You just brought back a nostalgia moment for me...
I remember downloading Trumpet Winsock/configuring PPP/etc....
Ahh the early days of the "public" internet... things were much simpler then.... searching public FTP's for your various programs/files of interest....
FYI the LaserJet 4, 4 Plus, and 5 (all built nearly identical engines/drivetrains) are by far one of the best printers HP ever built.
Not only is it built like a tank, and idiot with nothing more than a phillips screwdriver and access to google can fix it. I've seen LJ 4's with over 500K pages that haven't even been serviced once!
Of course toners are expensive, but one cart would last a home user for years.
First thought: Never go to CompUSA for laptop repairs.
I've worked on nearly every laptop out there and it takes no more than 1 hour (average walk-in rate $65) to determine and fix whatever is wrong, save the rare "bitch" problem. 99% of the time if an external monitor works but the LCD does not you have a bad display.
At that point it is a matter of determining if it is the display (garbled or otherwise wonky), the inverter board (light is out, look at display real close with a flashlight to see if the image is there but dark), or the display bulb (same symptons as inverter, but much rarer. Always buy the inverter board first as they are pretty cheap).
Anyone who charges you more than 90 minutes labor tops (except for real wierd stability related issues that do sometimes take extended bench time to catch) is ripping you off. Note: This statement does not apply to PowerBooks. Apple has amazing design engineers but they absolutely must hate repair technicians.
If I am properly informed, UK television owners pay a yearly TV "license" for every TV they own.
It only makes sense that some people would turn to free alternatives, ala TV downloaded off the internet. This is compounded by the length of time it takes for some US programming to make it "legally" overseas, and vice versa for those of us in the US.
Oh, and I am not knocking the TV license per se. I understand the reason it exists, even if I object to it in principal.
My father in law is a Manager for SBC Ameritech. I've gotten a tour of a local switching office and was floored by the equipment inside. There was more money (in equipment) in that 1400 square foot room than the bank across the street.
Even without the "Telstra discount" Corporate licenses are much cheaper than retail. One of our clients pays about 200 a seat for Office 2k3 professional AND Windows XP.
Is why you remove those games from windows....
And block all the game sites....
For those individuals who actually understand enough to copy the exe from their home PC, so be it. That percentage is small anyway.
The SA had no right to screencap unless he was asked. The corporate world (which this gov office pretty closely compares to) doesn't allow any vigalantes. (NO jokes about dishonest CEO's please).
It's not YOUR network, you just mind it for the owners.
IT really doesn't matter to employers that I have the methods and attitudes that produce good products. All that matters is that I threw money at some college to give me one piece of paper, and then I threw money at some other business to get more pieces of paper.
Welcome to your first piece of real knowledge.
FYI - Your situation isn't going to change for MANY year. You would be best served to use that time accruing student loans while you get a degree. If you don't start now, odds are you will in about 8-10 years anyway when you figure out how much it really is holding you back.
//30 years old, 1.5 years till I get my bachelors/2.5 until I complete my masters/already have a boatload of certs
First of all, Bachelors degrees aren't worth much anyway. Employers could care less (at the Bachelor level) where your degree came from.
FYI - we aren't taught to the exams, and I spend about 10 hours a week studying.
More often than not, the "B.S." by your name is simply to get past the screeners. Employers ultimately want to know what experience you have, and they want to be sure you'll be able to do things their way.
Just because you went to a B@M school doesn't mean you are automatically "smarter" than the rest of us who did not. We all are a product of the effort that we put in, and less so by the name on the top of our diploma.
As a student 6 classes in, I can vouch this is eventually true.
Your initial "weed out the idiots" classes require you to buy some books from their "partner" bookseller. It wasn't too bad... 80-120 per class for 5 classes....
I am now officially on "eResource" which is only 50/class, and all electronic.
Good post.
This is an excellent website to discuss this topic because it will reveal people who don't have an idea how the real world works.
The internet has made this an absolute must. There are so many idiots out there using whatever means possible to coast through school. These people might not realize it, but they are the reason a bachelors degree means nothing these days.
Remember folks: you want the investment of time and money that is college to mean something when you graduate. You might not like this service, but it is there to prove you really put forth the effort.
You need to look at it from the Joe Sixpack point of view. The Tivo works out of the box, with little setup. The device succeeds because it works so well, and is so simple.
My dual tuners (with the ability to record 2 channels *and* watch an already recorded show at the same time) are reason enough to keep my box. Plus, the service only costs me 4.95 a month, and it automatically picks up schedule changes.
Dirty little secret eh?
My Hughes dual tuner recording 2 shows and playing back another would like to talk to you.
Stop spreading FUD. While overheats do happen, they are rare. I've had a series 1 I bought 3 months after initial launch, and a Hughes dual tuner, and they both have performed perfectly.
It was fun... we would rate them according to how much porn they would store....
My record was ~730 Gig's.... used 80 9 Gig SCSI drives (5 16 drive SSA enclosures). This isn't too bad considering it was almost 3.5 years ago...
It was also fun to hold $20,000 processors in you hand.... they were neat machines.... the top of the line (Blackbirds and Ravens at that time) usually went to some notable places... I remember Amazon.com and the Washington Post as my top 2....
Thanks, best mirror yet.

Thank you SurfControl.
The thing even checks the ldap to see if the message should even be allowed on the network. If the user isn't in ldap, the message disappears.

DVD Rom adds less than $20 to the price.
XP Pro is NOT needed. XP Pro only adds domain integration capabilities.
Quicken can be had for nearly free on sale
The PC comes with WordPerfect for free. Not perfect but it works.
I'll give you the Video editing suite. But then again not every Mac user needs it.

Uh, Lance is ponying up 20 mil to go orbital.
Big difference
Retail doesn't mean anything.

Forgive me for not closing my italics and forgetting to pluralize the word year. I'd hate to offend the Slashdot grammar experts.

Outdated?
Find a hospital where they aren't critical. Cel Phones interfere with lots of hospital equipment, and aren't even allowed.
Plus, certain paging frequencies can reach well past cel phones stop.
Pagers might be old tech, but they are required tech for LOTS of jobs.
FYI - They started it

Key point: "May offer you"

My Hughes dual tuner DirecTivo box laughs at NBC.

You will be one of it's early users. When they go public BUY THE HE11 OUT OF IT. Follow these directions and you could have retired at 26.
Alternate: same rule applies to mid 90's Cisco, or early 80's Microsoft.
DO me a favor... visit gotapex.com. You'll see how to get that price. ANYONE can get the laptop for that price.
