And I just love it when people like you drive your "1200cc Harley" through residential neighborhoods. Or, decide to let it rip while driving down a very busy commercial street.
I'm sure driving one [harley] is fun, but the drivers are very inconsiderate when it comes to the people around them and the noise the things make. There are laws for mufflers on cars, bikes should be the same.
I know this is off-topic or flaimbait, but I have to comment.
Its the damn power connecter on the back of most RCA Cable modems. Those things are damn hard to get off. I have thumped my hand many o times trying to get it off.
This is part of the ritual required to change the mac address settings in RCN's cable modem service.
Actually their Dimension 8500 series are not all bad, they are pretty cheap.
I had to buy one because my sister is going to college. Before everyone flames me for not building one, I have done this before, and its not worth the time/effort supporting it in the future. I might have saved a whole $50 by building one.
I use Linux at home of course, but I don't think my sister would be able to figure it out.
What do you want Dell to do? Go up head to head against M$?
Third, they're whining
C'mon--unemployment of 5.7%? That's hardly a catastrophe--and the numbers are deeply suspect. First, not every EE is a programmer (or works in IT).
This is true, but you have to realize that a lot of educational institutions only offer actual EE deplomas for many different skill sets. I have a EE degree, and was once a member of IEEE. In my degree I learned everything from designing analog circuits to designing databases.
Point being, EE's do cover a lot of industries besides just 'Electrical Engineering'
When real estate is taken up on your screen (no matter how big your screen is) You will either:
a) have to resize the original picture, which will change the aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9)
b) miss part of the original programming, in which case how do they know they aren't cropping important material?
They could make it transparent, like a logo or something.
In ASIA (ie INDIA) they play movies, including new releases, on regular cable. However, I would say 50% of the screen is taken by the advertisements. I dont' think many of them mind, if they even have access to a tv.
Either way, I don't think americans will like/allow this.
I am new at creating databases and maintaining them. Using MySQL with online tutorials was very easy. I implemented a PHP-MYSQL web page to parse server logs, and it works great in my company.
However, the administration teams quickly found out about the PHP-MYSQL solution and instantly turned it down saying that the tools are not 'standard'. They want something on a commercial DB (Oracle, Sybase) and a 'supported' language (perl/java).
So, I have to rewrite everything using the commercial products. I agree that you cannot have many different products to support (its a headache). But, when an open source solution is implemented and turned down because its not 'commercial' is a problem often faced.
Does anyone shop online for computers in ASIA? Specifically Hong Kong? I've been to Sham Shui Po (Golden Arcade) quite a few times, and this beats the heck out of shopping online. Imagine two floors filled with every single peripheral that you want.
There prices are about 10% higher than those found on pricewatch, however no shipping or tax.
I was wondering though, does anyone shop online in Asia, or do they just go to their local retailer?
The nice thing about *NIX is that we don't need a virus scanner to find infected files. as long as you know your perl is clean (tripwire) you should be able to find files and restore from backup.
Anyone care to write a nice perl script to find these?
The new Eminem album, "The Eminem Show", was due to be released 6/4/2002. The record label changed the release date to 5/28/2002 after it learned the album was pirated weeks before the release! Eminem's comment on the whole thing was, "Whoever put my s___ on the Internet, I want to meet that motherf_____ and beat the s___ out of him."
He is not very fond of people downloading his mp3's 3 weeks before he was planning on releasing the album. After what he said, makes him a prime suspect... but do you blame him? I would be pissed too. However, I wouldn't pay 30 cents for a cdr of all his albums.
"When customers called to say their service was out, Comcast sent a technician or asked subscribers to bring in the box. The company recovered 525 boxes that it said had been modified. "
Why would they bring their boxes that they knew where illegal back to the cable company's? Are these guys idiots or what? Or did the not know it was illegal?
I've lived in all 3 (HK,Tokyo,NYC) NYC is far behing HK as far as efficiency and population density. Compare a NYC MTA map to a HK MTR map, then think of how many people are using it. The few lines in HK carry much more people than the subway in NYC.
Also, have you been to the subway stations in NYC, they are disgustingly dirty compared to HK,Tokyo.

While you can get around HK very easily for next to nothing... the MTR closes swiftly at around midnight. Making it hard to get around.
NYC AFAIK is the only subway that is 24/7, but who wants to ride it at 1am through brooklyn?
And I must say that the octopus card (while not new) is extremely useful. The most useful feature being you don't have to take it out to use it. you can swipe whatever is holding the card. It will go through a think wallet or purse.
When I got back to the states (Chicago, NYC) it shows you how far behind we are in items like these. The MTR in HK is 100 times cleaner and more sophisticated than the subways in these large cities. The HK mtr is much smaller, but just as old.
I wish the MTA in NYC would create something like the octopus card, but it is highly unlikely anytime soon.

The problem with china's population control, is that chinese want to have boys, not girls. If the mother has a girl, it is a disapointment to the whole family. The baby girl is often discarded into the trash.
I'm sorry I don't have a link to back this up, I think it is common knowledge to people that live in E Asia.
If I'm not mistaken, the PVR's can only fast forward the commercials if the program has been previously recorded.
Many people, like myself, like to watch shows as they are played for the first time. Sure, I can record it and watch again later without commercials. But unless the PVR can read into the future, how can you forward through commercials during a live/first occurrence event?
I think commercials will always be here, and people will always watch them. But if you want to re-watch the prerecorded material, then you will not need to watch the commercials again.
Just what I think anyhow, what does that matter? -mlr
Is there a practicle scenario where you would want your SQL server to be listening on the outside interface? Or does it just bind to 0.0.0.0:1433 by default?

Or more likely, you are eating something wrong.
Easier to install? Yea, maybe if you don't install X. Kudzu may pick up the driver (if supported), but that doesn't mean you Xconfig is going to work.
And, who buying a Dell is going to replace their motherboard?

1) press the eject button on the dreamcast
2) Connect to closest TV
3) Insert game of chose and a controller

I agree 100%
This is also something that college is supposed to teach you. Most CS programs have a paradigms class, and should exposue you to an array of problems.
Also, most good technology people don't need to know everything. They need to have the ability to be exposed to a new technology and teach themselves.

Here is a link for an O'Reilly article on setting up a home 802.11b network using Linux and a 802.11b network card.
I'm sure it isn't as thorough as the book, but its here fast and free.

here it is for those too lazy to find it. This is the cheapest on the internet now. AFAIK
xbox-scene is a great website for xbox hacking and mod chip information. It even has a comparison of all the xbox mod chips available.
kmart has the Xbox : $180 (item# 981320) can't beat that price. (10% off)
