You could get a Dell 1.6G Latitude for 594 today - 1.6Ghz Intel Mobile Celeron processor, 14.1" TFT, 256MB of DDR SDRAM, 20GB UltraATA/100 HD, 24x CD-Rom, 10/100 NIC, 56k V.90 Modem, LiOh battery, and Windows XP Home (yes I know.... but you can just dump XP Home and install whatever you want).
This is just an example... Dell runs a laptop similiar to this in spec every week for 650-700.
I built PC's for a company for about 6 months.... I left just as the Pentium launched... (I remember because the first P60 we got had about a 2 inch heatsink glued on straight from the factory)
I am surprised they didn't include the AMD 386-DX40 in the benchmarks. I built a ton of those things..... I remember them being so popular because they were so much cheaper than the Intel.
1) China would never do anything to us. Without the dollars made from exports to the USA they would pretty much have no money.
2) China isn't a country that will wake up tomorrow and be a democracy. The process is going on right now (albiet, slowly).... unfortunately, human rights will be the last issue to be handled.... but rest assured China's future is built on Capatilism. I have to think that they are just waiting for the last of the old school Maoists to die off (no insult meant, just a fact)
I guess it depends on how much time we had. Anything more than a couple years I would bet humanity would have a fair chance of coming up with some sort of plan.
You need only look at the Manhattan Project and the Gemini/Apollo programs to see how far we can progress in a short amount of time.
That being said.... probably about 98% of humanity would go absolutely nuts. I'd probably have to go to Northern Canada and get the fark away from the craziness that would certainly ensue...
As soon as you hit project manager you lose your eligibility for overtime. Oddly enough project managers work more overtime than anyone else.
I like my worker bee status.... salaried but get paid for time over 40.... I suppose I will eventually be assimilated as well.... but that's tha nature of us tech workers right? Once you hit a certain age you better be ready to enter management of some sort.... you don't see a lot of coders after 40...
If we waited for all security holes to be discovered and patched nothing would ever get released.
The question is how long should a particular developer be forced to "test" their software before release. The end answer of course is there is no definite amount of time.
It developers could catch all the holes before RTM they would, the reality is that until sw hits the public there just is no way to catch everything.
My company maintains the hardware (over 30000 devices) for one of the worlds top 3 hospitals.
I can tell you there is no way in he11 that any flatscreen will outlive many of the 7+ year old 15/17 inch CTX's (yes, crappy CTX's) I see on the floor everyday. (These monitors have been turned on LITERALLY THEIR ENTIRE LIFE) The place is starting to rollout fold-down stations with flatpanels/winterms and the flatpanels (under 24 hour hospital use) are crapping out far quicker than the CRT's. (usually inverter boards, they power the lamp that lights the lcd)
Before you say "buy better brand and/or "industrial model" LCD's" please understand these are for the most part Viewsonic high end flatpanels. All brands are showing a higher failure rate than CRT's though.
All I see for now is a space advantage. I know they comsume less power but many companies could care less.
Remember, cheap and effective usually wins out over everything else.
FIrst of all... CleanFlicks is right on this one. They bought the tape they should be able to do what they want as long as the consumer knows/agrees (which they do since they are buying from them for a reason)
Steven Spielberg did *this exact* thing with ET. YES I KNOW HE OWNS THE FILM *BUT* he did this saying that guns weren't integral to the story. He himself just admitted than you can remove something and not harm the story.
FYI, I think what he did to ET was stupid, kids are going to be scared of the government simply because are coming to take ET, not because they have guns. I don't really know what Spielberg thinks he was achieving...
We just finished replacing GroupWise 5.5 with Exchange 2000 at work (Fortune 1000 global company) 3 weeks ago. We run Norton AV Corporate (push down new defs the minute they come out).
We are running Win2k 75%, Win95 25%. All Win2k machines are SP2 and Feb 2002 security update.
We haven't seen *1* instance of this lovely virus as the desktop. Actually, we haven't seen an email virus strike yet (crossing fingers).
Hire good people, you get good results.

Besides the occasional computer part.... Online is the way to go for books.
bestbookbuys.com searches most online retailers and half.com and gives you the best possible price on a book.
The local booksellers don't often more than a few tech books on sale and sell them at FULL RETAIL.
All my books come from online and usually at a mininum of 30% off list
I admit I don't buy as much as I used to online BUT there are still deals to be had if you undestand how/where to look.

Those of you who try to make Sony seem like the bad guy here.
Do you have any idea what (money, time, effort, blood, sweat, tears) it takes to bring a game to market? Do you have any idea how much R&D when into designing just the console itself?
I am not saying I have never pirated a piece of software BUT I am saying companies have every right to take steps to ensure I can't.
A video game console is sold to you as a device which is meant to play games (or movies) from within your "region" and in your country. There is never any promise made outside those 2 things.
Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft has no farking obligation outside of making sure it does anything BUT those 2 things.
Don't give me that:
"but I want to backup MY games" OR
"I want to run linux on it" OR
"I want to play xxx game from Japan" OR
"It mine and they have no right...."
I am sorry folks. If you want the PRIVILEGE of playing video games you cannot complain about what Sony is doing here. Sony has every right to protect their (and their developers) interests.
What do you propose they do? Ignore the problem because 1% of PS2 owners were only going to use modchips for playing imports? (And I am being geneours as the number is likely much less than 1%)
The absolute truth is that for every 1 person that wants a modchip for reasons that don't hurt Sony (like playing original import games) there are 249 that use it just to copy games that they feel are "owed" to them.
But seriously, some of you around here have a seriously farked up way of thinking. To have the BALLS to **complain** when someone tries to protect their property.

I myself have 3 years of a CIS degree behind me. Late 95 I kind of burned out on it.
To this day I am still glad I walked away from it. I enjoy my sysadmin and support work a lot. I only wish I would have started learning *nix earlier. (and network equipment for that matter)
Am I learning less than I could have? Yes
BUT do I enjoy my job? YES!
I am of that odd age (27) where if I were born 5-7 years earlier or later I would be better off.
If I was born earlier I would likely have a lot more *nix experience.
If I was born later I would have had the chance to study *nix and Cisco in high school.
I was part of a generation that for the most part was raised on dos and windows. Not a bad thing mind you (it does pay the mortgage, car payment, etc) but there are things I wish I would have learned about earlier....
Jason
I am sorry but any person who can only support 30 Windows users as their job is an idoit.
I support 200, and I do it well.
90% of Microsofts flaws are sysadmins who are idiots. I have standard sw images that I developed that only go down when I see fit. And when they go down it is SMS doing it during the middle of the night to apply patches when I feel the need.
I am not a Linux basher, as a matter of fact it is on the top of my study list right now (sharing time with CCNP).
When Windows is administered well, it works well. But like I said, toooo many idiots. Take your time, develop an image, lock it down, use good corp antivirus software and uptime is easy to accomplish.
Software is only as smart as the dumbest user commanding it.

I always liked Canada, but I truly salute you for your statement. It was truly the first thing that made me laugh and smile today. I needed a smile, even if is only temporary.
Sorry pal... you need to thank the Xerox Parc Lab for things like the mouse, the gui, etc etc etc.
Read the book: Fumbling the Future . Xerox invented quite a few stolen ideas.

I thought the first 2 items on that list went together?
Seriously though... reading court decrees is about as exciting as a prostate exam. We need a legalese -> english converter asap.
Percieved longer lifespan?
Believe me the only advantage is space.

1 model of GW machines gets Corel over MS Office. These are the low end machines. Hell I don't blame them, it keeps costs down.
This is like Dell offering Linux on on their high end workstations...
