  2. Re:struggling with solaris 10 for the last week on Take A Look At Solaris 10 · · Score: 1

network setup : it doesn't request a Hostname, and for the life of my system, I have hostname unknown. No big deal, except for a few errors that it prints. I have looked at sun's site, and the recommended way of changing this is sys-unconfig - with a few changes to dhcpagent in /etc/default. but that doesn't work. And i didn't feel like going like going through cartwheels changing the large number of files required to do this manually.

This threw me too. But, the sun docs made it clear how to fix:

    vi /etc/hostname.interfacename

Enter a hostname into that file and save, then reboot if you're lazy like me.

So, for example I have: /etc/hostname.gani0

    The file contains my hostname.

gani0 is the name of the driver for my ethernet interface device.

I am now struggling to get some automatic dev links to be created in solaris, and as with everything else that I have encountered under this OS, it is being extremely painful.

I though this at first too, then I realised it was only painful because I was used to a different way of doing things. These things were just as painful when I was first learning them under another OS.

But, between SUN's excellent documentation and a very helpful user list:

One big problem with your supposition.

We would have to assume that you know what's right and Apple does not.

If I say it's not a mistake, and you say it is, we can argue all day but neither of us will be able to prove the other is right.

However, Apple, given their *target audience*, and *design goals*, obviously feels it is correct.

If I as a designer create a product that fits my target audience and reaches my design goals, I will feel very much right.

Don't think the one button mouse is right? You're probably not in Apple's target audience, or if you are you're in the minority.

I sincerely doubt that if the overwhelming majority of Apple's Customers had asked that they switch to a two-button mouse that they would not have done so.

It's obviously not as a big of a deal as you make it, because they're still in business and still selling products.

Reasons I haven't switched to using LCD displays:

    * Price: A 19" High Quality CRT w/ 18" viewable area, is hundreds of dollars cheaper than a high quality 17" LCD (with the ultra low response time, excellent colour, etc.)

    * Sucky low resolution support: I maintain a Linux port of an adventure game system that runs at resolutions including: 320x200, 320x240, 640x400, 640x480, 800x600. Every LCD i've ever seen has one of two sucky ways of dealing with low resolutions: Stretch the image to fit, blurring the heck out of it, or displaying it at near postage stamp size.

Show me an LCD that solves both problems and I'll run to buy it in the very near future.

Force ssh access, don't allow pserver access at all.

Ensure that a daily backup occurs and that you have backups for at least a week.

No, the main point of games is that the player should have fun.

After a certain point in the game, MMORPG are dependent on how lucky your drops are or how much time you can spend sitting in-front of a keyboard doing the same thing X times. For some people, that isn't fun.

But World of Warcraft doesn't suffer from those problems. At no point have I felt like I'm in a level grind, and I've spent more time playing other games in the past than I have World of Warcraft with far more results.

Other MMORPGs may be dependent on how lucky drops are or the like, but this game is not one of those.
