/scanner/fax was the same thing. And their hardware doesn't even seen to work too well, it printed great for the first 10 pages, then after that, most of the color ink got clogged up within a year, and all sorts of other stupid problems.

Canon on the other hand still has some large downloads, but not excessive, and they usually even give you a nice printed manual. I've never felt let down when I bought a Canon product. HP on the other hand, I've always regretted the purchase--never again. Maybe I've just had bad luck.

How soon I forget, I don't use hybernation mode, but it does make my video card freak if I do (by accidentally hitting the button my keyboard).

So it's rock solid as long as I don't use hybernate. I use cool & quiet as well.

I went with via for the easier linux compatibility. I use the onboard sound, and never have use video capture before. (tried on a few computers, using a few different TV cards, never could get it to work at a decent quality mode under linux or windows).

So I guess with this hybernation thing, I probably will go with nvidia next time. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Also one other thing, the stupid ez update bios thing doesn't even work. In fact Asus recommends not to use it with this board, and have heard so many horror stories about flash the bios go wrong that I'm afraid to try it even with the recommended dos bootdisk. But I guess the bios thing is an Asus problem, not VIA. Perhaps the hybernation thing is fixed with the newer bios rev, but I'm afraid to try it. I guess I shouldn't buy Asus again either...
