While i see what you are saying, i was talking more aboutthe reporters comment. Saying the laws dont prohibit something only is useful in the context of if the laws can conceive of such a circumstance. Otherwise, while the statement is 'true', its just void.
from the story:
While Amish law doesn't prohibit GM crops, it does dictate that farming be done without the aid of modern machinery.
Geez ya think? I mean a bunch of insular 'backward' people without electicity following guideines made over a century ago? How could these guys conceive of DNA much less genetic enginnering?
The real question is are the rest of the mouthbreathers really to be using computers? The answer is no.
Firstly there is no wayo to make them totally idiot proof. Nature keeps evolving better idiots. There is a certain level of 'je ne sais quoi' necessary to run technology. You have to have some basic understanding of what youare doing and what the metaphors mean. to this day there are ppl in companies that use computers who can't make the logical connection between a document in the filing cabinet and a document on a computer disk. No amount of 'fixing' an OS can alleviate that. You cant fix a situation hat when ppl get a message onthe screen instead of readin it they clickthe cancel button and pretend it didnt happen. There has to be some thought going on in their head.
Let me give you guys an anecdote, i was workingon a womans computer who was using lotus notes everyday for more than 2 years. In case you dont know LN has a *very* distinctive login window. Anyway so I had to reinstall notes and i had to aveher login. She didn know which password to use, after about 5 different ones she got it. So i logged her ot of notes for the settings to take effect and i neded to have her login *30 seconds later* and she had forgotten which password to use.
This is the kind of situation you would have to design computers around, those who cannot retain information. The only hope for us support people and for those kind ofusers is tohave voice regonition and then you define broad terms to describe things like "I want to see my email" or "where is that damned sales report"
I have a nice dent im my wall if you wanna start pounding your head there now:)
Well, you are missing somthign very vital here, its called history. While i am no totally versed into the long history of copyright, our founding father were quite clear that things should eventually fall into the public domain. I don't know how the current copyright fights will go down in history but there arent many (any?) historical copyright rights that are part of common knowledge. I am trying to avoid ad hominim here, but the fact taht you seem to be ignorant of what the founders wanted for copyright (and they predate Marx) is kind of disturbing. Your statemetn also implies that you would consider anyong that would advocate works moving into the public domain to be Marxist, including the nation's founders.
The other thing to keep in mind here is that when the origial copyright structure was laid out megacorps as we know them now did not exist. Governments were mainly monarchies, and with the exception of a few guys like the East India Company (which was into trade not IP) these kind of issues didint exist in the form they do now.
I reserve the right to have not done any actualy historical research.
Well I am not a resident of Califonia, I am not subject to the laws of CA. And it can be argued that all my business is done from my home and none of it is done in CA. In fact as ebay charges sellers to use its service i have a relationship with ebay, and with the buyer. Im not actually doing any business in CA.
I know a guy who is a scientist who spends the 'summer' at the pole doing research. We have discussed this, Having a road will make it a lot cheaper and eaiser to supply/support the people down there. There is really a finite amount of time you can get things in by plane, the weather just doesn't permit it.
The thing i still don't understand is that the glaciers there move and flow. The very best they canhope to accomplish is a standoff agsint the shifting landscape. But rember its very cold and quite *dry* down there. maintaing the roasd is gonna be intresting. as long as they dont put salt down on it;)
I thought in ourder to get a patent somethign ahs to be *useful* and *new*. I donno which dumbass was asleep at the wheel at the USTPO, but the intentional damage of something seems neither useful nor new to me.
Perhpas the real reason for her leaving is that the business model of the riaa members of using the umbrella organization to spread lies and FUD, and aggressively harass people that arelooking for an alternatative to the current marketing schemes of the group, while allat the same time screwing the artists?
Well in a perfect world this would be true. However there are a new points not discussed here, and it starts to get complex quickly.
As it was said elsewhere in the thread, ifyou were actually sold a license to the content of a cd under fair use you hsodl be able to use this in any one person/private use you deem fit, and that some mechanism woudl be available to recover the content inthe case of damaged media, this is not the case.
If you were actually sold the content itself, you would have ownership, and then you could resell the original, or use it in any device etc (as if it were an object). This is also no the case.
The reality is that the **AA wants what is really a pay-per-view model. Where you get to 'consume' the content for a lmiited time and then never again. meaning you dont get a permanent license and you dont get ownership, and you also get no rights. This has basically failed (DiVx- PPV DVD from circuit shitty) because no one wanted to pay an out of pocket fee for a player, adn then fork out money for discs that stop workign after a period of time. Its hard for ppl to understand (and rightly so because its stupid) why if they have a solid object in their hands why it shold stop working cause someone says so.
ok stay on target luke.. Here is the bad thing abot this decision, even if the RIAA decides to go after individuals it wont satify the hunger for power and the greed. If that was goign to satiate them then they though of making isps pay a blanket fee to 'pay' for piracy of theusers cause 'everyone' is doing it. Even if they sue the 'pirates' they will still try to get your isp to pay becuse theywant to ensure big profits even if they cant sell their crap at inflated retail prices.
Now here's the intresting bit, that if the isps allow themslevs to get charged (and pass it on to you) or lose the lawsuits that will ensue, it basically means the death of common carrier, making them liable for any actions of their customers, in any jurisdiction. You think your broadband connection is expensive now.. (even though there is a glut of connectivity) just wait until you have to foot the bill for ISP piracy liability insurance.
Now go with me here, if you are being charged a de facto piracy tax to pay for stuffyou may not be doing.. you are infact paying for a service, at that point you are paying for soemthign that you are getting no service from. So you are infact paying for content you arent getting. So at that point i say.. well go get it.. you are payign for it you are now entitled.
not only is this teribly confusing but downright silly, i know its baout taxes. but why should 'human' dolls be taxed differnetly.. whats the point? Do they have to be anatomiclly correct to be "human-like"?
This begs the bigger question.. is a real doll a human doll or an action figure?:)
This is the kind thing that the double jeopardy protections are for. The govt cant continue to fish over and over trying to shop around for the venue that is favorable to them if they lose. The accused however can appeal the decision because at that point its up to them to put themselves into further legal jeopardy ( or get out of it)
well now that you know that/. might contain offensive content, you can add it to your blokcing software on your computer.. you are using blokcing software arent you? Its clear you arent hovering around watching every second or you wouldnt really be worried about this.
well i was thinking about this with the article there, magnetic fields can be shaped by other magnetic fields and electrical fields. I have no idea if thats how they are doing it.. but you can actually get a great deal of control with these systems.. look at your TV.. that electron beam is control by a combination of electric (E) and magnetic (B) fields, working at right angles. IAMANE (i am not a naval enginneer) however 2 things occur to me, 1) the ships isnt filled wall to wall with cargo, cant be or it woudlbe a floating box (which dont sail thru water very well) and also 2) the 'control points' where one would normally hook/rope/chain a ship tothe dock (i think) would be likley to be reinforces to handle the stress cause by the motion of the ship vs the fixed point of the harbor. I dont see a technial reason why this all cant work. logistics.. well that remains tobe seen.
Assuming that there was an extended failure ther really woudl be bigger issues thanthe dockingsystem, like the cranes and the computer systems and etc etc etc
Ok perhaps we need to clear up a few things. Firstly a few misconceptions. The internet is not a democracy, its an oligarchy (government by the few). What does this imply? It implies that the virtual space on the internet that you use that is not a) your own or b) contracted to you to manage, you have no rights to. You are there as a privlidge. (IRC is a great example of this) It is not 'public' space. it is *shared* space.
Being that this is a shared space and random person is neither point A nor point B, there is a level of conduct expected by the ppl that are A and B, and you can be bounced if they deem fit. Please recall that you as A or if so given power as B have the right to control your network, everything coming in and going out.
If you wanan run your own space with your own rules go ahead.. but i'll clue you in here, you wanna let ppl run amok and piss of everyone, you aren't going to get anyone there over then people pissing on each other.
I am likely to get clobber for flame bait (and off topic but the original one was already in that area), but here it goes anyway...
I have been watching this, i'll use the term "movement" for tha lack of anything better at moment, regarding the vitirol spewed at anything non-gpl. Quite frankly its starting to go beyond just the code being 'open' per se, its becoming an (arrogant?) mindset. Quite frankly its giving me vibes of what i'll call the 'PETA principle'. The idea that if something doesnt conform for "insert dogma here" it must be crap/evil/whatever. To be brutally frank, a piece of 'GPL" software could have also done the same backhanded hidden signup for spam thing too. But hey you get to look at the source code and see that before you install it right!? You did go an read all the code first right? See this is the point, he glp donest prevent anyoem from doing scummy thing.. just taht they have a better chance of getting caught for it. But as *nix apps and tools move forward into the use by the general public (even if they are the 'holy' GPL) not only will most ppl not bother with looking at the code. most ppl wont have the ability to know taht the code exists to be read.. its not part of their vocabulary.
Perhaps we should stick to making comments relavent to actual *actions* of the software devlopers and the quality of the work instead of holding up your golden calf and demand it be worshipped. </rant>
It'll make mountains of julienne french fries!
im sure they will work that out when theymake one big enough to suck in a while.
Now we know what happened to the SS minnow
This is evolution in action boys and girls.
When people post the same story over and over it means its a better "whole product" then an new original story.

With Steve as president we might be some insanely great leadership, as opposed to the normal insane leadership we have now.
I *heart* Ryoko ;)
