My parents were killed by a drunk driver when I was 18 and a device like this would have saved their lives so from that perspective, it is easy to be for this law.
However, I think this this idea is punishing everybody for the sins of the few and is a bad idea. A better idea would tougher drunk driving laws, including making vehicular homicide, for those with an illegal blood alcohol level while driving, a first degree murder felony.
My aunt was a text book editor and the reasons for frequent editions is pure greed. The mark up on text books is sky high and publishers make money hand over fist one them. New editions keep the cash flowing in.
As the risk of being flamebait here, Bash is not the default shell on *BSDs (Is this the reason its dying?), its tsch. Neither is it the deault shell on QNX (ksh is). Perhaps the statement that bash is the default shell on most system seems overly broad.
Developed on Mac OS X. Cool!
Seriously though, it will be interesting to see the engineers adjust to an ever changing schedule. And I thought 3rd shift was bad!
My aunt used to be a managing editor for HBJ, which publishes a lot of textbooks. The whole thing is a scam. They make sure text books are "revised" every year, usually by changing one line (thats right) and calling it a new edition.
Publishers like HBJ make money hand over fist on textbook sales.
The author of this little essay is a known troll in the Mac community. His previous essay made sure to bash Apple for copying the original windows GUI for the Mac(!).
This guy is a known troll. He MAY have valid points but his credibility is zero.
You bitch and moan because your work is being pirated via CD burners, napster and P2P networks.
Fans screams for a legitimate way to purchase and download your music online with any crappy restrictions
Someone comes with a solution to both problems and you still bitch? C'mon! You want to sell an album, fine, make an album's worth of material and sell for less than $16.
They come on the third part CD which you download seperately or download from QNX in the second part of the install.
As for chat, there is Gaim, naim, killerIRC, X Chat, phIRC, to name a few. There is jabber client whose name eludes me. Voyager is a web browser, there is Opera and killerWeb which is a front to many engines, including opera, voyager and mozilla (each of which can be run in a seprate tab!
You can download a bootable CD from QNX.com that runs "Live", from the CD, so you kick the wheels, so to speak. You can then install it, if you wish.
The QNX floppy demo was for QNX4, while the CD is QNX 6, a vastly improved OS. The floppy can still be found but its not half the OS that QNX 6 is.
QNX is POSIX compliant and can run all Unix utilities, Besides the Photon GUI, you can run various window managers. You can run X Windows apps seemlessly rootless using XPhoton. Already Gimp, AbiWord and others have been ported. There are many native apps as well, irc clients, a mozilla and opera port. Worth a try, at least!
QNX isn't the easiest OS to use (try getting a USB printer to work and you'll find a new definition of pain and suffering) but it is rock solid and fun to geek with.
SCO can't compete with Linux. Its UnixWare OS, while a fine middle level server OS, doesn't have the the scalability, hardware support or applications that Linux has. They know it. SCO couldn't make money selling its own Linux.
So, it does what M$ could only dream of: launch a self destructive lawsuit in a last, desperate gasp of trying to save its business and destroy Linux, unleashing the greatest FUD attack witnessed yet. People are scared. M$, with its "license" pulls the strings, and watches with glee. "I told you so!" M$ will say. "You can't trust open source!"
SCO needs to be destroyed. No bought or settled with, but crushed, utterly and completely. What they have done is unethical, immoral and (hopefully) completely without legal base.
I hate M$ as much as the next guy but being the biggest software company and a monopoly makes you a juicy target for hackers. Yes, they have security problems, but also remember, they are under assault constantly from wannabes and script kiddies.
Could we have made that flag on the flier any bigger? I mean, after all those probes we sent to Mars, the Martians should be able to recognize our flag by now!
Ah! How uneducated you are, Grasshopper! Mac OS X has preemptive multitasking, protected memory and many, many third part applications, see? Wisdom comes from embracing the black turtle neck!
Yes, participation is key. I cannot code. I cannot write even a shell script, but what I do do is provide feedback to developers of open source software I use. Developers appreciate constructive feedback and suggestions for changes or improvement. I have never once encountered a developer who said, "Don't like it, code something else". I've gotten many "thank you for your feedback"s or "I'll keep that in mind for a future version". In this way, the whole development process improves.
Here is Chandler running on Mac OS X. It seems to have UI issues, or issues with my screen size since some of the icons in the upperleft are obscured by the menu bar.

Jordan Hubbard is very much involved in FreeBSD. He is not the leeader but he is a core developer with CVS write access. His involvement with Mac OS X and FreeBSD helps both in ways that are invisible (most of the time) to the end user.
I have a fever and the only perscription is more cowbell.

And the Beatles? All the hits from John, Paul, George and Ringo are available - but performed on panpipes.
If that isn't worh the price of admission alone, I don't know what is.
following the path of the piracy-ravaged recording industry
Oh pity the music industry. They're out there, in rags, begging for anyone to help them.
It would think its closer to a FreeBSD port with you port to Mac OS X. I could be wrong, however.

Let me get this straight:
You bitch and moan because your work is being pirated via CD burners, napster and P2P networks.
Fans screams for a legitimate way to purchase and download your music online with any crappy restrictions
Someone comes with a solution to both problems and you still bitch? C'mon! You want to sell an album, fine, make an album's worth of material and sell for less than $16.
Its a damned OS, its a TOOL.. its not some drug induced altered state of mind... You haven't used a Mac, have you?
That guy is dedicated. Cool, though
