...Of Sony's hype machine making promises the hardware can't keep. Remember the grossly inflated statistics when the PS2 first came out? Dreamcast games looked better at the time.
I bet what we've heard about the Cell processor so far is all hype as well.

but here in the United States, we don't find it too funny
I guess Boston became part of Canada recently, because my friends and I thought it was hilarious.
We thought the Clinton sex jokes were funny too. Well, most of them. Believe me, angry liberals don't find anythingfunny. Wouldn't be surprised if they were accused of double-reverse racism and crimes against humanity tomorrow.
Maybe these Haitian community 'leaders' should stop making a big deal over one out of context phrase in a silly video game, and start concerning themselves with, oh, I dunno, Haiti. It's one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, it lacks food and drinking water, and their government is riddled with corruption. And never mind the 300,000+ children that are virtually sold into slavery in Haiti, known as 'Restavecs'. I find it ironic that they refer to slavery here, which was abolished over a century ago, but they continue to practice it themselves. But I guess its ok for them to do it, since they do it to themselves. No, those kids aren't important at all, compared to one line in a video game.
This is not to say that Haitians are bad people. But Haiti, and Haitians living here have some problems, and these 'community leaders' need to get their priorities straight.
You count the paper and the electronic count. The paper should remain the primary means of tallying votes since it is more secure, however you should always do both, someone might be able to rig one, but you would also have to perfectly rig the other to pull it off, otherwise there would be discrepancies that would lead to an investigation. The issue that led to electronic voting machines was not the counting of the votes, it was simplifying the procedure of voting so that there would be no confusion (remember the butterfly ballots?) and to replace aging machines which were causing errors (hanging chads anyone?). The actual counting of votes was not the problem. I don't know why we're trying to 'fix' something that wasn't the problem in the first place.
The problem with that is, you have a way to prove who you voted for outside of the voting station, so it makes bribery possible. What I'd do is have two counts, an electronic count, and a paper count. You make the selection on the screen, it prints the paper ballot, which you can verify is correct, then it is deposited into the box. The two counts are made, and if there is a discrepancy, the paper ballot can be hand counted.
Go get a bunch of small bills (or gold $1 coins) and fill up those burlap sacks with the giant dollar sign printed on them. Nothing says you care like a big Bag O' Money.
My name is no more valid than anyones. I'm simply pointing out that you have a name that Bart Simpson would have Moe call out at his bar if it weren't too vulgar. It being funny is the only reason I said anything.
The story is higher brow than most of the stuff there, and probably should have made the main page. But a story may have less credibility if its submitted by Seymour Butts or I.P. Freely. Nothing against you personally. I don't personally have a problem with it. But that, combined with your bias in the comment, might make someone think twice about taking it seriously.
I used to watch G4, but towards the end I was just watching Cinematech and Electric Playground/Judgement Day once a week, and most of all, Starcade. Starcade has to be their best show, but they keep showing the same 5 episodes all the time. I know there weren't too many, but there were more than that. I stopped watching though. Why? Digital Cable is way, way, way too expensive, especially considering I still watch tv on my 1986 RCA. If Comcast didn't make me pay extra for TechTV (which has gone downhill anyway) I might think about it.
I also agree with whoever said this first. They needed Wil Wheaton way more than he needed them. He's exactly the type of Quasi-Celebrity geek that they need. How hard could it have been to fix whatever problems he had? He was/is the only person they ever had that people know from outside the channel. And Arena would be better with a bracket system. Just do what Battlebots did - setup a tournament and tape the whole thing on a weekend.
Good if you are an employer and want to make sure your employees are not abusing the company time.
Bad if you are an employee and don't want to get grief for stopping for coffee at Dunkin Donuts for 5 minutes.
Bad if you are an employee and aren't allowed to use the air conditioning unless a client is with you.
I do agree with your point, it's not the idea or the technology thats "evil" or "stupid", like anything its just a tool that can be used for good things or abused. I think concerns of abuse are legitimate until there are checks and balances in place to prevent it. If my car got stolen, I'd want it disabled and found. But I also don't want the company to monitor what I do and where I go.
I'm with you, man. I work in a Boston area supermarket right now (I'm an out of work IT guy, outsourced to India etc.) I've seen my real job get shipped overseas, positions I've applied for get filled by H1B's, now I'm going to see my "put food on the table for now" job get taken away by a machine? These stupid fucks that tell people to quit whining when jobs get sent overseas, or quit whining when jobs get replaced by machines, have never even come close to either happening to them. Maybe when they start hiring overseas MBAs, doctors, and lawyers, they'll start to understand.
there's plenty of other work to be done in running a supermarket -- stocking shelves, cutting salami, sweeping up. Weiner said the displaced cashiers will be moved to these other tasks.
We already have a machine to vacuum for us. Anyone that thinks that Zero jobs will be lost is crazy. They'll either hire just enough to get by, or cut everyones hours down (like they do now).
I'm not saying that we shouldn't use these checkout machines, but don't try and tell me that there will be no concequences, people will lose jobs. With the good (for the company) comes the bad (for the employees). If its good or bad for the consumer remains to be seen.
What you're seeing are the concentrations of the top "genius" schools, like Harvard, MIT, Yale, etc. There are simply more high end schools in Boston, New York, and California than there are in other places. Since this is an academic award, it only makes sense that this is the case. Some of these people are probably from "the other 39", but currently live near their school. You can be born a genius, but you need an equally good education to take full advantage of it.
Bic fine point black. Simple, effective, interchangable, can buy a box of them for less than one of those fancy pens you have to worry and fret over when you lend it out. Or whatever else you can steal from around the office. Easier than writing in blood, when the ink runs out, throw it away instead of you.
Chopping off the hands is very effective in 3rd world countries. I'm not making a judgement about it, I'm just trying to demonstrate the extreme that this person went to.
So to punish your son for downloading music, which really doesn't have any value anyway, you destroyed a computer worth over 1000 dollars of your son's money? What would you do if he simply shoplifted the cd's, cut off his hands? Would you have destroyed his car for speeding? I suppose you've never copied a video tape, or a cd, or a casette, or recorded something off the radio or tv. I don't get why people treat downloading music as worse than stealing the cd. It's not even close to being like physicly stealing, you're not depriving anyone of their property. You're probably just a troll anyway, no sane person would do that.
Sure it does. The main advantage of most MUDs are that they are free. Some codebases even do not allow you to charge any money or make a profit in any way (heh, no not the GPL). That does not extend to clients though. If you have a client that you like enough to pay for, great. But I don't find the free clients to be inferior at all. In the last 7-8 years of mudding, I've tried pay clients like Zmud, and just didn't like them at all. If you look hard enough, there is a free client for you out there. But I will admit, CRT is the best telnet client ever. Wish it had some mud features though, if it did, I'd certainly pay for a copy and use it. Until then, I'll stick with good old Gmud.
For the last 7 years that I've been mudding, I've used Gmud. It was originally made to be compatible with Windows 3.1 with Win32s. It has all the features I need, kept very simple and out of the way, unlike Zmud. Other than those, I've found CRT to be the best telnet client ever. However it has no MUD specific features, so you will have to decide if it meets your needs or not.
I remember when Anheuser-Busch came to my classroom in the 4th grade to talk about alcohol abuse. (I'm not kidding). You might ask yourself, what kind of school system would allow something as silly as the RIAA to talk about 'stealing music', or Budweiser to talk about alcohol abuse, or Joe Camel to talk to your kids about smoking? (Phillip Morris talked to my school too). But keep in mind, these schools are so strapped for cash that they'll probably let Ron Popiel in to hock those grills, if he agrees to bring lunch for the kids. And those 'fundraiser' magazine and candy sales are nothing more than marketing. And don't get me started on textbooks with advertising.
Adequately fund your schools or this BS will happen all the time.
How much are used gamecubes now that the price has gone down, at places like EB? They were $100 used and $150 new... Does that mean a used GC will go for $50? Probably higher, which makes it not worth it to go used.

Whats the over/under on how many minutes it will take for this to be cracked? I'll take the under.
Whats the over/under on how many years in prison that person is sentanced to? I'll take the over.
What are the odds that all computers made will require this built in (ala the v-chip)?
Go get a bunch of small bills (or gold $1 coins) and fill up those burlap sacks with the giant dollar sign printed on them. Nothing says you care like a big Bag O' Money.
And of course they'll use those PS2's for missile guidance.
You should have taken it as the compliment that it was then :P

Is named Mike Hawk? Umm... Think about that for a second. Try saying it out loud. Mike Hawk. Hmm. No, nothing fishy there.
Cheese-Whiz University?

He didn't do well after book 4 because a relative died (his mother I believe). The book he was writing when he died was to make up for that.
Chopping off the hands is very effective in 3rd world countries. I'm not making a judgement about it, I'm just trying to demonstrate the extreme that this person went to.
Maybe you should read the actual proposal. It does not mandate open source, but open data formats. Big difference.
