Concur with the parent post... most people who delay going to university or take a break from college never return. I know there are excpetions... but the fact of the matter is that people take a break and get a job, comparatively start making a comfortable living and it is very difficult to go back to the student mac-n-cheese, cereal and two roommates life-style. You don't have to (and probably shouldn't) know exactly what you want to do when you start school... thats why the first two years are mostly general studies. Use your extra time the first couple years to attend lectures and activities associated with areas you think you might want to pursue - then make an informed decision on what to major in... and if you (or your parents) can afford it, there is nothing to say you can't change your mind and major later anyway. Don't wait... but make sure to take a good summer break so you will be more inclined to take your studies seriously when you begin in the fall and are lest tempted to party.
It depends... it sounds like you want to remain a programmer, but want to know which other degree will make you a better programmer. If that is really the case, then the answer depends on which type of programmer you want to be!
If you want to be a game developer, then perhaps a short-course in graphic design or a degree in cinematography or physics.
If you want to write buisness software, perhaps a degree in buisness or finance.
Do you want to write embedded software? A degree in Computer or Electrical engineering.
Do you want to write aircraft avionics software? Then a degree in aeronautical engineering.
I work with programmers every day... and they are excellent programmers... the problem is that they have no idea *how* the software they are writing will be used by the end user. Thus they spend many development interations creating what they *think* the user wants, only to have to go back and re-write significant sections of code. Since most of the bugs are introduced at the requirements analysis level (early), you can save your company a mint by really understanding how the software will be used... and that will make you a rare comodity. Good luck!
Lots of good hypotheses being thrown around but I still think a more plausible explanation would be that Lucas just made stuff up as he went along and enjoys "damage control mode" in later films.
Come-on, think about it:
-The whole, "Darth Vader betrayed and murdered your father"/"... from a certain point of view"
-The Luke/Leia Kiss
oh, and please don't cite for me your explanations to the above... I am not listening.
I would highly recommend some all-text adventure games. I have extremely fond memories of the Zork series, Planetfall and the like. They do not require fast reflexes but are still challenging, fun and addictive. Most of the common commands can be abbreviated to a single letter ("n" for "north", "i" for "inventory", "l" for "look" etc...) and I imagine that your user-interface is tuned for text anyway. Oh, and the games can be downloaded for free from infocom's site. And of course, full solutions abound on the net should you get stuck. Enjoy!
I have only seen the same ads and read the same news releases every one has been subjected too yet I knew about the caveats of the policy... how can you say that they NEVER told anyone? Unless by "never told" you mean the listeners turned off their brain upon hearing "no late fees" and ignored the fine print. The information WAS put out there.
Interesting you point this out because one of the reasons the US intelligence agencies believed Iraq did have WMDs is because Saddam was similarly bragging that he had such weapons (at least to his insiders). Apparently, while denying to the inspectors, he was telling his inner circle that he had a weapons program - most likely to maintain order amoung his military leaders so they wouldn't buckle under a US attack thinking their boss had an ace in the hole.
The next step perhaps will be to again turn to computer editing
Hopefully with a couple lucky breaks, this won't be necessary. They may have enough information already . Perhaps they got lucky and there is meta data on the images such as a file creation date. Now it is a simple manner of getting the guest list for the hotel on that date and comparing it to lists of know sex offenders. Don't know if this is enough to get a warrant, but you are at least looking at a good list of suspects. We also don't know how many other images are there - there may be some identifying marks of the perp that may be on record and match one of the suspects.
If there isn't metadata on the images, there might be subtle details that narrow down the number of possible hotel rooms that this could have taken place in. While hotel rooms are normally very similar, there are always subtle differences, for instance, the subject of the pictures on the wall or arrangement of the furniture. Give the maids a copy of the photos and let them take them on their rounds... perhaps you can narrow the search down from hundreds of rooms to a small handfull... then again... look at the guest lists for those rooms... you get the idea.
You left out some important information here... what version of Windows was your wife having trouble with? If Windows 95/98/ME/2000... I really don't dounbt you at all... but is it really fair to compare an 11/8/6 year old version of windows to your (presumably) recent version of Linux? Forgive me for being skeptical, but I have never even HEARD of someone having trouble downloading images on XP. It goes something like this:
-Insert USB cable into camera
-(windows pops up "Would you like to download your pictures?") Yes
- Click "Next"
- Click "Next" again and you are viewing your pictures.
Social Security actuaries project the trust fund will last until 2042. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office puts that date at 2052.
I don't know how old you are but I am 33. According to your own numbers, Social Security will be out of funds sometime in my 70's. A signficiant portion of slashdotters are youger than me... for them this will likely occur in their 60's. I personally plan on living beyond my 70's and have been paying into SS for 15 years now - this is a huge problem and it is a huge problem now.
....right, because we all know that correlation equates to causality. In the same vein, the proliferation of the Machintosh is responsible for the rise in autism and velcro caused aided.
In the mid 80's I was a teenager and my younger brother was a child actor working on a TV show in LA. On the same lot, a couple sound stages down they were filming a movie called "Real Genius". I remember getting to tour that sound stage and seeing what looked like a small house built entirely within the sound stage (It seemed off-scale to me - perhaps it was 3/4 scale...). There were also two gigantic machines that to me looked like oversized washing machines that had ductwork coming out of them. Now, I can't remembr if the ductwork went to the house, or to a large reservoir,.. but I distinctly remember popcorn everwhere - so much in fact that everyone (and I mean everyone) on the lot was walking around with bags of "free" popcorn that they got from that set. I also remember someone telling me that they had been making popcorn continuously for many days. I had completely forgot all that... thanks for the memory!
Wow, a very nice, well-articulated and thought-provocing post... looks like you got hit by the moderator who disagreed with you rather than was capable objectively performing his/her duties...
I know that was a joke but Windows users do have an excellent option available in Media Portal. It is a very good open source rip-off of the Windows Media Center Edition functions.
Actually, I think this is exactly what the MPAA thinks it is addressing - giving parents that *do* care but are not technically savy a tool to to help them parent.
For the purposes of this discussion, let's first postulate that music and movie sharing is indeed illegal (I don't want this to digress into a legal vs. illegal / copyright vs. criminal debate). Now then, I am sure there are a lot of parents out there who really do care if there children are engaged in "illegal" activity but who have poor computer knowledge and don't know how to find out if their children are engaged in this activity beyond simply *asking* their children. This brings me to my next assumption: when asked by technically illiterate parents, most if not all children engaged in this activity will flat out lie. I don't think this is too much of strech. I am quite sure that at a minimum, children are hiding the downloaded files in less obvious places that their parents never would find. However, most parents (presuming again they care) *are* capable of installing and running a program such as this - and while I am sure the list of files will contain many, many false-alarms, the presence of "Spiderman2.mpg" and "XXX*younggirls***.mpg" would hopefully lead to some additional "parenting opportunities".
Don't get me wrong, I don't trust the MPAA what-so-ever, but I will always be in favor of giving parents the necessary tools such that monitorring or censoring of their children's activity is done by the parents rather than by law enforcement or corporations.
I am sure you could find *someone* you know that at least at one time has played this game. I don't have the EULA in front of me, but I wouldn't think it would be too ethicly wrong for someone to give you their copy, provided they aren't using it anymore. Then again, IANAL.
Interesting and true, yet we can not ask animals if they are emotionally attracted to or simply satisfying sexual urges with the same sex. With humans it is pretty clear that homosexuals do both - we can't ask an animal if they love the creature they are having sex with. Bottom line, I don't know if the fact that animals have same-gendered sex proves anything...

That's ok... we don't care about your hosting server either...
Here is NASAs budget. Try reading it sometime.
From the budget:
<sarcasm>But yeah, you are right... Bush threw everything at Pie-in-the sky stuff...</sarcasm>
I hear the physics engine for Duke Nukem Forever is the same one used in the Infinite Improbability Drive.
