If you are planning on moving this thing by the micron then the first can't be all that innacurate because you'd never be able to nudge out any drastic error. Just keep throwing the firt at it until we're OK.

  3. Re:Not a death penalty case on UK Hacker Loses Extradition Appeal · · Score: 1

Almost all of you miss the point. The law does not require security to be in place in order for it to be criminal. The fact that you can do something has zero impact on whether you should. Something is criminal becase of the act that has occured, not because you weren't stopped from doing it. That's why you often have multiple charges brought against a criminal instead of just the final act. Leave your house unlocked and it's burglary. Lock your house house and it still happens then it is breaking and entering and burglary. Do you weight the burglary crime any differently? I think most would say no. Same thing here. He's being charged because what he did was illegal. Has nothing to do with how he did it or whether he should have been able to, just that he did.

Should you also argue a speeding ticket because the car doesn't have a limiter on it that keeps you from speeding? Or a parking ticket because all meters should now text message you an update when it's about to expire.

The argument is not that they should not have security in order to protect data they deem important. The argument is that the lack there of does not reduce the severity of the crime.

This isn't even a case where you can claim the DoD deserved it by leading the guy on by wearing a skimpy outfit. These systems were just sitting there and he went out of his way to do harm. Not much else to say past that.

This was a better deal in the good old days before law suits ruined everyones fun. For developing the shuttle toilet (ISS uses the russian toilet) there were company sanctioned keg parties after hours in the company park to help the collection along. True story. This was at the CT site, before the TX existed.

The article doesn't get into much more than the toilet, but the full cycle will be to feed that into WCS (waste collection system) which will then go into the OGA (ox gen assembly), with end result being O2 to breath and H which will probably be tossed overboard unless they decide to add the sabatier unit to it which will take CO2 and H (plus catalysts)to produce water and methane. The theory behind it is that up to 90% of the O2 needed for a trip to Mars can be gotten from personal water intake and humidity.

No it isn't. Its currently collected and then tossed out with the rest of the garbage. Startig in the Fall when the WCS comes on line it will actually be used. While it's certainly potable after processing the likely hood of that is pretty small for the ISS. For whatever reason the astros are against drinking their own piss even after processing, and they still hold political clout when it comes to policy.

The WCS will enable it to be collected and then fed into the OGA to produce O2, and H. the H being dumped overboard. This is actually a critical process for any chance of going to Mars. It's estimated that up to 90% of the O2 needed for the trip can be created from reclaimed water from various places, mainly waste. So what you eat and drink and piss today you'll be breathing tomorrow.

We're a fortune 50 aerospace company, CSC manages our data center and I can tell you it is wrought with problems. When a practically brand new data center needs to be shut down for a weekend after 5 years because the power needs are inadequate and need to upgraded something wasn't planned right.

The fact is when data centers are run by companies that make money by the CPU they could care less about the cost. Its factored into the fee. No reason to be green. And this is the vast majority of corporate data centers. Most are contracted out and energy cost doesn't really matter, it just goes back to the customer.

Well, the addiction part comes from the fact that if you really examine it, the internet ain't all that fun. It's just a waste of time that is simpler than life. For the most part the games get boring pretty quick and continue to get played because you have nothing else to do. Blogging? How the heck is that fun? Shopping? Again, not exactly Disney World fun. Porn? Something to do while you are bored, and considered an addiction of its own. I mean really, how many people use the internet and sit there and play Cash Cow on webkinz all day. It's an addiction because even though the vast majority of the experience is pretty sucky, people still line up to do it.

Of course we'll vail it as 'information' to make us all seem smart. But in the end its a bunch of people who are too lazy or intraverted to experience a real life. Honestly, what about Slashdot is fun?? So this isn't anti fun.

That's the great thing about those movies for the networks. No matter how bad, people watch. The real sin will be when they look at the numbers it brought in and decide to make it a series.
