As someone who works in science, I can say that the review process can take a very long time. The experiments themselves often time take many long months and sometimes a few years to come to any useful results, so in reviewing it, you almost have to do the whole damn thing again. The fact that they found it, says alot for their process.
I'd also say that it was probably just one scientist. Say he's expected to do some work and collect some data, gets bored, screws it up, and then fabricates it. Lucky he now looks like he did it right and is ok. Plus, if you work a place like Lawrence, it's expected of you to be a top notch scientist. Which is quite likely why no one thought to check his results.
hey thanks alot. I appreciate the moderation. Ya know, once again some moderators don't know a funny comment when they read one, nor do they know their ass from a hole in the ground.
Man, you'd think M$ would get tired of this crap after a while! Or at least their customers would...
But hey, it's ok, I'll just be able to make millions of dollars in the blackmarket computer hardware trade, until the feds come down, and bust up my illegal drug...err. computer lab....
I actually really like what they've been able to do with the technology hunting for planets, however, I have to take some issue with this.
How many earth like planets have they conclusively found? zero. So where the hell do they come up with a statistic such as this? I mean, come on this isn't even small number statistics or taking an educated guess, this is pure guessing. There's no info to back this up. I'm actually involved in science to some degree, but I get a bit miffed when I see headlines like this, when it's a blatant attempt to try and get some notoriety and funding.
It's the same thing we've always seen. A company states that it will give the us something we want for a reasonable price. Lo and behold, when the time actually comes to do it, they screw the customer over. The question is why? The answer is that it has become an acceptable buisness practice to operate in this way, maximizing your profits and screwing the customer, who you have conviently signed to a long term contract.
Microsoft does it, Sprint PCS does it, and now the cable companies are doing it. The buisness's sole purpose is to make money for their stockholders (profit). They do it any way they can, and well the current model hasn't shown that it won't work yet. Maybe it's time to start some serious boycotting of individual companies?
...for a handheld that has the computing power of a supercomputer, the internet connectivity of a T1 line, acts like a cell phone, will play high quality sound, and call me Al. I don't think that's too much to ask, do you?:)
yeah, it seems like a neat idea, but there's no replacement for skill, and experience. I just have trouble understanding why someone would want this? for the amount of trouble, you can spend the time and money working on your shot at a pool bar??
OK, I'm a little pissed now. I get modded off topic for making a point about the blatant sterotyping in a post? so I guess if I started bashing all different kinds of groups in any posts I make, I'll get modded +5 interesting eh?
Ya know, it really disturbs me that this kind of blatant stereotyping is going in a "enlightened group discussion" on/.. I myself shop at Wal-mart and have been on occasion referred to as a redneck. Yes, I'm from the south, yes, I consider myself a "good ole boy". But ya know what, I work on computers all day long, use only Linux/Unix systems and I'm damn good at it. why don't we just start insulting other groups of people in our posts, like say yankees, foreigners, black, hispanics.... no? Then lets try and avoid insulting a group of people who you think you're better than.
you want to change their habbits? Make them personally responsible for backing up their data. If it get's lost, they get the blame. Workers tend to not do ANYTHING until it becomes a vital part of keeping their job. I'll make you a bet you have already converted the people who lost 6 years worth of data!
Something else that might work is instituting group fines on the groups that do not backup regularly. A company I worked for did something like this for leaving sensitive material out overnight on our desks. I did it once by accident. After my boss found the fine to tehe group, he came down on me and I NEVER did it again.
it's amazing what happens when your computer goes wacky when you're trying to post....
In any case, I'll bet this will start people thinking outside of the box and not too far in teh future you're going to start seeing a bunch of small locally owned providers popping up to counteract and undercut these larger corporations.
I get cutoff from bandwdith problems already, now I've gotta compete seals and geese?
What's next, the seals and geese working tech support?
ring, ring, ring... uh yes hi, I have a problem with my cellphone bill...
quack?
No, I don't wanna hold!!!
*music plays*
Those damn geese always putting me on hold!!!
So I will be reading the Old Testament, the Talmud, and the Quran, in an attempt to identify with the various combatants and determine for myself who is right.
My friend I believe you have missed the point. If you read the religious texts, they all make the claim they are the only ones who are right and everyone else is wrong.
After doing this myself, I came to the conlcusion that none of them are right, but all simply have seen part of the greater scheme of things, like a single side of a die (dice singular) of infinite sides.
I must admit, I love this quote:
The technology,... was conceived by two scientists at IBM's Zurich research labs, who discussed the idea over beer after the company's weekly soccer games
Hey, here's to drinking and computer development!!
Hey, if they'll let 'em do it, I say go for it. That's the problem w/ so many movies today, They think CGI is a perfect alternative to real filming and stunts. Shua, CGI is pretty cool, but at least by avoidiing it in some scenes we won't have the Matrix turn out to be like EP I & II...
btw, who else here is waiting for the matrix sequels w/ more expectations that they were Lucas' latest offering?:)

P.S. - this one is a troll!
Must be a sign of the coming apocalypse and end of the world!

nope, just a paul simon fan...
Nope, it's cuz they have converted to Nazi-ism. Take for instance M$, RIAA, SONY... ;)

Hate to tell ya, but this is slashdot, we rarely even read the articles before we post on them! ;)

Not much work there, they are inept and disorganized. :)
Nothing is better than sneaking up behind your friends and shooting them w/ non lethal devices!

while you're at it read a couple more:
Tao Te Ching
Bahgadvagita
Excellent books of eastern religions. Seeing the world from different perspectives allows us to see ourselves form those perspectives.
