So did mine. And that was a sure fire way of getting me to obtain and read those books,-)
Your point is valid, tho. I get to decide what my child reads or not but I have no business doing to same with your kid. The problem is, how do I know if my kid gets a book I don't approve of at the school library? Maybe he reads it there and doesn't bring it home so I'll never find out.
A desicion has to be made by the school custodian (or PTA or whatever) as to what books to have available at the library. It is unrealistic to think that the librarian will have a list of allowed books per student.
If I'm interested in making sure my opinion counts in deciding what books will or will not be available to my kids at school, I'll make sure my voice is heard at the committee that does the deciding.
That said, I believe children should be able to read what they please and form their own oppinions instead of being "censored" into thinking like we do. If my kid wants to read "Mein Kampf", I won't forbid it to him. I will, however, make sure he has access to counterpoint arguments and will sit down to discuss it with him.
Excellent. Now I won't have to put up with people saying "I use filters for that" every time I take some meat to a BBQ
Laugh all you want, but spam at a BBQ might have some use.
There was this time, when a few friends and I tried to do a BBQ at the beach and NO ONE was able to light that damn charcoal. We could have used to spam that day. We ended up eating bread and ketchup and some tuna fish we bought.
I've been running ReiserFS on a number of machines for several years, never had the slightest problem with it.
I'll say. In fact, my Suse install recommended Reiserfs, so I chose it. Haven't had any problem so far, and I've been merciless with that install (I was asked to evaluate a possible replacement for Windows for our company, so I'm trying to figure ways our users could break things up).
Except that you don't make to 78 by having suicidal tendencies. At that age a radical cause is getting the lime jello off the menu.
I know you mean to be funny (and were rightly modded so), but you don't need suicidal tendencies: all you need is not having anything to lose.
I've been reading too much mysteries novels, but suppose an old man with little time to live and suffering some form of disease that requires him to carry bulky medical equipment was offered the chance to earn money for his next of kin, or some such? Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? Nope.
I haven't flown much lately, but the last few times I was "randomly chosen" for extra screening in 4 out of 4 flights I took (inc. connections) going to and from LA. But everytime the screeners were courteus enough to defuse my irritation. Then again, I've learned years ago not to take everything personal.
Let me re-state what I've said before: If you do not agree with what RIAA is doing, stop supporting it. Sadly, this means stop supporting artists affiliated to it. Quit cold turkey. Do not buy their CDs. Do not attend their concerts. Do not request their songs on the radio. And do not download/share their songs on the Internet.
Go on and protest their actions. The louder, the better. But stop supporting them, or your cries will fall on deaf ears.
Wouldn't the world be great if we could have political leaders that were more like Linus. The problem is people like Linus don't win elections because they're not manipulative liars like all the rest of politics.
There are lots of political leader that are, in fact, dictators. Heck, some of them might even be benevolent.
Ah, but would IE7 be a better alternative for everybody, I wonder?
Not likely. Specially if MS refuses to release IE for other platforms.
What's the betting that IE7 is curiously reticent about blocking ads on certain sites?
An ad-blocker whitelist? I hadn't thought of that. This could be an aggregate service for those who publish via MS. Paying to ensure your ads aren't blocked and maybe paying to ensure your spam passes thru the filters.
They are netiher stupid (they can't be and remain in their position in the market) nor evil (no, they are not really out to get you). They are a corporation, doing what corporations do: protect their bottom line.
If IE 7 comes out (and according to TFA it's just speculation) it will be because MS feels threatened by the alternatives, as a poster before me indicated.
I switched from IE to Firefox and I'm quite happy with it. But if IE7 offers a better alternative, I might switch to it.
Of course, the last company I was with made no sales for 2 quarters. their solution? fire the half the develepors, and treat the sales staff to two weeks in Jamaica.
Man, you have to look at it from a PHB perspective: the developers had 2 quarters to finish the product, so they are no longer needed. Let's keep only a handful for housekeeping/last minute stuff.
The sales staff, on the other hand, need to be motivated to sell the product the developers took 2 quarters to finish.
See it all makes sense. Plus only by smoking Jamaica's finest you can come up with some of the ad campaigns I've seen around.
One way to find out... post your address and we'll send you our favorite attachements. I have a video of Osama committing suicide that you might find interesting...;-)
You can get honey from sugar cane. Tastes better, IMHO.

Are You Annoying?

I wish I had mod points to mod your post up.
I worked tech support for a while, and most of the time, an irate customer can be defused with good manners.
Yes, it is annoying, but if both parties get defensive, the solution will be harder to come by. Like those drivers that don't dim their light as so they won't blind the incoming traffic. If you blind him too, there's an even greater chance of collision.
They don't give out root access to anyone as a policy, I guess, but every policy can have an exception.
Make your case as to why you need root access and not having it is hindering your productivity. Then take it to your boss who should then take it to the IT boss or however it's supposed to go.
Make sure to mention how knowledgeable of the system you are and stress out the hindering part.
And if they give you that root access, tread carefully not to screw anything up. Even an accident that has nothing to do with you might make them use you as an excuse ("See! We gave him root access and now a tidal wave knocked off our communications!")
I've been running 2000 Pro since it was available, and I've put off installing XP even though I have a boxed copy of it simply because I don't see any possible benefit of switching from what's a fantastic stable yet flexible desktop OS.
Games. That was the reason I upgraded from 2000 to XP. Games that were only for Win98 and balked when running in 2000 ran trouble free in XP.
Other than that, 2000 is great. I used it at the office until they gave me a new notebook with XP preinstalled.
The sleeping lion which usually let's the government pursue it's own agenda at will, will begin to fight.
You owe me a monitor and a keyboard!
The sleeping lion will only wake up if roused by some powerful entity whose interest will be benefitted by doing so. It will certainly not wake up by itself.
Google has a philosophy of doing no evil, which makes sense given that they depend on Free software
Uh? How long before google-fanboyism gets dampened by the "new" owners?
Google is a for-profit organization. The Bottom Line is their raison d'etre.
(You know I'm right because I used a foreign language phrase...)

how would hosts.deny help? Do I drop someone in if they fail their first password guess?
Nope, you deny ALL for sshd service and then in hosts.allow, add the IPs from where you intend to admin.
If you provide ssh service to third parties, however, this is not the solution.

So, you get to spend money and she doesn't put out? I once had a girlfriend like that.
I'd rather spend the money on videogames and hookers. The end result might be the same, except that you do "get some".
In related news, whenever I feel the need to get in touch with nature, I just fire up my GBA and play a couple of hours of Harvest Moon.
or just use a ThinkPad like I do--no Windows key to look at
Man, that used to slow me down. Having gotten used to windows-e, windows-f, etc, suddenly a keyboard with no window key really threw me off balance.
Luckily, IBM provides an utility that allowed me to map the right control key into a windows key.
I've been running ReiserFS on a number of machines for several years, never had the slightest problem with it.

Is anybody here playing Anarchy Online? Care to comment on the game?
I remember triyng the game sometime in the past taking advantage of a 7 day trial offer and hating it. It was so buggy that it was impossible to play.
I suppose it has gotten better, but has gameplay improved? How does it stack againts other online rpg?

Why is it in the core OS to run slower!
This is called the 486sx method. Later on, they'll sell you an upgrade with the throttling disabled (Windows XP TURBO!!!).
(yes, mods, it is a joke).
I have dial up. On a two hour cut off basis. I'm thinking my system may stay unpatched !
You can always order the CD from MS. I believe they are giving them away.

and you can select any OS you want, as long as it's Microsoft Windows XP, right?
Odd, I recently bought several Dell servers that came with Redhat pre-installed.
But for desktops, I'm afraid the choices are XP Pro or XP Home. AT least according to their web site.
Of course, the last company I was with made no sales for 2 quarters. their solution? fire the half the develepors, and treat the sales staff to two weeks in Jamaica.

While not yet extinct, it's almost there. Almost makes me feel bad for putting all that wooden furniture my grampa/grandma left me in a storage.
