Something can be equivilent to slavery (it's actually more like indentured servitude - in fact, almost exactly like that) and still be better than where they are coming from - just because it's a "choice" doesn't mean that you can't complain about it. I chose to take the job I have, but I still get pissed off when people are morons.
It's really easy to point fingers. Try thinking from someone elses point of view some time.

You might want to do yourself a favor and read Cthon, if you can find it - it's a book of his from the early 70s(?), and while some elements of the "Xanthony" style are there, it's not nearly as intrusive (no puns, for example) and the book is... alot... more adult. I had read it when I was 9 or 10 (precocious, thats me :P), before I'd ever read Xanth, and was blown away when looking over my shelves years later to realize it was him.

One his authors notes (back when I actually read his stuff, so quite some time ago - maybe 8 years or more) mentioned how he was adjusting to a new computer he'd gotten - I believe it was a VAX machine, and I think he also mentioned a Dvorak keyboard. He's been using computers for a long time, certainly pre-dating Linux. This was right around the time I was getting into computers myself, and I remember being impressed when he talked about setting up user directories and such.

Just because it's an "accepted part of our culture" doesn't make it okay. Trivial, obvious example include slavery, racism, gender discrimination, and genocide. All of these were, at one time, accepted as part of our culture. Cultures change. That said, it probably will be overturned, but that doesn't mean that it's RIGHT. There was no good reason to add the under God part in the first place anyway.

I think with the right environment, people might be fine with a "department of precrime" - and also, you'll notice the constant advertising/propaganda supporting precrime.
I would have liked it if they'd touched a bit more on precrime being legit, but also think the ending, with precrime being abolished totally, is not unreasonable - the backlash from such a public display of corruption would be enormous. And the general public doesn't know the conditions the precogs are kept in - remember when Tom Cruise is breaking back in, and there's a tour guide nearby? And he's telling the kids how the precogs all have luxury quarters with a weight room, and how it's so fun to be a precog?

I think you're a little over-sensitive about "left-wing propaganda", personally, although it does have a slighty liberal cast to it. But it's a refreshing change from such moronically obvious propaganda flicks like Black Hawn Down and Behind Enemy Lines...

Because you don't judge the potential impact of a law (or, in this case, a policy) by what it's doing - you judge it by what it CAN do. To do otherwise is to put the decision on the scope of the law into the hands of law enforcement, which is where they don't belong.

How sure are you that you won't be stigamtized for what you say in private? And not just now, or tomorrow, or next week, but EVER? I regret your loss o 9/11. I was there, and also was affected. But I'd rather it happen again, 100 times, than live in a society where law enforcement feels that it has the power and the right to routinely listen in on private conversation. The violation of someones privacy should be an important act, overseen by the checks and balances of our judicial system, not something casual.

The victims of rogue G-Men? Who knows? Anyone who's going to be actively victimized by the FBI will sound exactly like all the kooks with aluminum hats. But the potential for abuse is immense. And I'm not interested in putting powers like that in the hand of law enforcemnt without oversight. Heck, I'm not comfortable with the lack of oversight we have NOW, much less with granting even broader powers.

Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's your right. Likewise, just because it's not legal doesn't mean it isn't your right. It's a philosophical issue.

BTW, the Supreme Court decided that rendered child porn, where no actual children are involved is, while not neccesarily protected, is not automatically NOT protected. In fact, the only things on your list that are currently, actually, illegal are the first 2.

Some people may not read, but man, other people just don't THINK. The whole issue is that you SHOULD be able to become a "rock star" on your own merits or at least have some room for negotiation in your contracts. Since they have all the bargaining power, you DO have to either a) accept that contract or b) face not being able to widely distribute your music, at least not over normal channels. Now, this may be fine to you, but that's because you aren't capable of seeing things from another perspective and don't care if something doesn't directly affect you.

The only things you NEED are a minimum of food, shelter, and water. Anything else is a want. Being a human is based around the ability to go in search of your wants. something that's a really important want is the ability to enjoy what you do for a living - I rather suspect that you're either a manic depressive gothboy or someone who has yet to leave home/school (or both!) because you seem to think that people shouldn't mind having boring jobs that don't satisfy them - they may be forced into that, but having the option to do something interesting and exciting with thier life. The (raw) amount of money an artist makes isn't really the issue, although the percentage of the money that they make that they actually recieve is.
