Decided to do a little googling to see if I could substantiate your claims....

Rupert Murdoch inhereted several newspapers, which he then built upon to create a vast multinational print empire, before he ever got involved in television. In the 80's he purchased Metromedia's independent television stations, which came with preexisting broadcast mechanisms. This was soon after his purchase of the fox movie studio, with the idea that the stations would serve as a distribution medium for the studio's programming. Therefore, not only did he not simply start his own network from scratch, as he was already a media mogul, but he used already existing stations to do so. This was in a time before today's modern media conglomerates, where such a large scale purchase of independent stations was possible. Today there are very few small independent stations, most of which are in small markets to begin with, and his approach would no longer be valid [source].

Ted turner also inhereted a media-based business from his father, in this case a billboard business, and again started by purchasing a television station, in this case a UHF station based in Atlanta, in this case in 1970, again well before the dominance of today's media moguls.[source]

So, if by "started from scratch" you mean "inherited a media business and used its profits to purchase previously existing television stations" then yes, both Murdoch and Turner started from scratch.

So, apparantly all we need to "start our own damn networks" is a daddy already involved in a media-based business, television stations available for purchase, and a media business landscape similar to that which existed 30 years ago. Anybody here fit that description? Raise of hands? Beuller?

Starting your own damn network requires access to a venue in whick to broadcast said network. This either requires a chunk of the radio spectrum from the FCC, which already licenses huge chunks to a relatively small number of entities, or access to cable television, which again is controlled by a very small number of entities. Very few Americans get their "news" from radio these days, and it's very difficult to get radio to a national level unless you're a syndicated dick and fart comedy morning show or buried so far in the AM dial that few people ever hear you.

In their idiotic kneejerks, 99% of the posters forgot to explain why PNG would be a better choice. Just because it's PNG doesn't automatically make it suited for everything.

It's quite simple why TIFF is a better choice for adobe: they own it and are familiar with it.

Your troll tried to use the "technical" argument to throw off the point of my post. My post wasn't about technical merit, it was about typical slashdot groupthink. You don't need a technical argument, you need an argument of simple economics. Adobe owns TIFF, therefore they used it. Simple as that. I nowhere said TIFF was technically superior to PNG, nor will I now. Neither will I argue the technical merits of each. There's a much simpler reason to use TIFF.

NAME RECOGNITION. When you go to a website, and they post their "publication-quality" pictures, almost universally those pictures will be posted as TIFFs, and not PNGs. By basing your raw data standard on TIFF, you throw out a term that is familiar to publishers and photographers alike, neither of whom really care about the nitty-gritty details of how the data format works. Familiarity breeds a warm fuzzy feeling and will make adoption of this format more likely.

There's an obvious reason to advocate PNG over GIF, and that's the ridiculous issues that we all know about. However, there's very little reason to reccomend PNG over TIFF for the pure sake of "BUT ITS PNG AND PNG IS 31337 LOL LMFAO U FAG" which is pretty much the gist of the /. arguments.

I don't know who are worse, xbox fanboys or playstation fanboys. The gamecube crowd seems to mostly shut up and just enjoy their games. Maybe because the gamecube crowd is mostly children who go to school all day instead of posting to seven hundred online message boards while "looking for a job" in the aforementioned basement.

IIRC one of the biggest selling points of Medeco locks was the fact that they patent their blank designs, and don't license the design to people. That way, to obtain copies of keys for the locks is a very difficult procedure unless you go directly through Medeco. Most places that use Medeco keys are ones where a LOT of people have keys for a certain area, and the main security risk is human rather than mechanical. Limiting peoples' ability to copy and distribute keys can be a better security investment than making the lock harder to pick.
