  1. Re:how's it ? on Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence in Theaters · · Score: 1

After looking through rotten tomatoes it seems to follow along the same theme as the first movie, (played in a timeframe after it. I had originally thought it was placed after Stand Alone Complex and before the first movie). The reviews generally seem to lean in one of 2 ways. Either they though the movie was beautiful, deep, and technical, or they though the movie was beautiful, too deep (or just trying to be too deep), and too technical. Anyway, I can handle beautiful and technical, and I will judge for myself whether it is a faux depth.

  2. Soundtrack on Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence in Theaters · · Score: 5, Interesting

Also, the soundtrack to Ghost in the Shell: Innocence is wonderful. I have the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex O.S.T. 1 CD and it was so good I decided to see about the other ones. Innocence is also excellent. The original is quieter, slower. SAC OST 2 is good also but SAC OST 1 and Innocence really stand out. I recommend them to anyone who liked the atmosphere created by the music of the original movie.

  3. Re:how's it ? on Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence in Theaters · · Score: 3, Insightful

I don't know about this movie as I obviously haven't seen it but the first one could easily be characterized as just another robot type story. It would be a signifigant injustice as the first movie did a very good job at addressing, (though not conclusively answering), questions about where the line between man and machine blurs.

On the subject of accessing other's resources, I don't know about your environment, but in my defense network environment, the laptops are theirs, not yours. And you only connected it to their network. The laptops have dial in vnc. You don't get to put it on your home DSL or the hotel where your staying. It makes sense though it's painful.

Thats impressive for just 1 million, working in defense and knowing our contactors. 1 million dollars is bearly enough to get them to tell you how much it would cost for them to do the initial research to tell you if they can actually build what you want.

(I did not read the article as it is slashdotted so I am relying on the summary's statement of 1 million dollars.)

  14. Not quite research on Internet Chess Club Security Defeated · · Score: 1

Honestly this paper sounds a bit childish. It seems as if the write is either very proud of himself or very unhappy with ICC. It seems that reasonable efforts were made for security though not wonderful. The server should compare calculated network lag to tracrt network lag, and should remove the symbols, but there is only so much you can do to keep someone from reverse engineering a small binary. The 64 bit seed seems to need an asymetrical encryption, but really what else is needed? And is there a HUGE worry that there will be a man-in-the-middle attack against your chess game? These are paying customers of a chess server, not bnet and CS script kiddies. The critisism of ICC is way too harsh. (And undeserving of a slashdot front page article I might add.)

No offense, but has anyone considered that being able to obtain detailed government satallite imagery might not be the best thing in the world? It didn't matter when our only enemies had the same damn images from their own birds, but now are enemies don't run spy satalite networks so maybe we shouldn't be just giving it away.

It's good to see more research into this to validate what every gamer knows. Every one has felt that FPS, (mine being AA:Ops), or other game where you just get some games where your on. (You movement in the game is extemely quick and accurate, your descision making the same, but you feel calm and relaxed). The more research that goes into this the better we will get at making games that serve a purpose, (and less at making games for things like supporting politics or teaching how to use food stamps). Hopefully as we learn the science behind the phychological effects of games we will learn where they can be applied to better ourselves.

Attacks come in three stages: Reconnaissance, attack, exploitation. The idea is to have security in each section. The huge advantage of port knocking is that it offers security in the first stage. It prevents reconnaissance. You can password protect what services you are providing without revealing any information at all about them. It is not security through obscurity. It guards against a very specific portion of the attack.
