    Opteron's extra registers help.
64-bit calculations are easier, they don't have to be put into multiple 32-bit parts.

So...a 32-person bus is just as good as a 64-person bus? It may be harder to design and build, but when you have to move >32 people it's nice to have that big of a bus running around.

What I'm saying is, being 64-bit DOES make you faster. Not twice as fast, but definately faster and more powerful.

And that's part of what Brooks was saying. A bridge is a bridge, it doesn't do much but sit there and you can study it really well. The same with a building, or a road, or any other engineering Construct - simple, with relatively few states to study.

A computer system, on the other hand, has near-infinite states, especially when a user is added to the equation. It's pretty much impossible to study and test them all. Read the Mythical Man Month, he talks about all this stuff. Compared to the rest of the plane, the software systems of "an advanced technical fighter aircraft" are tremendously more complex.

I understand your point - but *this* linux zealot is trying to get people to enjoy a whole new computing experience, and also trying to suggest replacements for tools you might miss. Sorry if you are offended, many of us are only trying to help.

But these are just my opinions, form your own as you wish.

    The above is ridiculous.

You gotta tell your kids about what is right and wrong. Sometimes that includes religion. Teach kids what is right. If your son or daughter decides to grow up and be a neo-nazi l33t script kiddy gay hacker windows user, or whatever and you don't agree with one of those positions, you still gotta love them. You let them make their decisions - because he or she is an adult and they make their own choices.

To add a bit more to my post-Microsoft's products make it very easy for the user to do very, very stupid things to their pc's. They also have 95% of all the computer idiots out there running their windows...which again contributes to it looking like microsoft's fault.

Not that linux doesn't let you screw stuff up royally, but you have to have a bit of an idea of what you are doing to get started, which cuts off a lot of the really silly users, and if something is wrong in Linux it's easy enough to get through the abstraction and fix the problem, if you know how. Sometimes in Windows things are just broken...and you just reinstall everything to fix it. *shrug*.

Now a lot of people are saying that this Iraq stuff is all about oil. I guess you might think that - and Bush's background in oil might make it seem plausible. And yeah, if ol' Saddam does get killed in an upcoming war, and we (USA) do have to manage Iraq for a while, we probably will get better prices on oil and gas.

But it isn't just about oil. If Bush wanted to fight wars over oil, why aren't we attacking every other terrorist-supporting, oil-producing country? Bush hasn't even mentioned it. Why would we give Iraq back to its people, instead of keeping it as a territory? Now THAT would lower oil prices - steal oil from Iraq-as-a-US territory! yay!

In reality, we're just kicking Sadam out, or at least removing his teeth. He's evil, he's fascist, he kills his own people, his own countrymen... He lives in luxury, while his own public starves. He shoots those who disagree with him. You just said something that wasn't very pro-bush, are you dead? Nope. We're not that evil.

It's not about the oil. If you think it is, you are ignoring several major facts. I don't like just sitting by while women, homosexuals, and children are abused, killed, or whatever. Where people are killed for their race. Where the ruler-for-ever seems to hate most of the rest of the world, and would destroy us all if he had the power. That's not cool stuff, dude. I don't think it's just about oil.

ps - OT - breaking into computers isn't terrorism. I don't think it's too legal, but it's not terrorism. I'm not scared, are you? Nobody's dead yet. Now if it comes out that he planned to use the .mil sites' data to kill people...well that's different.
