Actually, what I am paying for is exactly what's in my contract, no more, and no less. What I get for my $59.99 is (according to my LEGALLY BINDING contract) a) unlimited bandwidth(downstream). b) no upstream c)no uptime guarantee, except that I'll be credited if it's ever down for more than 24 hours.
You can talk about realities and buissness models and how I want everything and everything else, but you're missing the point: They are marketing UNLIMITED connections. They sold me and UNLIMITED connection. It says unlimited right there in the legal text. If thats a problem, they they need to revise thier buisness model, and renegotiate my contract with me. Maybe I'll sign up again, maybe I won't.
And YOU can get off your high horse and stop telling me how I don't have a right to use resources that I AM in fact legally entitled to. I don't care that it's priced at a statistical model. This is how warranties are done, too, and you know what happens if they judge wrong and (alot) more people than anticipated show up for warranty repairs or replacements? Tough luck for the company, they have to deal with it. THEY misjudged, and now THEY have to pay for it. How about insurance? Thats all statistical, too. But you don't see anyone telling all those people who want thier life insurance payouts for relatives do died in the trade center to shut up and stop whining, because life insurance is "is sold and priced as a statistically "multiplexed" service". Even though the insurance companies are in huge financial trouble because thier buissness model relies on people not all dying at once. How about banks? You know what happens when everyone tries to withdraw all at once? The bank collapses, because they can't pay. Should the people who lose money this way "stop whining"?
Gee, thats logical. More bandwidth for you. But if you actually try to USE that bandwidth, it means you'll have to pay double, just like they do. Let's try to keep the pretension to a minumum, eh?
It's a valid argument, but a) there is no TLD specified for personal sites and b) whether or not it was first intended for commercial use, it certainly HAS become the generic or "common" domain.
I must say that jumping through hoops to make the zone work may force me to quit Asherons Call, which I'm quite fond of otherwise. Worthless stupid web interface thingy.
well, I'm not the expert, but I was under the impression that they didn't have (or at least rarely used) one word that just means 'snow'. Much as a super car-buff will hardly ever call something a car, instead referring to it by it's make or model.
This was also the basic idea behing ActiveX, COM, COM+, CORBA, and whatever the acronym of the day is. Of course, it doesn't seem to be having the intended effect...
Incidently, I saw a neat mock-up of a GUI wrapper for this sort of interface - you were able to drag and drop linking symbols from the menu bar to other windows in order to create "links" between the programs. While it was really need within the limited demo I saw, I don't think it ever went anywhere:(
I just tried to duplicate this on my machine, creating files with names cut and pasted from a Japanese language website. Also shifted my local to Japan. Morpheus still only listed the files it was supposed to list.
Disabling sharing and then reconnecting to the localhost displayed a blank HTML page. I don't see any flaws here. Tried a variety of directory traversal tricks and they all failed. I suppose there could be a buffer overflow...
Assuming a moron reporter, I could see a buffer overflow being described as "like the Code Red worm", and the reporter getting it that way. But then, the worm statement is given as a quote, and one assumes that reporters don't just make up quotes. But heck, maybe this one did. I can't see anyone with even an inkling of security knowledge making ANY of the statements in the article. Maybe some script kiddies r00t kit happened to trigger the overflow?
Distributing something that the original source is no longer willing to provide should be, in my mind, perfectly valid. In fact, not permitting it is a blow against the capitalist ideal I see alot of people here saying we need to work for. If the publisher can't or doesn't want to make money off his early works, why can't I? The fact that I can make a profit off of something that they can't means, in an ideal capitalist society, that I win and they lose.
I strongly suggest you get a history book and take a look at what unregulated capitalism did in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Side note: You don't get to say "obviously, socialism didn't work", and then justify unregulating capitalism with an image of an ideal capitalist society. It's hypocritical and makes you look like a knee-jerk reactionary.
Gee, I think you should get a job as airport security! You can ALWAYS tell when people are up to something! And, apparently, so can EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the military! We must have nothing to fear.
I should point out that I agree that vandalism costs money and all that. It is and should be criminal. RL vandalism is a misdemeanor(sp?). What he did is a felony. Thats part of the injustice here. Bringing a SWAT team for the arrest? I can see it being justified, in the circumstances. Of course, perhaps some additional invesitagtion could have been done, established that the guy actually doesn't have any bombs or guns (is this true? no details) and then he could have been arrested peacefully.
And, as above, it's NOT ILLEGAL to incite violence or circulate bomb information.
I think YOU actually need to read some history, it certainly is okay to advocate violence. Kinda like the AMERICAN REVOLUTION. It's when you incense people to violence (clear and present danger, and all that) that you're crossing the line.
Well, the apple instructions consist of "double click on the Pooch installer". The rest of the page is pretty pictures, plus a brief description of the process to add new nodes. Not a single bit of explanation on how to configure the cluster, or what to do if double-clicking the installer doesn't work. I think I'll take the manual, thanks.
Read some of the posts higher up for an explanation of why this is okay. Or do this simple experiment: Clean your house. Or room. Or sock drawer. Hey presto! Less entropy.
"I could give a" is as correct as "I couldn't give a" - in the first case, you're saying, "I could give a damn, but I don't", in the second, you're saying "Even if I wanted to, I couldn't give a damn".
While you certainly have some valid philosphical points, you cheapen both your argument and those who were (and, in places, still are) by calling laborers slaves.
Also, the fact that many of us are able to make a living as "slaves", without working the land, is one of many things which has allowed our civilaztion to progress. It wasn't until we (as a race) had the infrastructure to support people who didn't actively farm/hunt/otherwise produce food that we were able to move beyond a subsistence level. And fantazise all you like about the noble savage living as one with Nature, but people living at a subsistence level will JUMP at a chance to move beyond it.
I read an article about this thing in some trade magazine. Interestingly, it was developed by the same guy who thought up the cubicle, and it was intended to replace the cube - I mean, who needs a 6x8 cube, when you you just roll in huge rows of these things, which I believe took up about half the space.
For what it's worth, Best Buy had a glitch earlier today and was selling them for 129.99, with free shipping. I got my order in, too. Yay me.

Are you sure they weren't just sharing the entire C:/ drive, as mentioned above?

Ooh. But they can abbreviate "Cactus Data" to "CD" and call it one anyway!

Car CD players are also (often) affected by this, because of the skip protection they use.

I guess a wink and nod threat from the US to bomb something in the EU would be perfectly sufficent to get ANYTHING past then. Werd.
And, as above, it's NOT ILLEGAL to incite violence or circulate bomb information.

Nitpick: You can get off the shelf consumer boards with 64bit PCI now (the new Tyan MXP).

x86 port of Darwin is currently Intel-only, as it happens. I was all set to install it on my new machine and play around, too.
